Book Synopsis Unemployment in Transition by : Janice Bell
Download or read book Unemployment in Transition written by Janice Bell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of open unemployment is an unavoidable consequence of postcommunist transition. Some countries-notably in the former Soviet Union-initially slowed economic contraction. But in the longer run slower reformers have generally sustained deeper and more prolonged recessions than faster reforming central European countries. Moreover, the initially low unemployment rates in the former Soviet Union are now rising, and may stabilise at higher post-transition equilibrium rates than in Central Europe.

Download or read book The Baltics and Bulgaria written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper examines labor market developments in the four hard-peg European Union (EU) accession candidates during transition, with a view toward understanding the persistent high unemployment experienced in each country. Despite the significant levels of unemployment in all four countries, labor market developments suggest that the strongest and earliest reformers have had the best labor market performance as well. It is crucial that all four countries continue their policies aimed at encouraging investment and job creation. Accession to the EU will present challenges to labor markets.

Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book Synopsis Explaining the Dynamics of Spanish Unemployment by : Humberto López
Download or read book Explaining the Dynamics of Spanish Unemployment written by Humberto López and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important problems of the Spanish economy is unemployment. In this paper we provide an explanation for Spanish unemployment. We show that the Spanish economy is consistent with an insiders-outsiders model with full hysteresis and increasing labour supply in which output, unemployment and consumption are driven by a common monetary trend. We also show that, if we discount demographic factors and job destruction in agriculture, Spaish unemployment has followed closely, although with a lag of around two years, the evolution of Spanish monetary policy and it would have been in 1994 at the level of 1977. Finally, we provide some evidence supporting the hypothesis that the last recession was caused by the tight monetary policy of the eighties and early nineties.
