Book excerpt: In the midst of a challenging economic recovery, the nation’s policy makers and education leaders are seeking new and potentially more effective strategies to align personal and public educational investments with job creation, increased levels of employment, small business development, and entrepreneurial activity. Reaching the 2020 national college completion goal will require powerful and fully implemented innovations in two-year colleges, particularly in states and regions where economic difficulties are more deeply entrenched. Grounded in the Midwest context, this special issue examines several promising policies and innovations that re-envision the role of two-year colleges in developing regional rather than local solutions to the emerging economic and educational challenges. This is the 157th volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Essential to the professional libraries of presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other leaders in today's open-door institutions, New Directions for Community Colleges provides expert guidance in meeting the challenges of their distinctive and expanding educational mission.

Work-integrated learning (WIL) is one of the many programmes which Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can develop to promote this facet of student life. The incorporation of work-integrated learning in curriculum design and development can produce reciprocal benefits for students, workplaces, professions and communities. Any curriculum design and development endeavour relating to WIL requires appropriate resources to support curriculum development. It further integrates practical, relevant and reflective industry experience within the higher education curriculum to enhance student development. WIL has no uniformly or specific framework or approaches since it is an emerging field and is generally influenced by contextual factors. Book Synopsis Is the Whole Greater than the Sum of its Parts? Strengthening Caribbean Regional Integration by : Abdullah Al-Hassan
Download or read book Is the Whole Greater than the Sum of its Parts? Strengthening Caribbean Regional Integration written by Abdullah Al-Hassan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deeper economic integration within the Caribbean has been a regional policy priority since the establishment of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the decision to create the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME). Implementation of integration initiatives has, however, been slow, despite the stated commitment of political leaders. The “implementation deficit” has led to skepticism about completing the CSME and controversy regarding its benefits. This paper analyzes how Caribbean integration has evolved, discusses the obstacles to progress, and explores the potential benefits from greater integration. It argues that further economic integration through liberalization of trade and labor mobility can generate significant macroeconomic benefits, but slow progress in completing the institutional arrangements has hindered implementation of the essential components of the CSME and progress in economic integration. Advancing institutional integration through harmonization and rationalization of key institutions and processes can reduce the fixed costs of institutions, providing the needed scale and boost to regional integration. Greater cooperation in several functional policy areas where the region is facing common challenges can also provide low-hanging fruit, creating momentum toward full integration as the Community continues to address the obstacles to full economic integration.
