Book Synopsis The Softer Side of Leadership by : Eugene B. Habecker
Download or read book The Softer Side of Leadership written by Eugene B. Habecker and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many who lead or who aspire to lead rightly champion the importance of hard skills. These are skills that are informed by quantitative measurement and analytical thinking, among others. Knowing the numbers, embracing leadership tasks, and implementing the right strategies are important but no longer enough to be an effective leader. Indeed, the best of the leadership literature consistently emphasizes the importance of soft skills as this quote illustrates: "The capabilities required of top leaders include new and often ‘softer’ skills that are rarely explicitly recognized or fostered in the corporate world." (Harvard Business Review, July-August, 2022, p.42) In The Softer Side of Leadership, Dr. Habecker, who spent 35 consecutive years as a CEO of two universities and one large NYC non-profit, makes the case for the integration of soft skills into every aspect of the leader’s personal life and the organizational agenda. He draws from his own experience, that of other international colleagues, the leadership literature, and from the Scriptures. The first part of the book focuses on the soft skills that help to continuously fuel the healthy development of the leader’s spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional foundations. The second part focuses on the skills that drive organizational effectiveness and contribute to healthier cultures. Each chapter includes "The Chapter Idea" summary and a practical application: "Putting the Idea to Work." The essential idea of the book is this: As readers develop their soft skill competencies, including the skills, behaviors, practices, and disciplines presented in The Softer Side of Leadership, and combine them with their hard skill competencies, they will be better equipped to be more effective as leaders which will likely result in both healthier personal lives and healthier organizations.
Download or read book Hit Refresh written by Satya Nadella and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “At the core, Hit Refresh, is about us humans and the unique quality we call empathy, which will become ever more valuable in a world where the torrent of technology will disrupt the status quo like never before.” – Satya Nadella from Hit Refresh “Satya has charted a course for making the most of the opportunities created by technology while also facing up to the hard questions.” – Bill Gates from the Foreword of Hit Refresh The New York Times bestseller Hit Refresh is about individual change, about the transformation happening inside of Microsoft and the technology that will soon impact all of our lives—the arrival of the most exciting and disruptive wave of technology humankind has experienced: artificial intelligence, mixed reality, and quantum computing. It’s about how people, organizations, and societies can and must transform and “hit refresh” in their persistent quest for new energy, new ideas, and continued relevance and renewal. Microsoft’s CEO tells the inside story of the company’s continuing transformation, tracing his own personal journey from a childhood in India to leading some of the most significant technological changes in the digital era. Satya Nadella explores a fascinating childhood before immigrating to the U.S. and how he learned to lead along the way. He then shares his meditations as a sitting CEO—one who is mostly unknown following the brainy Bill Gates and energetic Steve Ballmer. He tells the inside story of how a company rediscovered its soul—transforming everything from culture to their fiercely competitive landscape and industry partnerships. As much a humanist as engineer and executive, Nadella concludes with his vision for the coming wave of technology and by exploring the potential impact to society and delivering call to action for world leaders. “Ideas excite me,” Nadella explains. “Empathy grounds and centers me.” Hit Refresh is a set of reflections, meditations, and recommendations presented as algorithms from a principled, deliberative leader searching for improvement—for himself, for a storied company, and for society.

Book Synopsis The Spirit of Leadership by : Harrison Owen
Download or read book The Spirit of Leadership written by Harrison Owen and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 1999-03-26 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The business world is desperate for leaders. Books and courses on leadership flood the market as companies search in vain for that one person who can make sense of their rapidly changing environment through assertiveness, charisma, and control. According to noted consultant Harrison Owen, our inability to locate such a person isn't the fault of our leaders, it's the fault of our expectations. In today's world where chaos is "normal" and paradoxes can't be resolved, such old-style leaders no longer offer the solution. Today's world requires inspired leadership from all levels of the organization. "Inspired leadership" literally means in-spirited leadership, and this book explores the intimate connection between spirit and leadership it implies. It presents the radical notion that spirit is the most important ingredient of any organization and that leadership means opening space for that spirit to show up in powerful and productive ways. The Spirit of Leadership lays out the New Rules of Leadership, rules which surprisingly turnOl organizations have always played by. For the keys to these new rules, the book turns to those who have always successfully operated apart from the levers of formal power and authority-women. Offering lessons from effective female strategies, it reveals the true functions of leadership: to evoke, grow, sustain, comfort, and raise the spirit. Not to be confused with morale building, motivational techniques, or even the current fad of spirituality in business, The Spirit of Leadership digs deeper to show that, at its essence, leadership is our link to deep inner forces. It provides practical steps readers can use to uncover their own capacity for leadership in whatever position they find themselves, and to exercise that capacity both to enhance the performance of their organizations and to find their own fulfillment as complete human beings.
