Book excerpt: Suwannee County is filled with forgotten echoes of its lost past, from demolished pioneer homes to defunct railroads to lost forts from the Seminole Wars. In the 1830s, ecotourism arrived. Local sulfur springs, with their grand hotels and health resorts, drew travelers from around the world for a dip in the same healing waters of the Suwannee River traversed by steamboats. Thundering iron horses brought citizens and industry into the county, making Live Oak one of the largest cities in Florida in the early twentieth century. Landmarks and communities like the opulent Suwannee Springs resort and the once-flourishing riverbank town of Columbus disappeared in the face of progress. Lifelong resident and historian Eric Musgrove launches an entertaining and informative journey through Suwannee County's lost history.

Book excerpt: Named for the river made famous in song and surrounded by it on three sides, Suwannee County was established on December 21, 1858. Its humble beginnings were interrupted by the Civil War, but within a few decades, thousands flocked to the warm climate to make a fortune in timber, cotton, and naval stores. Others visited world-renowned springs that helped to turn Suwannee County into a vacationer's dream at the close of the 19th century. The clearing of the virgin timber, destruction of the cotton crop, and speedy growth of South Florida during and after World War I led to an economic slump and altered the lifestyles of many local citizens. Suwannee County continues to attract thousands of visitors and new residents every year with the pristine beauty of the Suwannee River and the promise of quiet living in a rural setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly two hundred years, Floridians have eagerly exploited tourism as the key to economic prosperity. As a result, the state has constantly reshaped and remodeled itself as different types of tourist heavens, and many aspects of its history have become inseparable from the fantastic images created by the tourism industry. From spa retreats to nature preserves, from riverboat rides to roller coasters, and from railroads to theme parks, the state’s dependence on tourism has greatly shaped its identity. Sunshine Paradise is the first book to focus exclusively on how--and why--tourism came to define Florida. Offering a concise look at the subject from the 1820s to the present, Tracy Revels demonstrates tourism’s relevance to all other major aspects of Florida history, including the Civil War, the land boom, and civil rights. In this enjoyable and well-written history, Revels shows how Florida’s tourism industry has remained adaptive and expansive, ready to sell the next version of paradise to northerners hungry for sunshine. She also explains why the state’s business and political leaders must consider the history of tourism development as they plan for the state’s future. A volume in the Florida History and Culture Series, edited by Raymond Arsenault and Gary R. Mormino

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author William Bradford Huie was one of the most celebrated figures of twentieth-century journalism. A pioneer of "checkbook journalism," he sought the truth in controversial stories when the truth was hard to come by. In the case of James Earl Ray, Huie paid Ray and his original attorneys $40,000 for cooperation in explaining his movements in the months before Martin Luther King’s assassination and up to Ray’s arrest weeks later in London. Huie became a major figure in the investigation of King’s assassination and was one of the few persons able to communicate with Ray during that time. Huie, a friend of King, writes that he went into his investigation of Ray believing that a conspiracy was behind King’s murder. But after retracing Ray’s movements through California, Louisiana, Mexico, Canada, Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, and London, Huie came to believe that James Earl Ray was a pathetic petty criminal who hated African Americans and sought to make a name for himself by murdering King. He Slew the Dreamer was originally published in 1970 soon after Ray went to prison and was republished in 1977, but was out of print until the 1997 edition, published with the cooperation of Huie’s widow. This new edition features an essay by scholar Riché Richardson that provides fresh insight, and it includes the 1977 prologue, which Huie wrote countering charges by members of Congress, the King family, and others who claimed the FBI had aided and abetted Ray. In 1970, 1977, 1997, and now, He Slew the Dreamer offers a remarkably detailed examination of the available evidence at the time the murder occurred and an invaluable resource to current debates over the King assassination.
