Book excerpt: With waves of reform initiatives rolling into schools from external sources demanding quotas and sanctions, how does a principal effectively reflect, assess, and learn from past reforms and day-to-day experiences? Studies of the urban high school principalship lack a "thick description" (Geertz, 1973) of the principals' hour-by-hour daily challenges and the way principals think about those challenges. The purpose of the study was to describe and analyze the urban high school principalship from an in-depth perspective of a principal involved in an intense high school reform effort at his school. The principal in focus is also the author of the study. This study utilized a qualitative exploratory case study design detailing, describing, and analyzing the principal's activities, thinking, and leadership qualities. The unique strength of the exploratory case study is its ability to deal with a full variety of evidence beyond what might be available in a conventional historical study. This study will add to the "neglected area of inquiry" of exploring the internal mental processes and practices cited by Leithwood (1988). The findings of this study, the in-depth description and analysis of the urban high school principalship, revealed clear themes of thinking, questioning, and confrontation of conflicts I experienced as a principal. The findings of this study identified two final emergent themes that captured recurring patterns of significance. They reflect the complexity of educational reform, not only in the pursuit of addressing high-stakes accountability measures, closing the achievement gap, and preparing students for college, but also in the developing thoughts in the mind of the practicing principal. It is important that, in the context of complex educational reform, principals would practice the discipline of deep reflection and critical analysis of their leadership practices to ensure they are leading schools where students are achieving meaningful learning. This research also serves as a springboard for further research and for informing the practice of those who are principals and for those who are preparing to be principals.

Though a plan had been implemented in 1970, this plan was reversed by a higher court in 1981 resulting in school closings, teacher transfers, and students bussed miles from home just days before school started. These unexpected changes put burdens on principals, teachers, and staff, as they did their best in a time of uncertainty. These stories, many never shared before, took place during the court-ordered integration plan, and the process of trying to educate students despite the chaos. They examine the experience of combining students from differing cultures, while striving for positive results for all. These differences were not always black or white. Dr. Mack Hargis, former teacher, coach, principal, and school board member, offers an insider's perspective on the path to the MNPS's integration.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed method study is to examine what new principals say they learned and the sources of the learning that inform their thoughts and actions as instructional leaders. The research questions proposed for this study emphasize who (new principals), what (their espoused theories and theories in use as instructional leaders based on prior learning), where (high-stakes accountability environment), and how (they interpret their actions and the influence of those actions on the school culture and climate). The two research questions proposed for this study ask: (1) What do new principals say they learned about leading instruction? and (2) What were the sources of their learning? In this study, empirically-based standards and theories of meaning, learning, and action, provide an understanding of the origin of theories in action and are the foundation for instrument development and qualitative analyses on the link between the sources of acquired knowledge, espoused theories, and theories in use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed in response to the growing interest in examining individual schools as they undergo change, this book features eight case studies of urban elementary and high schools as they face problems and attempt to find solutions in their quest to reform themselves. The cases, with all their pitfalls and problems, provide examples of the very bumpy road of change and of the individual school cultures that sometimes support and often impede reform. Told in the individual voices of various school leaders, the narratives reflect the inevitable biases of people immersed in their work. Their richness derives from the passion with which these stories are told. Textured and complex, these chronicles invite readers to think deeply about the many layers involved in the process of changing schools. School Leadership in Times of Urban Reform is a powerful text for courses in educational leadership, school reform, and the politics of education. Engaging pedagogical features at the end of each case facilitate its use: *Each case ends with an "Analysis of Leadership" section and "Extended Thinking" questions and activities. *Sections 2-5 conclude with "Reflections" to help the reader uncover the major themes and issues. Section 1 is an introductory analysis of reform and school leadership; it provides a frame of reference for examining the case studies that follow. Sections 2-5 are organized around eight case studies (two per section) that address questions of how the leadership roles of school principals and teachers have been shaped by the reform initiative; how parents and local communities have contributed to school reform; and how the culture of the school, and teaching and learning, have been shaped by reform. The final section synthesizes and analyzes what the authors have learned through these cases concerning the leadership roles of principals, parents, community members, and teachers during the period of reform; how the cultures of schools changed as reform progressed; and how reform impacted the instructional practices of teachers and the learning of students.

Book excerpt: Many urban educators live in fear: of their schools being labeled failures, of increasingly punitive sanctions, of loss of respect and livelihood. This fear pervades the entire school community, affecting the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of its members. The authors of this guide to transformation in urban schools are convinced that the key ingredient for school renewal is fearless leadership. Fearless leaders work in schools under-resourced and overburdened and serve disproportionately large numbers of children who live in poverty and face racism daily. They are ordinary educators committed to proving that demographics need not be destiny. This inspirational yet practical book will help you bridge the divide that separates urban students from their birthright of a high-quality education. You will learn how to * Adopt a leadership approach, consisting of affirmation, inspiration, and mediation (AIM), that will transform your school into a flourishing learning community. * Build a leadership team of important stakeholders--including students--that is committed to improvement. * Tap into the resources that already exist in your school and jettison institutional arrangements that prevent your school from becoming an enriching and creative community. * Create supports that enable teachers to nurture their students' potential to meet high standards and become self-actualized learners. Each chapter closes with reflections and activities that will help your leadership team produce its own roadmap for change. Succeeding in the tough landscape of urban schools requires more than just passion and a sense of urgency; it requires real skills. Aim High, Achieve More provides insights gleaned from real-world experiences that will enable you to create a successful, vibrant learning environment.

Book excerpt: Memoir and Perspectives of an Urban Public School Principal on Public Education Reform A Primer on School Leadership and Public Schools Advocacy Book Summary The book contributes to the national discourse on public education. It develops the reader's perspective in a framework defined by the state constitutional mandate to educate our youth as a compelling state interest, the public's trust, prevailing myths imbedded in education issues, and the public education bureaucracy as an agent of state government. The impact of the bureaucracy, labor management agreements, and certification programs on school leadership and classroom teaching is illuminated by analysis, argument, and practical experience. The book concludes with recommendations for reform and an appeal for broad support of our public schools.

Based on the authors' Transformational Leadership Framework, which they developed through in-depth study of more than 100 high-gaining, high-poverty schools, the book distills findings into a practical, action-focused plan for diagnosing school needs and implementing structures, systems and practices that accelerate student achievement. Brought to life by case studies of principals who have led dramatic gains in student achievement, the book is a how-to guide for increasing the quality of teaching and learning; improving school culture; attracting and supporting high-performing teachers; and involving parents and community to help students achieve. You'll learn how breakthrough principals make the school's mission a real part of both strategy and practice, and set up sustainable systems that support consistent, ongoing improvement. High-impact practices are organized into five broad categories: learning and teaching, school-wide culture, aligned staff, operations and systems, and personal leadership. The primary job of school leadership is to help students succeed. It begins with first recognizing and prioritizing areas of need, then finding and implementing the most effective solutions. Whether you work in a turn around environment, or want to make a good school better, this book will give you a set of concrete practices—illustrated through examples of real principals in real schools—that have been proven to work.
