The particulate matter was characterized in this study for mass concentration, metal concentrations, organic concentrations, and morphology. Trends in PM2.5 concentrations were found with ambient air temperature and wind speed. Humidity, precipitation, and wind direction had little effect on PM2.5 concentrations. This report also discusses the design, construction and preliminary assessment of a two stage (PM2.5 and PM10) ambient air-sampling instrument. Finally, the paper recommends potential areas for further research.

Book excerpt: The negative impacts of ambient aerosol particles, or particulate matter (PM), on human health and climate are well recognized. However, owing to the complexity of aerosol particle formation and chemical evolution, emissions control strategies remain difficult to develop in a cost effective manner. In this work, three studies are presented to address several key issues currently stymieing California's efforts to continue improving its air quality. Gas-phase organic mass (GPOM) and CO emission factors are used in conjunction with measured enhancements in oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA) relative to CO to quantify the significant lack of closure between expected and observed organic aerosol concentrations attributable to fossil-fuel emissions. Two possible conclusions emerge from the analysis to yield consistency with the ambient organic data: (1) vehicular emissions are not a dominant source of anthropogenic fossil SOA in the Los Angeles Basin, or (2) the ambient SOA mass yields used to determine the SOA formation potential of vehicular emissions are substantially higher than those derived from laboratory chamber studies. Additional laboratory chamber studies confirm that, owing to vapor-phase wall loss, the SOA mass yields currently used in virtually all 3D chemical transport models are biased low by as much as a factor of 4. Furthermore, predictions from the Statistical Oxidation Model suggest that this bias could be as high as a factor of 8 if the influence of the chamber walls could be removed entirely. Once vapor-phase wall loss has been accounted for in a new suite of laboratory chamber experiments, the SOA parameterizations within atmospheric chemical transport models should also be updated. To address the numerical challenges of implementing the next generation of SOA models in atmospheric chemical transport models, a novel mathematical framework, termed the Moment Method, is designed and presented. Assessment of the Moment Method strengths and weaknesses provide valuable insight that can guide future development of SOA modules for atmospheric CTMs. Finally, regional inorganic aerosol formation and evolution is investigated via detailed comparison of predictions from the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ version 4.7.1) model against a suite of airborne and ground-based meteorological measurements, gas- and aerosol-phase inorganic measurements, and black carbon (BC) measurements over Southern California during the CalNex field campaign in May/June 2010. Results suggests that continuing to target sulfur emissions with the hopes of reducing ambient PM concentrations may not the most effective strategy for Southern California. Instead, targeting dairy emissions is likely to be an effective strategy for substantially reducing ammonium nitrate concentrations in the eastern part of the Los Angeles Basin.

Book excerpt: Organic aerosol (OA) is an important component of the earth’s climate system, making up a substantial fraction of the fine aerosol mass in the atmosphere. However, the atmospheric evolution of OA after emission remains poorly characterized. A better understanding of its life cycle is critical for environmental issues ranging from air quality to climate change. In this dissertation, real-time measurements of submicron aerosols were made using a High-Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometers (AMS) during two DOE field campaigns to obtain a detailed understanding of the chemical and physical properties, sources and atmospheric processes of OA under various emission regimes. The first field study took place at a rural forest site on Long Island, NY, as part of the Aerosol Life Cycle Intensive Operation Period at Brookhaven National Lab (ALC-IOP at BNL). OA was found to dominate the submicron aerosol mass at BNL and was overwhelmingly secondary. Urban emissions transported from the New York metropolitan area led to elevated OA mass concentration and altered OA composition and physical-chemical properties at this rural site. Results suggest that mixed anthropogenic emissions and biogenic emission led to enhance secondary OA (SOA) production. The second field study took place at a high-altitude regional background site, Mt. Bachelor Observatory (MBO; ~ 2763 m a.s.l), in the western US as part of the Biomass Burning Observation Project (BBOP). Regional and free tropospheric (FT) aerosols under clean conditions were characterized. Significant compositional and physical differences between FT and boundary layer (BL) OA were observed. Free tropospheric OA was highly oxidized with low volatility, whereas OA associated with BL air masses was less oxidized and appeared to be semivolatile. For periods influenced by transported wildfires plumes during the study period, aerosol concentration at MBO increased substantially and was overwhelmingly organic. Three types of BB organic aerosol (BBOA) were identified and appeared to have been subjected to different degrees of atmospheric processing. A case study using consecutive BB plumes transported from the same fire source showed that photochemical aging led to more oxidized OA with higher mass fractions of aged BBOA and a lower fraction of fresh BBOA. Although BBOA in daytime plumes were chemically more processed than nighttime plumes, the enhancement ratios of OA relative to CO were very similar. Based on observations both at MBO and near fire sources using the DOE G-1 aircraft, BBOA concentrations and chemical properties were strongly influenced by combustion processes at the source. However, OA emissions were consistent between fresher emissions and emissions sampled after atmospheric transport. In addition, tighter correlations were observed between OA oxidation degree and plume age. These results suggest that aging leads to substantial chemical transformed and more oxidized BBOA in this study, yet BBOA concentration was conserved to a significant extent during regional transport, for which a possible reason is that SOA formation was almost entirely balanced by BBOA volatilization.

