Book excerpt: When a sound beam strikes an interface between materials ofdifferent acoustic velocity or impedance properties, longitudinaland shear waves are reflected and refracted at the interface. Acomputer program has been written to compute the amplitude andenergy of the waves reflected and refracted at the water/metalinterface and the metal/water interface of a metal block immersedin water. The time of flight and the path travelled by thelongitudinal and shear waves in the metal are also computed.

Book excerpt: Laws of reflection and refraction of compression and shear elastic waves at the boundary between media are considered and taken into account in a lot of solutions of scientific and technical problems. Without calculations made on the basis of these laws it is impossible to determine the earthquake epicentre coordinates, location of a producing horizon, solving the problems of noise reduction etc. in seismology, geophysics, industrial engineering, architecture. In the book are considered all cases of reflection and refraction of compression and shear elastic waves on the flat border between two different media. Two solids, a solid and liquid, a liquid and solid, two liquids, a solid and vacuum have been analyzed. The waves propagating along the flat interface are discussed. Qualitative and limited quantitative analyses of the influence of the adjoining media properties on the processes of reflection and refraction have been made. The book presents designs of transducers for elastic waves with the use of interface. The material set forth can be used as a reference book. The book is designed for specialists working in the field of acoustics, seismics, geophysics and non-destructive control of materials.

Book excerpt: Waves in Layered Media discusses different theories about the relationship between waves and media. The book specifically covers several factors that can affect the behavior and formation of various kinds of waves in different types of media. Comprised of nine chapters, the book establishes the fundamentals by first tackling simplest concepts, such as the behavior plane wave and discretely layered media. The succeeding chapters cover much more complex ideas, such as the refraction and reflection of waves, spherical wave, and wave in inhomogeneous media. The book will be a great asset to researchers whose work involves acoustics, or to professionals whose line of work involves sound waves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasonic guided waves in solid media have become a critically important subject in nondestructive testing and structural health monitoring, as new faster, more sensitive, and more economical ways of looking at materials and structures have become possible. This book will lead to fresh creative ideas for use in new inspection procedures. Although the mathematics is sometimes sophisticated, the book can also be read by managers without detailed understanding of the concepts as it can be read from a 'black box' point of view. Overall, the material presented on wave mechanics - in particular, guided wave mechanics - establishes a framework for the creative data collection and signal processing needed to solve many problems using ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. The book can be used as a reference in ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation by professionals and as a textbook for seniors and graduate students. This work extends the coverage of Rose's earlier book Ultrasonic Waves in Solid Media.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of sound waves with the medium through which they pass can be used to investigate the thermophysical properties of that medium. With the advent of modern instrumentation, it is now possible to determine the speed and absorption of sound with extremely high precision and, through the dependence of those quantities on variables like temperature, pressure, and frequency to gain a sensitive measure of one or more properties of fluid. This has led to renewed interest in such measurements and in the extraction of thermophysical properties of gases and liquids there from. Physical Acoustics and Metrology of Fluids describes both how to design experiments to achieve the highest possible accuracy and how to relate the quantities measured in those experiments to the thermophysical properties of the medium. A thorough theoretical examination of the alternative experimental methods available is designed to guide the experimentalist toward better and more accurate methods. This theoretical analysis is enhanced and complemented by an in-depth discussion of practical experimental techniques and the problems inherent within them. Bringing together the fields of thermodynamics, kinetic theory, fluid mechanics, and theoretical acoustics, plus a wealth of information about practical instruments, this book represents an essential reference on the design and execution of valuable experiments in fluid metrology and physical acoustics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafloor investigation has long been a feature of not only seismology but also of acoustics. Indeed it was acoustics that produced depth sounders, giving us the first capability of producing both global and local maps of the seafloor. Subsequently, better instrumentation and techniques led to a clearer, more quantitative picture of the seabed itself, which stimulated new hypotheses such as seafloor spreading through the availability of more reliable data on sediment thickness over ocean basins and other bottom features. Geologists and geophysicists have used both acoustic and seismic methods to study the seabed by considering the propagation of signals arising from both natural seismic events and man-made impulsive sources. Although significant advances have been made in instrumentation, such as long towed geophysical arrays, ai r guns and ocean bot tom seismometers, the pic ture of the seafloor is still far from complete. Underwater acoustics concerns itself today with the phenomena of propagation and noise at frequencies and ranges that require an understanding of acoustic interaction at both of its boundaries, the sea surface and seafloor, over depths ranging from tens to thousands of meters. Much of the earlier higher frequency (>1 kHz) work included the characterization of the seafloor in regimes of reflection coefficients which were empirically derived from surveys. The results of these studies met with only limited success, confined as they were to those areas where survey data existed and lacking a physical understanding of the processes of reflection and scattering.
