Book excerpt: The Aircraft Regression Model (ARM) Task has explored modification of the Boeing Turbine Engine Variable Cycle Selection /Airplane Response Engine Selection(TEVCS/ARES) procedures by decoupling the representation of specific propulsion systems and the detailed mission definitions from the overall surface fit representations of the aircraft. Detailed comparisons between the RSTEP/ARM techniques developed herein and another available technique for aircraft/engine design refinement are provided as the principal result of this program. All objectives of the RSTEP/ARM effort were attained. A simplified mission performance computer program was developed and tested in the evaluation of two engine cycle concepts, one a turbojet and one a turbofan. The program was simplified by using regression models for airframe geometry, weights, and drags. The program is currently operational in both the Air Force and at two industry sites.

The Central Composite Design (CCD) data selection pattern was studied and found to be a flexible, accurate, and economical alternative to the orthogonal Latin Square design selector. The impact of the number of independent variables and the number of data points was systematically investigated. Two methodologies which provided significant improvement in the accuracy of the regression surfaces were also identified. (Author).

The goal was to derive meaningful, yet easy to use models based on an updated collection of few observations and many variables. First, specific criteria were established for selecting explanatory variables. A variety of numerical and graphical techniques were then used to critique candidate models by examining residuals and evaluating the influence of individual engines. The final models are not only intuitively satisfying, but generally provide better predictions and are easier to use than earlier models. Additionally, the user is provided with a greater understanding of the design and sensitivity of the models, and therefore a better understanding of the actual estimates.

The alternate procedures were evaluated separately and then collectively in a baseline parametric engine performance program. The alternate procedures dealt with thermodynamic properties, matrix coefficient prediction, regression of component characteristics, afterburner calculations and regression of the compression process. Analysis of the combined procedures resulted in a cost reduction of approximately 46 percent with average deviations in engine net thrust and fuel flow rate of less than 0.7 percent. (Author).

The study derives new cost estimating relationships from an expanded data base and uses new diagnostic statistics to screen the relationships and to evaluate the characteristics of the preferred set. Section two of this Note identifies the data used, explains the criteria and rationale for selecting explanatory variables, and describes recently developed regression diagnostics. Section three presents the preferred set of relationships. Comments on these results; a comparison with DAPCA equations; suggestions for the use of the cost estimating relationships and directions for possible future research are discussed in Section four. Supporting statistics for the predictive models are available in the Appendix. (Author).

Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides a review of real-time modeling methodologies for gas turbine engine performance. The application of real-time models and modeling methodologies are discussed. The modeling methodologies addressed in this AIR concentrate on the aerothermal portion of the gas turbine propulsion system. Characteristics of the models, the various algorithms used in them, and system integration issues are also reviewed. In addition, example cases of digital models in source code are provided for several methodologies. This document has been updated to include an advancement in aerothermodynamic real time model transient simulation methodology. In recent years, there has been an emphasis on using a single model for both non-real-time and real-time simulation, without any loss in accuracy and without the extra software maintenance efforts associated with having a separate real-time model. Discussion of a method to optimize the equation structure of the non-real-time aerothermal model for real-time execution is included.
