Their marriage is the riskiest gamble Logan's ever taken. But he'll put everything on the line for a chance at winning Emma's heart. Rumours — Louise Allen Following a disastrous incident at a house party, Lady Isobel Jervis is exiled to the country to avoid further scandal. At the imposing Wimpole Hall, she meets architect Giles Harker. He is as eye-catching as the elegant house, but shockingly arrogant — and infuriatingly dismissive. Despite himself, Giles is strangely drawn to the haughty Isobel, and stuns her with a secret kiss in the gardens. As the illegitimate son of an infamous scarlet woman, he knows love can be dangerous. Their growing attraction could come at the cost of both their reputations. Promised to the Crusader — Anne Herries Haunted by war, Sir Zander de Bricasse is no longer the idealistic youth who left his sweetheart to join the Crusades. Years have passed and he now fully expects to find Elaine married to another. Instead, he discovers she is in grave danger... She's never forgotten his promise to wed her, but to restore their lost love she must help this brooding, tormented stranger heal the wounds of his troubled past.

Book excerpt: Never Trust a Rake Rumour has it that the Earl of Deben, the most notorious rake in London and in need of an heir, has set aside his penchant for married mistresses and turned his skilled hand to seducing innocents! But if Lord Deben expects Henrietta Gibson to respond to the click of his fingers - he's got another think coming. For she knows perfectly well why she should avoid gentlemen of his bad repute: 1. One touch of his lips and he'll ruin her for every other man.2. One glide of his skilful fingers to the neckline of her dress will leave her molten in his arms.3. And if even one in a thousand rumours is true, it's enough to know she can never, ever, trust a rake.... Reforming the Viscount Viscount Rothersthorpe can't tear his eyes from Lydia Morgan any more than he can calm the raging fury coursing through his veins. Is there no end to the irony? Come to town to find a wife only to be taunted by the past? Furtive glances across the ballroom are not helping to ease Lydia's state of shock - the man who once uttered a marriage proposal as one might remark upon the weather has returned. But when he stuns her with a second outrageous - but now wickedly delicious - proposal, it is clear that despite the rumours, the rake from her past has not reformed!

Book excerpt: Follow the continuing adventures of Juliet Sinclair as she searches for the truth in Regency England Juliet, A Sinclair Society Short Story: The story begins... Just returned from a few weeks in London, seventeen-year-old Juliet Sinclair is eager to convince her mother that they should have a house party. These plans are forgotten when terrible news arrives concerning her brother. Juliet is not prepared for how her life is about to change. Regency Rumors: Juliet Sinclair knows her family are not traitors to the crown-the difficulty is in proving it. Driven by a desire to save the Sinclair name from disgrace, Juliet seeks assistance from her father's old friends, the Burnhams. Unfortunately, her arrival does not go as expected, and Juliet finds herself mistakenly assuming the role of lady's maid to Mrs. Burnham and her daughter Eugenia. This unintentional appointment provides her with an opportunity to gain Mrs. Burnham's confidence and to investigate the treasonous rumors against her family as she assists Eugenia with preparations for her first London Season. But a grave threat hangs over the denizens of Burnham House, and Juliet has uncovered evidence that might prevent the family from suffering her own disastrous fate... if she can reveal the truth in time. The Debutante: Juliet Sinclair knows her brother was murdered-now if only she could understand why. Proving her family innocent of treason is taking a toll on lady-turned-maid Juliet. Her latest investigation has brought her into the service of the spoiled Miss Dunbar and her salacious older brother, who pursues Juliet despite repeated rebuffs. Complicating matters further is the reappearance of Juliet's former beau who has not yet learned to do without her, and a growing attraction between herself and her brother's witty--and handsome--best friend. Even with these distractions, Juliet begins to piece together the events surrounding her brother's final days--and his connection to a mysterious figure named only as "H." But Juliet's ruse is under threat of revelation, and her blackmailer is one who will not hesitate to burn her unless she gives him what he wants: every document related to her brother's former role as a spy for His Majesty against the French. Clarendon Estate: Juliet Sinclair must unmask a murderer before her own false identity is revealed... Clarendon Estate, the country home of Sir Horace and Lady Celia Leith, has been a refuge for Juliet Sinclair after the traumatic events of Bath. It may also be the home of a murderer. All signs point to a significant connection between Sir Horace and Juliet's brother, and the more she investigates, the stronger her belief that the man may be the mysterious H she is searching for. But revealing a murderer has consequences Juliet hadn't expected. In continuing her ruse of servitude, Juliet finds herself forming a close bond with Lady Leith as they thwart the designs of Sir Horace's domineering mother, a woman who will do all she can to keep control of the household. Can Juliet condemn her new friend to a life with such a woman as her only family? Time is running short. A house party is set to descend on Clarendon, bringing with it the threat of more than one person who may reveal Juliet's true identity and destroy her careful plans to keep her name above scandal. But the truth is closer than she realizes...

Even if that meant putting herself on the Marriage Mart during a London season she could ill afford – and did not desire. Now ironic circumstance have wed her to the compelling Marquess of Englemere, a fabled gamester, who has awakened passions she was honour–bound not to express. A marriage of convenience could be deucedly inconvenient – even for a marquess – when one was perilously close to loving his own wife! But Nicholas Stanhope knew that was impossible, for hadn't his tragic past proven that women – especially wives – were not to be trusted? A Scandalous Proposal Threatened by extortionists, disowned widow Emily Spenser has little recourse – until the Earl of Cheverley, captivated by this unusual shopkeeper, comes to her aide. Emily cannot repay the Earl's expenditures – not in coin. But having learned through bitter experience not to trust the largesse of powerful men and desperate to stay hidden from the father–in–law who would take away her son, she seeks to cancel her obligation to the highly visible earl immediately. Little does she realise a “fleeting” affair will lead to something much more...

Book excerpt: The first three decades of Bourbon rule in France coincided with a period of violent fragmentation followed by rapid renewal within the French Catholic community. In the early 1590s, when Henri IV - Protestant head of the Bourbon house - acceded to the throne, French Catholics were at war with each other as Leaguer and Navarrist factions fought both militarily and ideologically for control of Catholic France. However, by 1620 a partially reconciled French church was in the process of defining a distinctive reform movement as French Catholics, encouraged by their monarchs, sought to assimilate aspects of the international Catholic reformation with Gallican traditions to renew their church. By 1650 this French Catholic church, and its distinctive reform movement forged in the decades following the collapse of the Catholic League, had become one of the most influential movements in European Catholicism. This study reconsiders the forces behind these dramatic developments within the French church through the re-examination of a classic question in French history: Why was the Society of Jesus able to integrate successfully into the French church in the opening decades of the seventeenth-century, despite being expelled from much of the kingdom in 1594 for its alleged role in the attempted assassination of the king? The expulsion, recall and subsequent integration of the Society into the French church offers a unique window into the evolution of French Catholicism between 1590 and 1620. It provides new insight into how Henri IV re-established royal authority in the French Catholic church following the collapse of the Catholic League and how this development helped to heal the rifts in French Catholicism wrought by the Leaguer movement. It also explores in unprecedented detail how Henri played an important role in channelling religious energy in his kingdom towards forms of Catholic piety -exemplified by his new allies the Jesuits - which became the foundation of
