Book excerpt: The paper examines labor market developments in the four hard-peg European Union (EU) accession candidates during transition, with a view toward understanding the persistent high unemployment experienced in each country. Despite the significant levels of unemployment in all four countries, labor market developments suggest that the strongest and earliest reformers have had the best labor market performance as well. It is crucial that all four countries continue their policies aimed at encouraging investment and job creation. Accession to the EU will present challenges to labor markets.
Book Synopsis From the Baltic to the Balkans by : Stuart McMillan
Download or read book From the Baltic to the Balkans written by Stuart McMillan and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a life-long passion for travel, Stuart McMillan embarked on a journey of over 2,000km, crossing the continent from the Baltic Sea to the Balkan coast. The book provides personal observations and reflections on a fascinating world hidden for decades behind an Iron Curtain. It gives the reader a glimpse of how the history, culture, years of oppression and brutal wars have shaped these beautiful lands and the people who live there. Starting in Lithuania, a journey weaving through the beautiful and often mysterious Slavic lands all the way to Croatia - taking in Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It includes travelling in a 44-degree heatwave; taking a short-cut via Moscow; experiencing a chaotic sleeper train out of Ukraine; coping with the failure of all air-conditioning and lighting on a long-haul train down to Serbia; learning about the legacy of both Nazi and Communist oppression; and seeing first-hand the scars and re-built splendour of Sarajevo and Mostar following the recent brutal, and often forgotten, Yugoslav wars. As well as recounting the beauty of the countries and cities visited, and reflecting on the years of oppression and wars that shaped the landscapes and cultures, it also captures the emotions of travelling alone for weeks through foreign lands – the freedom to experience so much of countries hidden away from the world for so long; the reliance on internal narrative for company; and the bouts of homesickness that often conflict with the author’s love of travel.

This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides an innovatory internationally comparative causal analysis of the variation in political and economic outcomes of post-communist transformations after the first decade, using multi-value qualitative comparative analysis and TOSMANA software. This analysis includes a critical revision of received dichotomies (e.g. on gradualism versus "shock therapy") about post-communist transformation, a discussion of the counterfactual scripts of post-communist transformation, and contributes to current debates on the varieties of post-communist capitalism. This conceptual framework is applied in case studies of the transformation in the Baltic States, with special consideration given to the possibility of alternatives to the Lithuanian way and the challenges of populism in this country's politics. Book Synopsis Scandinavia and the Balkans by : Lena Holmquist
Download or read book Scandinavia and the Balkans written by Lena Holmquist and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together articles based on papers given at the “Scandinavia and the Balkans: Cultural Interactions with Byzantium and Eastern Europe in the First Millennium” conference, held on 25 and 26 September 2012 at the New Bulgarian University, Sofia. The conference was designed to pave the way for studies on the connections between the Balkans and Scandinavia to develop within a broader context, to promote the successes of the researchers who have dedicated their efforts to this scholarly field, and to articulate the importance of this topic to scholarly investigations, education and society. The topic of this book is one that has rarely been discussed in academic studies, while it is almost unknown in social and cultural contexts. While it may seem to deal with a rather narrow historical frame, remote from today’s reality – the relationship between two distant geographical and cultural areas in the past – in fact, the focus, or rather multiple foci on this topic offered here explore a number of aspects of the transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages in the Balkans and Scandinavia.

Book Synopsis Financial Crises and the Politics of Macroeconomic Adjustments by : Stefanie Walter
Download or read book Financial Crises and the Politics of Macroeconomic Adjustments written by Stefanie Walter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains why governments respond differently to macroeconomic problems and why necessary reforms are sometimes delayed until a serious financial crisis erupts. It argues that voter vulnerability to different reform strategies varies, and that these vulnerabilities influence the type and timing of governments' policy responses to economic crises. Empirical analyses at both the individual level across a broad range of countries and case studies of national policy responses to financial and economic crises in Asia and Eastern Europe support the argument.

Book Synopsis The Economic Crisis and its Aftermath in the Nordic and Baltic Countries by : Hilmar Þór Hilmarsson
Download or read book The Economic Crisis and its Aftermath in the Nordic and Baltic Countries written by Hilmar Þór Hilmarsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic-Baltic region has become highly integrated. The Nordic countries have been successful in balancing competitiveness and economic growth with social inclusiveness, while the Baltic States have grown economically but remain vulnerable with weak social systems and highly unequal income distribution. European Union (EU) membership and inter-linkages with the continental Nordic banking systems appear to have affected the 2008/09 crisis response of the Baltic States. In spite of their strengths, including their social systems, continental Nordic states are faced with a challenging mix of large, cross-border banks and highly indebted households at a time of rather weak global growth. The Baltic States are challenged by slow economic growth post-crisis, security concerns, and large-scale outward migration of the youngest and most highly educated people. It is now a decade since the Baltic States were hit by the global crisis. It is time to take stock of their progress and assess their relations with other countries in the region and with the EU. This book focuses on the Baltics and their Nordic partners pre- and post-crisis: successes, failures, lessons learned, and future challenges, examining and comparing the crisis response of these various small states that enjoy different income levels, operate different welfare and tax systems, and seek different levels of integration with the EU.
