Diffusés à l'époque uniquement sous forme de polycopiés, ces cours étaient devenus quasiment inaccessibles alors même qu'ils constituent un moment important de la vie doctrinale française et que leurs enseignements restent d'une actualité certaine. Centré sur le droit de la famille, le premier cours permet de mieux comprendre la philosophie particulière qui animait la "révolution tranquille" opérée par le doyen Carbonnier sous l'impulsion de Jean Foyer et le patronage du Général de Gaulle. Pluralisme, réalisme et autoscepticisme constituent l'esprit de la législation nouvelle, laquelle se veut tout à la fois un code populaire et une oeuvre scientifique grâce au rôle donné à la sociologie juridique et à la place faite au langage courant et à la langue savante. C'est dire qu'on ne saurait trouver meilleure introduction à ce que fut le "printemps des lois". Traitant du droit des obligations conventionnelles, le second cours renferme tout à la fois le premier constat de la nécessité d'une réforme du droit des obligations ainsi qu'un discours de la méthode destiné à guider un législateur à venir. Le doyen Gérard Cornu est ainsi le premier à avoir dressé le bilan d'ensemble et à avoir ouvert les voies de la réflexion qui devaient conduire, quarante ans plus tard, à la réforme opérée par l'ordonnance du 10 février 2016. C'est dire l'actualité de son propos. La somme de ces deux cours offre la réflexion la plus aboutie sur la rénovation du Code civil entreprise il y a un peu plus de cinquante ans.
