Book excerpt: This effort examines the use of regression modeling to represent turbine engine performance as a function of Mach number, altitude, power setting, design for pressure ratio and design overall pressure ratio. A model, satisfactory for conceptual analysis work, was constructed and evaluated. A significant reduction in propulsion data generation cost was demonstrated (approximately 15 to 1). Details of the approach are presented along with a discussion of the practicality of such a model. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Aircraft Regression Model (ARM) Task has explored modification of the Boeing Turbine Engine Variable Cycle Selection /Airplane Response Engine Selection(TEVCS/ARES) procedures by decoupling the representation of specific propulsion systems and the detailed mission definitions from the overall surface fit representations of the aircraft. Detailed comparisons between the RSTEP/ARM techniques developed herein and another available technique for aircraft/engine design refinement are provided as the principal result of this program. All objectives of the RSTEP/ARM effort were attained. A simplified mission performance computer program was developed and tested in the evaluation of two engine cycle concepts, one a turbojet and one a turbofan. The program was simplified by using regression models for airframe geometry, weights, and drags. The program is currently operational in both the Air Force and at two industry sites.

Book excerpt: The Regression Simulation of Turbine Engine Performance (RSTEP) Task IV program was an analytical study to identify and evaluate approaches to improve the accuracy of regression surfaces for use in TEVCS/ARES procedures. The Central Composite Design (CCD) data selection pattern was studied and found to be a flexible, accurate, and economical alternative to the orthogonal Latin Square design selector. The impact of the number of independent variables and the number of data points was systematically investigated. Two methodologies which provided significant improvement in the accuracy of the regression surfaces were also identified. (Author).

The alternate procedures were evaluated separately and then collectively in a baseline parametric engine performance program. The alternate procedures dealt with thermodynamic properties, matrix coefficient prediction, regression of component characteristics, afterburner calculations and regression of the compression process. Analysis of the combined procedures resulted in a cost reduction of approximately 46 percent with average deviations in engine net thrust and fuel flow rate of less than 0.7 percent. (Author).

Book excerpt: The NASA Engine Performance Program (NEPP) can configure and analyze almost any type of gas turbine engine that can be generated through the interconnection of a set of standard physical components. In addition, the code can optimize engine performance by changing adjustable variables under a set of constraints. However, for engine cycle problems at certain operating points, the NEPP code can encounter difficulties: nonconvergence in the currently implemented Powell's optimization algorithm and deficiencies in the Newton-Raphson solver during engine balancing. A project was undertaken to correct these deficiencies. Nonconvergence was avoided through a cascade optimization strategy, and deficiencies associated with engine balancing were eliminated through neural network and linear regression methods. An approximation-interspersed cascade strategy was used to optimize the engine's operation over its flight envelope. Replacement of Powell's algorithm by the cascade strategy improved the optimization segment of the NEPP code. The performance of the linear regression and neural network methods as alternative engine analyzers was found to be satisfactory. This report considers two examples-a supersonic mixed-flow turbofan engine and a subsonic waverotor-topped engine-to illustrate the results, and it discusses insights gained from the improved version of the NEPP code. Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) provides a review of real-time modeling methodologies for gas turbine engine performance. The application of real-time models and modeling methodologies are discussed. The modeling methodologies addressed in this AIR concentrate on the aerothermal portion of the gas turbine propulsion system. Characteristics of the models, the various algorithms used in them, and system integration issues are also reviewed. In addition, example cases of digital models in source code are provided for several methodologies. This document has been updated to include an advancement in aerothermodynamic real time model transient simulation methodology. In recent years, there has been an emphasis on using a single model for both non-real-time and real-time simulation, without any loss in accuracy and without the extra software maintenance efforts associated with having a separate real-time model. Discussion of a method to optimize the equation structure of the non-real-time aerothermal model for real-time execution is included.

Book excerpt: This book presents new studies in the area of turbomachine mathematical modeling with a focus on models applied to developing engine control and diagnostic systems. The book contains one introductory and four main chapters. The introductory chapter describes the area of modeling of gas and wind turbines and shows the demand for further improvement of the models. The first three main chapters offer particular improvements in gas turbine modeling. First, a novel methodology for the modeling of engine starting is presented. Second, a thorough theoretical comparative analysis is performed for the models of engine internal gas capacities, and practical recommendations are given on model applications, in particular for engine control purposes. Third, multiple algorithms for calculating important unmeasured parameters for engine diagnostics are proposed and compared. It is proven that the best algorithms allow accurate prognosis of engine remaining lifetime. The field of wind turbine modeling is presented in the last main chapter. It introduces a general-purpose model that describes both aerodynamic and electric parts of a wind power plant. Such a detailed physics-based model will help with the development of more accurate control and diagnostic systems. In this way, this book includes four new studies in the area of gas and wind turbine modeling. These studies will be interesting and useful for specialists in turbine engine control and diagnostics.

