Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects the articles presented at the Third International Conference on ?The Navier-Stokes Equations: Theory and Numerical Methods?, held in Oberwolfach, Germany. The articles are important contributions to a wide variety of topics in the Navier-Stokes theory: general boundary conditions, flow exterior to an obstacle, conical boundary points, the controllability of solutions, compressible flow, non-Newtonian flow, magneto-hydrodynamics, thermal convection, the interaction of fluids with elastic solids, the regularity of solutions, and Rothe's method of approximation.
Book Synopsis Lp-Theory for Incompressible Newtonian Flows by : Matthias Köhne
Download or read book Lp-Theory for Incompressible Newtonian Flows written by Matthias Köhne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is devoted to the study of the basic equations of fluid dynamics. First Matthias Köhne focuses on the derivation of a class of boundary conditions, which is based on energy estimates, and, thus, leads to physically relevant conditions. The derived class thereby contains many prominent artificial boundary conditions, which have proved to be suitable for direct numerical simulations involving artificial boundaries. The second part is devoted to the development of a complete Lp-theory for the resulting initial boundary value problems in bounded smooth domains, i.e. the Navier-Stokes equations complemented by one of the derived energy preserving boundary conditions. Finally, the third part of this thesis focuses on the corresponding theory for bounded, non-smooth domains, where the boundary of the domain is allowed to contain a finite number of edges, provided the smooth components of the boundary that meet at such an edge are locally orthogonal.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics: Volume 2: Compressible Models by : Pierre-Louis Lions
Download or read book Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics: Volume 2: Compressible Models written by Pierre-Louis Lions and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid mechanics models consist of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations for which, despite a long history of important mathematical contributions, no complete mathematical understanding is available. The second volume of this book describes compressible fluid-mechanics models. The book contains entirely new material on a subject known to be rather difficult and important for applications (compressible flows). It is probably a unique effort on the mathematical problems associated with the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, written by one of the world's leading experts on nonlinear partial differential equations. Professor P.L. Lions won the Fields Medal in 1994.
Book Synopsis Functional Calculus of Pseudodifferential Boundary Problems by : Gerd Grubb
Download or read book Functional Calculus of Pseudodifferential Boundary Problems written by Gerd Grubb and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pseudodifferential methods are central to the study of partial differential equations, because they permit an "algebraization." The main purpose of this book is to set up an operational calculus for operators defined from differential and pseudodifferential boundary values problems via a resolvent construction. A secondary purposed is to give a complete treatment of the properties of the calculus of pseudodifferential boundary problems with transmission, both the first version by Boutet de Monvel (brought completely up to date in this edition) and in version containing a parameter running in an unbounded set. And finally, the book presents some applications to evolution problems, index theory, fractional powers, spectral theory and singular perturbation theory. Thus the book’s improved proofs and modern points of view will be useful to research mathematicians and to graduate students studying partial differential equations and pseudodifferential operators.

Book Synopsis Initial-Boundary Value Problems and the Navier-Stokes Equation by : Heinz-Otto Kreiss
Download or read book Initial-Boundary Value Problems and the Navier-Stokes Equation written by Heinz-Otto Kreiss and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initial-Boundary Value Problems and the Navier-Stokes Equations gives an introduction to the vast subject of initial and initial-boundary value problems for PDEs. Applications to parabolic and hyperbolic systems are emphasized in this text. The Navier-Stokes equations for compressible and incompressible flows are taken as an example to illustrate the results. The subjects addressed in the book, such as the well-posedness of initial-boundary value problems, are of frequent interest when PDEs are used in modeling or when they are solved numerically. The book explains the principles of these subjects. The reader will learn what well-posedness or ill-posedness means and how it can be demonstrated for concrete problems. Audience: when the book was written, the main intent was to write a text on initial-boundary value problems that was accessible to a rather wide audience. Functional analytical prerequisites were kept to a minimum or were developed in the book. Boundary conditions are analyzed without first proving trace theorems, and similar simplifications have been used throughout. This book continues to be useful to researchers and graduate students in applied mathematics and engineering.
