This book was released on 2019 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Moorefield Shale represents the Meramecian Series in the Eastern Arkoma Basin in northern Arkansas. Lying on the margin of the Mississippi Embayment and Reelfoot Rift, sequence stratigraphic interpretations have labelled the Moorefield Shale a lowstand wedge succeeding the Early Mississippian (Osagean) Boone Limestone conformably and overlain conformably by the Hindsville Limestone/Batesville Sandstone. The unit contains a basal brown-black limestone and succeeding brown-black phosphatic shale. The Moorefield Shale was deposited along the broad, stable cratonic platform on the southern flank of Laurasia, before it's collision with Gondwanaland to form the supercontinent Pangea at the end of the Paleozoic. During this time, the midcontinent region was covered by shallow seas and carbonates covered most of the region. A shallowly dipping carbonate ramp developed in the region providing a foundation for clastic sediment deposition. The Boone Limestone underlies the Moorefield Shale throughout the eastern Arkoma Region however, the Boone carbonate sediment was transported from its origin on the Burlington Shelf in the northwestern part of Arkansas, and thicknesses of the Boone Limestone significantly decrease to the south and east. Thinning of the Boone Limestone has allowed greater accommodation space for succeeding formations in the eastern Arkoma Basin, and has allowed the Moorefield Shale to be considerably thicker in the east. Thicknesses of the Moorefield Shale measure to approximately 100 feet in outcrop, and 350 feet or greater in the subsurface. Due to the lack of research, the Moorefield Shale offers a unique perspective into the stratigraphy and deposition of Mississippian units of the eastern Arkoma Basin.

Book Synopsis Precambrian to Earliest Mississippian Stratigraphy, Geologic History, and Paleogeography of Northwestern Colorado and West-central Colorado by : James M. Soule
Download or read book Precambrian to Earliest Mississippian Stratigraphy, Geologic History, and Paleogeography of Northwestern Colorado and West-central Colorado written by James M. Soule and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early Paleozoic of northwestern and west-central Colorado is represented by continental shelf and continental shelf marginal sedimentary rocks of Late Cambrian, Ordovician, and Late Devonian ages. Differentially epeirogenic movements along fracture systems having Precambrian origins affected sedimentation patterns and probably mostly account for intervening times of erosion or nondeposition; activity along these tectonic elements persisted into the Neogene and possibly continues. These tectonic elements are west-north-west, south-southeast, and northeast trending fracture systems and an east-trending aulacogen in the approximate area of the modern Uinta Mountains. North-central Colorado was emergent land throughout most of this time and shed clastic sediments at varying rates to the west and southwest. Episodic continental motion and the effects of the Antler orogeny to the west are probably the direct causes of these epeirogenic movements.
Book Synopsis Mechanical Stratigraphy of the Mississippian in Osage County, Oklahoma by : Caleb James Jennings
Download or read book Mechanical Stratigraphy of the Mississippian in Osage County, Oklahoma written by Caleb James Jennings and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mississippian formation of Oklahoma and Kansas has recently developed as a world class unconventional reservoir with wells producing up to 800 bbl/day. The Mississippian is composed of multiple distinct lithologic zones including limestone, hard chert, and soft tripolitic chert. These zones are difficult to discern with traditional log correlation, but mechanical stratigraphy has the potential to improve previous correlations of the Mississippian. This study uses full wave sonic logs from Osage County, OK to analyze the elastic properties of the Mississippian. Our work computes isotropic elastic parameters in an effort to partition the Mississippian section into units that may be correlated between wells. Raw material for this study consists of P-sonic, S-sonic, and density logs in two wells. From sonic log data we compute metric P- and S-wave velocities, then calculate the two independent isotropic elastic parameters (Lame's constant and shear modulus) at every log depth through the Miss and a short section above and below. Young's modulus, a key parameter related to brittleness and fracability, is shown to vary vertically and laterally in the Mississippian. Through our work to separate the Mississippian into multiple distinguishable units, we may be able to better correlate logs in this area as a guide for oil exploration mapping and completion.