Theoretical studies have revolved mainly around a series of models developed by atmospheric scientists. The earliest of these models was constructed by Junge and his colleagues. With the advent of third- and fourth-generation computers, the capacity to solve the quite complex continuity equations whi~h govern particle formation, growth, and removal has ad vanced to the point where most of the particle properties can be simulated with reasonable confidence.

By using a newly implemented cloud microphysical scheme in the cloud-resolving model, the thesis assesses aerosol-cloud interaction for distinct weather systems, ranging from individual cumulus to mesoscale convective systems. This thesis also introduces a novel hierarchical modeling approach that solves a long outstanding mismatch between simulations by regional weather models and global climate models in the climate modeling community. More importantly, the thesis provides key scientific solutions to several challenging questions in climate science, including the global impacts of the Asian pollution. As scientists wrestle with the complexities of climate change in response to varied anthropogenic forcing, perhaps no problem is more challenging than the understanding of the impacts of atmospheric aerosols from air pollution on clouds and the global circulation.

Book excerpt: Aerosols influence Earth's heat budget both directly by scattering and absorbing sunlight, and indirectly by acting as nuclei for cloud droplets. To reduce the uncertainties of current estimates of aerosol climate forcing, aerosol optical properties relevant to the computation of direct radiative forcing were measured at a regionally representative site near Mount Mitchell, North Carolina. On the basis of these measurements and model calculations, we have studied (1) the effects of relative humidity (RH) on aerosol optical properties and direct aerosol radiative forcing and (2) the influence of long-range transport on black carbon (BC) concentrations, its seasonal and weekly patterns, and the effects of BC on the regional climate of the southeastern US. The light scattering of aerosol is strongly dependent on RH at which it is measured, due to hygroscopic growth nature of most atmospheric aerosols. In this study, the hygroscopic growth factor (ratio of total scattering coefficient at RH=80% to that at RH=30%) was calculated to be almost constant value of 1.60 +/- 0.01 for polluted, marine, and continental air masses. In addition, it was found that as the RH increased from 30% to 80%, the backscatter fraction decreased by 23%. The patterns of direct radiative climate forcing by aerosols for various values of RH were similar for the three air masses, but the magnitudes of the forcing were larger for polluted air masses than for marine and continental air masses by a factor of nearly 2 due to higher sulfate concentration in polluted air masses. The averaged forcing for all the observed ambient RHs was -2.9 W m^( -2) (the negative forcing of -3.2 by aerosol scattering plus the positive forcing of +0.3 by aerosol absorption) for polluted air masses, -1.4 W m^( -2) ( -1.5 plus +0.1) for marine air masses, and -1.5 W m^( -2) ( -1.6 plus +0.1) for continental air masses. The BC mass concentration of the southeastern US showed the highest average concentration in polluted air mas.