Book Synopsis The Techniques of Inner Leadership by : Gilbert W. Fairholm
Download or read book The Techniques of Inner Leadership written by Gilbert W. Fairholm and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-10-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership is fundamentally different from management, but traditional leadership skills were based on an ill-fitting, management-oriented model. When leadership is recognized as a discrete professional specialty, new techniques and methods are needed to operationalize the new values-based theories. In addition to distinguishing leadership from management, this book distinguishes inner leadership, practiced by those in the middle ranks, from leadership as practiced by the CEO. Inner leadership is an applied complex of specialized knowledge, theory, skills, attitudes, and attributes used to make things happen in the lives and behavior of other community members. The leader's goal is to cause followers to accept the leader's values—e.g., his or her standards of what are acceptable goals, behavior, and overall conduct—as their own. It is an intimate, personal, life-transforming task that resolves itself into a set of discrete techniques—sets of attitudes, actions, and intentions—that distinguish leaders from managers or other corporate workers. The special focus of the 21 leadership techniques presented here is on those unique methods of group interaction that characterize leadership activities in the middle of the corporation. These techniques represent a substantial body of inner leadership practice that differentiates leadership from all other group roles and functions.
Book Synopsis The American Soul by : Jacob Needleman
Download or read book The American Soul written by Jacob Needleman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2003-06-02 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at the lives of America's founders-including Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin-scholar and bestselling author Jacob Needleman explores their core of inner beliefs; their religious and spiritual sensibilities; and their individual conception of the purpose of life. The founders, Needleman argues, conceived of an "inner democracy": a continual pursuit of wisdom and self-improvement that would undergird the outer democracy in which we live today. Any understanding of America as a nation of spiritual values will in the years ahead require Needleman's work as a point of reference.
Book Synopsis Enterprise as a Carrier of Culture by : Hirochika Nakamaki
Download or read book Enterprise as a Carrier of Culture written by Hirochika Nakamaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book expands anthropological studies of business enterprise to include comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. A number of books on business anthropology have been published, but most of them are written by anthropologists alone. By contrast, this book engages interdisciplinary studies, e.g., not only by anthropologists but also management scholars and other social scientists. It is the second volume of studies forwarding anthropological approaches to business administration, Keiei Jinruigaku. This volume focusses on the cultural dimensions of enterprise. Here enterprise is viewed as a medium carrying culture, rather than solely an entity of production and management, as is typical in mainstream studies. The approach is based on Tadao Umesao’s definition of culture as a projection of instruments/devices and institutions into the mental/spiritual dimensions of life. Therefore, in our view production and management are among the projections of the cultural aspects of enterprise. This perspective, we believe, constitutes a new frontier in the study of business administration. This book consists of three parts, the first being “religiosity and spirituality”, the second “exhibitions, performance and inducement,” and the third “history and story.” In Part I, Quaker Codes, ex-votos, and spiritual leadership are discussed in relation to management and behavior, and miracles and pilgrimage. Part II describes exhibitions justifying nuclear power industry within power plants in both Japan and England, the exhibition by English families of their porcelain collections, and the performance skills of orchestral maestros. All of these examples indicate that, through the use of narratives and myths, exhibits and performances overtly and covertly induce visitors or audiences to certain viewpoints and emotions. Part III offers examples of histories and stories of enterprise articulated through the branding and consumption of industrial products, and their display in enterprise museums where the essence of culture and heritage is cherished and emphasized, by and for the wider community and the enterprise itself. Conjoined as an interdisciplinary team of Western and Japanese researchers, we apply an anthropological approach to the cultural history of enterprise in both Britain and Japan.