Book excerpt: This book is for students, teachers, and practicing engineers and describes an industrial approach to gas turbine engine simulation, mainly for aircraft propulsion. The principles of performance model creation are covered, and the viability and accuracy of model-based performance analyses are demonstrated by their application to real-world examples, where measured data are scarce. Clear distinctions are made between design and off-design models, the keys to success being the recognition of the importance of scaling and validating compressor and turbine maps. This topic is discussed in more detail than in other sources. New descriptions of turbomachinery basics are offered, and it is shown how velocity diagrams can capture the quality of a compressor or turbine stage and the effects of changes. Non-dimensional performance is explained in an unusual way, without referring to higher mathematics. The influence of inlet flow distortion and heat transfer on engine operability during transient operation is also characterized. This second edition contains new material about engine starting and windmilling, supported by how to extend existing compressor and turbine maps down to speeds as low as 1%. Unique material on map interpretation is included. The design and operation of hybrid propulsion systems are also addressed. Not only a valuable engineering textbook but also a good read!

Book excerpt: Analytical expressions are derived to show the geometric, thermodynamic, and aerodynamic relations among compressor, turbine, and exhaust nozzle for a gas-turbine engine. For a known compressor performance map, a matching method is described to show some of the design compromises that must be made when the components are to be combined into a turbine-propeller engine. A method of predicting engine performance for a range of operating conditions from known component maps is presented. An illustrative example of the matching method and the performance analysis is presented, showing some of the practical limitations of engine operation.

Book excerpt: This document describes a recent study of cost estimating relationships for new military aircraft turbine engine development and production programs. It presents equations for estimating development and production costs and time of arrival for U.S. military turbojet and turbofan engines. The study derives new cost estimating relationships from an expanded data base and uses new diagnostic statistics to screen the relationships and to evaluate the characteristics of the preferred set. Section two of this Note identifies the data used, explains the criteria and rationale for selecting explanatory variables, and describes recently developed regression diagnostics. Section three presents the preferred set of relationships. Comments on these results; a comparison with DAPCA equations; suggestions for the use of the cost estimating relationships and directions for possible future research are discussed in Section four. Supporting statistics for the predictive models are available in the Appendix. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes how regression diagnostics were used to help develop revised cost-estimating relationships for jet engines. The goal was to derive meaningful, yet easy to use models based on an updated collection of few observations and many variables. First, specific criteria were established for selecting explanatory variables. A variety of numerical and graphical techniques were then used to critique candidate models by examining residuals and evaluating the influence of individual engines. The final models are not only intuitively satisfying, but generally provide better predictions and are easier to use than earlier models. Additionally, the user is provided with a greater understanding of the design and sensitivity of the models, and therefore a better understanding of the actual estimates.

Book excerpt: The growth in competitiveness in airline industry has called for more advanced tool to estimate the operating costs. Engine maintenance costs are an important decisionmaking element during airline fleet selection judgment. Long term observation in aerospace led to the development of engine maintenance costs calculators based on empirical correlation. But the possibilities of empirical model application for future engines without prior operational data are limited. A physics-based tool to estimate the life of the engine components and predict the shop visit rate requires the variations of thermodynamic parameters over the flight path. High fidelity engine models are simulated using an engine performance program. A test program designated for design, off-design and transient performance simulation for simple turbojet layout gas turbine engine has been programmed and tested. The knowledge gained from program coding was used to generate more robust transient performance code implemented to Turbomatch. Two transient methods have been tested: The rapid transient performance method and the thermodynamic matching method. The tests showed greater robustness and stability of the second method, which has been finally adopted for the program. For industrial engine configuration and for future novel engine cycles the heat-exchanger dynamic response model was implemented and tested. Created tool was demonstrated on short-haul study of engine flight path analysis. Together with the aircraft model, the tool produced variations of parameters needed for the lifing algorithm.
