First in a car crash, then of TB. Beaten, stoned, and shot in the back. The last time, she suffocated from pneumonia. Now she's awake, again, and in the arms of James Oscar Henry Northram, Earl of Traynern. Carolly Hanson must be in training to be an angel. Why else would she keep dying and reappearing in different places and times? Clearly she is to help people, help them find true love, if she is to win her wings. And the handsome Earl, clearly a stiff-backed, dark-brooding man of means, will be her next victim—er, beneficiary. James Oscar Henry Northram is fascinated by Carolly's odd sense of humor, and compelled by her strange forthright manner and complete lack of interest in trapping him into marriage. He also thinks poor Carolly is a Bedlam escapee and isn't the least bit interested in the women she keeps pushing in his direction. Why must Carolly be forced to suffer death only to live again? Could the answer be as close as his embrace? When Oxford don Michael Flint travels to the house to trace the origins of the long-dead Choir, he is at once aware of the house's eerie menace. Who is the shadowy young man who lurks in the grounds, and why does his exact likeness appear in a sketch from 1917? What is the strange whispering that echoes through the corridors? And why is Luisa so afraid when a storm makes it necessary for Michael to spend the night inside the house? Back in Oxford, when Nell West uncovers the story of the infamous 1917 'Holzminden sketch' - the lost, legendary drawing from World War I - a dark fragment of the past begins to stir. A fragment that Michael, in the lonely old house, may not be able to resist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 7, 1881, Matthew Simpson, Bishop in the Methodist Episcopal Church, in a London sermon asserted that, "As to the divisions in the Methodist family, there is little to mar the family likeness." Nearly a quarter-century earlier, Benjamin Titus (B.T.) Roberts, a minister in the same branch of Methodism as Simpson, had published an article titled in the Northern Independent in which he argued that Methodism had split into an "Old School" and "New School." He warned that if the new school were to "generally prevail," then "the glory will depart from Methodism." As a result, Roberts was charged with "unchristian and immoral conduct" and expelled from the Genesee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC). Old or New School Methodism? examines how less than three decades later Matthew Simpson could claim that the basic beliefs and practices that Roberts had seen as threatened were in fact a source of persisting unity across all branches of Methodism. Kevin M. Watson argues that B. T. Roberts's expulsion from the MEC and the subsequent formation of the Free Methodist Church represent a crucial moment of transition in American Methodism. This book challenges understandings of American Methodism that emphasize its breadth and openness to a variety of theological commitments and underemphasize the particular theological commitments that have made it distinctive and have been the cause of divisions over the past century and a half. Old or New School Methodism? fills a major gap in the study of American Methodism from the 1850s to 1950s through a detailed study of two of the key figures of the period and their influence on the denomination.

Book excerpt: “Harvey keeps the romance and action flowing” in the second young adult fantasy romance about three young women whose witchcraft may save all of London (Kirkus Reviews). In Regency England, cousins Gretchen, Emma, and Penelope are all dealing with what it means to be a Lovegrove—part of a long line of witches who wield great magic, but who must also face great danger. As a Whisperer, Gretchen constantly hears the murmurs of other witches’ spells. And while this does help her to know when one of her own spells is going wrong, the assault on her magical senses makes it difficult to use her own gifts—especially when she’s additionally distracted by the cool-as-ice and devastatingly handsome Tobias Lawless. But while Gretchen tries to hide the truth and resolve her feelings for Tobias, London falls under an evil shadow. Only Gretchen and her cousins can stop a terrible sacrifice from unleashing an unspeakable darkness . . . With “a well-developed romance and a cliffhanger ending,” Alyxandra Harvey continues to cast a spell over anyone who loves a brilliant romantic fantasy (School Library Journal). The Whisper Witch is the 2nd book in the Witches of London Trilogy, which also includes The Secret Witch and The Bone Witch.
