Book Synopsis Steps Toward a Planning Framework for Elder Care in the Arab World by : William B. Ward
Download or read book Steps Toward a Planning Framework for Elder Care in the Arab World written by William B. Ward and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the elder care literature pertaining to the Arab world and proposes steps that can be taken to improve the health and quality of life of older people in this region. Organized in three main sections (Program Assessment, Program Planning, Conclusions and Recommendations), the book addresses such topics as developing a conceptual framework; Arab world elder demographics; quality of life issues; demand for services; training issues; training capacity and capabilities; and conclusions and recommendations for improving the health of older persons in the Arab world. While the countries of the Arab world have the advantage of a unified language and culture that can be used to expedite development of area-wide approaches to a system of elder care, the lack of economic and political unification (such as common market and open trade) along with institutionalized age discrimination (some Arab countries restrict hiring for government and private jobs to persons younger than 45) present barriers to improving the health of older people. In addition, modernization and ease of transportation have resulted in a heavy focus on Western-style fast food, with an accompanying increase in chronic diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Download or read book Sick Societies written by David Stuckler and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic diseases-heart disease, diabetes, lung disease, and common cancers-claim more than one out of every two lives worldwide. Within the next few decades their toll will rise, most greatly in developing countries. Yet this rapid growth of chronic diseases is not being met with a proportionate global response. Left unaddressed, they pose a major threat to social and economic development. This book is the first to synthesize the growing evidence-base surrounding chronic disease, comprehensively addressing the prevention and control of chronic diseases from epidemiologic, economic, prevention/management, and political economy perspectives. Sick Societies is written in five main parts. The first three chapters explore the causes and consequences of chronic diseases on a global level. Chapter four identifi es different approaches to preventing and managing chronic diseases, while chapters five and six consider the power and politics in global health that have stymied an effective response to chronic disease. In chapter seven, the themes from the first three parts come into focus through a series of invited contributions from leading public health experts. The final chapter sets out a model of pragmatic and imaginative solidarity, wherein the struggles of the rich and poor to survive are united by a common cause and shared goals.

Book excerpt: An illustrated guide to the health needs and basic care of the elderly in Eastern Mediterranean countries, where ageing of the population is a comparatively new trend. The manual is designed for use during a simple training course for primary health care workers. Information is presented in seven self-contained modules. The first provides tips and advice on effective teaching using problem-based methods. The remaining modules outline the training needed to help primary health care workers perform a number of simple tasks, such as collecting information about the elderly in a community, recognizing the signs of common disorders and disabilities, helping to prevent accidents and injuries, and knowing when a patient must be referred to a doctor. Information on nutritional needs in the elderly, and the foods to choose or avoid, is also provided. Numerous drawings, model forms, and boxed points to remember are used to illustrate the many simple yet vital things primary health care workers can do to prevent or manage the special health problems of the elderly.
