Book excerpt: Abstract: Urban forests are highly fragmented in mega-cites, acting as islands in terms of preserving species diversity. To maintain the ecological services of urban forests, management measures such as reforestation have been implemented, which might have a long-term effect on biodiversity. To understand how fragmentation and reforestation affect the natural regeneration of urban forests, we investigated the relationship between forest area, isolation and seed dispersal mode and the diversity and composition of woody species at the tree, seedling, and sapling stages in 28 secondary forests of the mega-city of Wuhan, China. We found that the alpha diversity of woody species was positively correlated with forest area, while their beta diversity was negatively correlated with forest area. The beta diversity of nonanimal-dispersed species significantly correlated with isolation. Animal-dispersed plants had consistently a higher alpha diversity from trees to seedlings and saplings, while their beta diversity was lower than nonanimal-dispersed plants at the seedling and sapling stage. The community composition of woody plants in urban forests was largely congruent among the three life stages. However, only the communities of animal-dispersed plants were consistent across life stages in small or highly-isolated forest patches. The results show that the woody plant diversity of urban forests is largely similar to that expected by island theory. Animal-dispersed trees are more likely to regenerate successfully due to a more diverse set of species used in reforestation and their higher tolerance to urban forest fragmentation. More management measures for nonanimal-dispersed species, such as enriching and repeating reforestation, will be required to maintain their high biodiversity in urban forests

Book excerpt: This book will address the destruction of urban forest in nine cities by bombing during World War II and the Bosnian War and their reconstruction in the post-war years. After reviewing the general objectives and results of aerial bombing, the book explores the effects of bombing and the reconstruction of urban forest in London, Coventry, Hamburg, Dresden, St. Petersburg, Stalingrad, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Sarajevo. Sarajevo stands out among these cities because the destruction of its urban forest was the result of citizens cutting down trees for firewood during the siege of the city. Most of the cities studied developed plans for reconstruction either during or after the war. These plans often addressed the planning and re-establishment of the urban forest that had been destroyed. Urban planners often planned for infrastructure improvements such as new boulevards and parks where trees would be planted. After the war many of these plans were abandoned or significantly modified. Cost, resistance by property owners, control of reconstruction by authorities outside of the cities, and the lack of planting stock were factors contributing to the failure of many of the plans. Exceptions occurred in Hiroshima and Coventry where the destroyed cities became symbols of national reconstruction and every effort was made to redesign the destroyed portions of these cities as memorials to those who lost their lives and to demonstrate the rebirth of the cities. In several of the cities studied individual citizens undertook on their own the replanting of street and park trees. Their ingenuity, hard work, and dedication to trees in their cities was remarkable. A common factor limiting efforts to replant street and park trees was the lack of nursery stock. During and immediately after the wars nearly all nurseries that had supplied trees for city planting had been converted to vegetable gardens to produce food for the urban populations. The slow return to the production of trees for urban planting was a common factor in the time required in many cities to restore their street and park trees. There are lessons to be learned by urban planner, urban forester, and landscape architects from this book that will be useful in the future destruction of urban forest either by natural or man-made causes.

This book explores how forest restoration might be carried out to increase landscape heterogeneity, improve ecological functioning and restore ecosystem services in such landscapes. It focuses on large, landscape-scale reforestation because that is the scale at which restoration is needed if many of the problems that have now developed are to be addressed. It also shows how large-scale forest restoration might improve human livelihoods as well as improve conservation outcomes. A number of governments have undertaken national reforestation programs in recent years; some have been more successful than others. The author reviews these to explore what type of reforestation should be used, where this should be carried out and how much should be done. For example, are the traditional industrial forms of reforestation necessarily the best to use in all situations? How can forest restoration be reconciled with the need for food security? And, are there spatial thresholds that must be exceeded to generate economic and environmental benefits? The book also examines the policy and institutional settings needed to encourage large-scale reforestation. This includes a discussion of the place for incentives to encourage landholders to undertake particular types of reforestation and to reforest particular locations. It also considers forms of governance that are likely to lead to an equitable sharing of the costs and benefits of forest restoration.
