Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zones on the skin referred to the spinal levels Dermatomes were the first major achievements of modern neurology . Thus Head 1893 could explain the segmental structure of our peripheral nervous system and the connections to the skin. Over time, the explanations by the autonomic nervous system received more extensive meanings and in the course the approaches taken by the techniques in the connective tissue could then be explained. As precisely segmental the dermatomes may appear they are not associated with just one level of the spine. On the one hand, the spinal nerves unite between two vertebrae to a nerve root and on the other hand through the autonomic sympathetic chain there are cross-segmental nerve circuits in the direction to the skin. Each skin area of a dermatome thus corresponds to at least two spinal levels, resulting in a difficulty to prove sometimes a particular nerve root. Dear friends of reflexology, thank you for your interest in my reflexology charts which have proven their effectiveness in nearly three decades. The charts of the »maps of health« represent the organs as icons. This offers a symbolic language which allows an orientation at a glance in all reflexology systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muscle assignments to the spinal levels Following to the dermatomes and the sclerotomes also the myotomes came closer to the interest of neurologists. The myotomes are segmental origin and refer strictly only to the neurological associations of the muscles to the spinal nerve roots of the respective levels. Muscles are connected synergistically and antagonistically to complex movement patterns into muscle chains. Disturbances in these movement patterns lead to inefficient movement strategies that require a lot of energy and become noticeable as painful muscular trigger points and trigger chains. Further muscular aspects can be found in kinesiology which has discovered clear connections of the muscles to organ functions according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine. Book excerpt: Zones of the bones referred to the spinal levels Once Henry Head had described the dermatomes theneurologist were looking for additional systems that followed a particular organization. Inman and Saunders found this on the bones, more precisely on the periosteum, and published their findings in 1944. Later Vogler should develop his massage of the periosteum from this. Sclerotomes are sensitive regions on the periosteum, which allow statements about a segmental disorder. Thus we have an interesting tool to specifically clarify segmental causes of problems, especially painful issues and “Referred Pain” sensations. For the treatments in the sclerotomes next to a rather painful massage these reflexology areas resp. the environment of it can be infiltrated with specific homeopathic injections or illuminated with specific light in different colours. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to reflexology treatments combined with complementary therapies to restore energetic balance, relieve pain, and support healing • Provides more than 30 full-color maps of reflex zone systems from head to toe, including the ears, mouth, tongue, fingernails, and torso • Explains how to incorporate supportive therapies such as essential oils, crystal wand massage, and visualization to maximize healing • Examines the history and evolution of reflexology, revealing both its Eastern and Western roots, as well as recent international advancements Expanding the practice of reflexology beyond the feet and hands, Ewald Kliegel illustrates how to precisely and quickly treat different emotional and physical disorders with an integrated combination of reflexology and complementary therapies. Applying the fundamental principles of reflexology to the entire body, he provides more than 30 full-color maps of reflex zones from head to toe, including reflex zone systems of the ears, mouth, tongue, fingernails, and torso. The author details reflexology techniques for each reflex zone and discusses how to incorporate essential oils and gemstones during active touch and reflexology sessions, including the benefits of crystal massage for post-stroke recovery. Drawing on international advancements in reflexology, including the work of craniosacral reflexologist Martine Faure-Alderson, Russian researcher Alexander Kachan, Chinese biologist Zhang Yingquing, and Korean physician Tae Woo Yoo, Kliegel examines how to integrate Yin-Yang massage strokes, metacarpal reflexology techniques, Korean Hand treatments, and craniosacral massage principles into reflexology treatments to restore energetic balance, relieve pain, and support healing. He outlines specific treatment protocols, including holistic reflexology treatments for headache, digestive problems, and back pain. Providing step-by-step instructions for diagnostic testing, he also outlines supportive approaches such as visualization to balance the energies of the body and an active meditation to troubleshoot congested locales in the body. Examining the history and evolution of reflexology, the author reveals not only the ancient Eastern medical practices that played a role in reflexology’s genesis, but also its ancient European roots. Providing a truly holistic and integrative approach to reflexology, Kliegel reveals many different hands-on paths to healing that embrace the energetic interconnections of mind and body.

Every chapter of this well-established practical guide has been completely updated and revised. All aspects of obstetric medicine relevant to the anaesthetist are covered, from pre-pregnancy management to conception, throughout pregnancy, to postnatal care. The authors have identified over 150 potential complications, each covered in two parts: 'problems/special considerations' and 'management options', with key points prominently displayed for quick reference. A section on organisational aspects such as record keeping, training protocols and guidelines makes this an important resource for any labour ward or hospital dealing with pregnant women. Presented in a clear, structured format, this practical summary will be invaluable to any anaesthetist encountering obstetric patients, whether they are a practiced consultant or still in training. It will also be useful for obstetricians, neonatologists, midwives, nurses and operating department practitioners wishing to extend or update their knowledge.

Book excerpt: Advances in itch research have elucidated differences between itch and pain but have also blurred the distinction between them. There is a long debate about how somatic sensations including touch, pain, itch, and temperature sensitivity are encoded by the nervous system. Research suggests that each sensory modality is processed along a fixed, direct-line communication system from the skin to the brain. Itch: Mechanisms and Treatment presents a timely update on all aspects of itch research and the clinical treatment of itch that accompanies many dermatological conditions including psoriasis, neuropathic itch, cutaneous t-cells lymphomas, and systemic diseases such as kidney and liver disease and cancer. Composed of contributions from distinguished researchers around the world, the book explores topics such as: Neuropathic itch Peripheral neuronal mechanism of itch The role of PAR-2 in neuroimmune communication and itch Mrgprs as itch receptors The role of interleukin-31 and oncostatin M in itch and neuroimmune communication Spinal coding of itch and pain Spinal microcircuits and the regulation of itch Examining new findings on cellular and molecular mechanisms, the book is a compendium of the most current research on itch, its prevalence in society, and the problems associated with treatment.
