Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy-six million Baby Boomers are careening toward retirement in the United States. Demographic shifts toward aging populations are taking place around the Western world, as a variety of factors—biological, technological, medical, and sociocultural—are extending life spans. Meanwhile, birth rates are declining. The scaremongers argue that this generational shift is going to be disastrous: It will result in skyrocketing tax rates, lower retirement and health benefits, higher inflation, increased unemployment and poverty, political instability, and a host of other societal ills. But will it? In Boomer Bust?, Robert Hudson assembles leading authors from fields such as economics, political science, and finance to separate fact from fiction, highlight the terms of debate, and showcase innovative policies that will prevent disaster from occurring. From topics like Social Security to older people rejoining the workforce to the elderly as a political lobby, this two-volume set covers the gamut of economic, political, financial, and business issues related to aging. The Boomer generation will leave one of the largest footprints the world has yet seen. In retirement, as in all else, this generation is blazing a path affecting succeeding generations profoundly. Boomer Bust? charts a path through the thicket of personal and public policy choices facing not just Baby Boomers but all of society.

Book excerpt: Certain activities and events both inside and outside a vehicle can distract drivers and lead to degraded performance. New technologies- such as entertainment, communication, and driver assistance systems- play a significant role in distraction. This unique volume defines driver distraction, discusses various causes, and explains how to measure acceptable and unacceptable levels of distraction. Several chapters address measurement techniques based on performance and epidemiological studies. Most importantly, the text explores ways to mitigate driver distraction as well as countermeasures including vehicle design and effective legislation.

Book excerpt: To answer the question of whether New Jersey's mature drivers present an increased risk of injury and fatalities to themselves and others, analyses of accident and violation records were performed. A survey was also conducted of a sample of State Departments of Motor Vehicles regarding licensing of mature drivers. The data analyses showed that New Jersey's older drivers, similar to those in other states, are involved in fewer crashes when compared to other age groups. Their rate of crash involvement per population also decreases. For crash involvements per licensed driver, we found a similar pattern of decrease with age until the drivers reached their mid-nineties. Then the trend showed an increase. Mature drivers have accidents in different places and times than do younger drivers and may be less safe than middle-aged drivers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies have shown that older drivers (65 yrs-and-older) are prone to an increased risk of crash involvement per vehicle mile traveled and are more likely to be severely injured or killed as a result of a crash. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) 2014 Handbook for Designing Roadways for the Aging Population presents a list of roadway features and their associated design elements that need to be considered when designing with the aging adults in mind. While the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has placed an increased focus on implementing engineering countermeasures making driving safe for older drivers since 2004, there are additional opportunities to improve design guidance in accordance with the FHWA Handbook, as well as other published best practice resources. The main objective of this study was to analyze the association of older adult crashes with roadway features and provide guidance in roadway design to MDOT. With analysis results, a detailed review of the FHWA Handbook and understanding of MDOT's road design guidance, opportunities for potential enhancements to MDOT's design guidance were identified and are documented in this report.
