Download or read book Rediscovering Europe in the Netherlands written by and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, the Dutch referendum on whether to ratify the treaty establishing a European constitution dramatically exposed the rift between political and public opinion in European policymaking. Additionally, the referendum demonstrated that politicians had failed to function as adequate links between Europe as an entity and its Dutch citizens. Against this turbulent background, the authors analyze the European Union’s relative lack of legitimacy in the Netherlands and advise how its image might earn more popular appeal by going beyond traditional institutional approaches.
Book Synopsis Rediscovering Objects from Islamic Lands in Enlightenment Europe by : Isabelle Dolezalek
Download or read book Rediscovering Objects from Islamic Lands in Enlightenment Europe written by Isabelle Dolezalek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the provenance of early modern and medieval objects from Islamic lands was largely forgotten until the "long" eighteenth century, when the first efforts were made to reconnect them with the historical contexts in which they were produced. For the first time, these Islamicate objects were read, studied and classified – and given a new place in history. Freed by scientific interest, they were used in new ways and found new homes, including in museums. More generally, the process of "rediscovery" opened up the prehistory of the discipline of Islamic art history and had a significant impact on conceptions of cultural boundaries, differences and identity. The book will be of interest to scholars working in the history of art, the art of the Islamic world, early modern history and art historiography.

Download or read book In Search of Pre-Classical Antiquity: Rediscovering Ancient Peoples in Mediterranean Europe (19th and 20th c.) written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims rethinking the cultural history of Mediterranean nationalisms between 19th and 20th centuries by tracing their specific approach to antiquity in the forging of a national past. By focusing on how national imaginaries dealt with this topic and how history and archaeology relied on antiquity, this collection of essays introduces a comparative approach presenting several cases studies concerning many regions including Spain, Italy and Slovenia as well as Albania, Greece and Turkey. By adopting the perspective of a dialogue among all these Mediterranean political cultures, this book breaks significantly new ground, because it shifts attention on how Southern Europe nationalisms are an interconnected political and cultural experience, directly related to the intellectual examples of Northern Europe, but also developing its own particular trends. Contributors are: Çiğdem Atakuman, Filippo Carlà, Francisco Garcia Alonso, Maja Gori, Eleni Stefanou, Rok Stergar, Katia Visconti.

Book Synopsis Rediscovering the Path to Europe by : Emmanuel Macron
Download or read book Rediscovering the Path to Europe written by Emmanuel Macron and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's an open secret that Europe has become something boring, if not burdensome, which makes the appearance of Em. Macron even more special and impressive. Macron has a vision, his vision is born out of love for Europe and makes Europe desirable. He is the right man in the right time, a voice that must be heard by anyone interested in a project that transforms global politics and changes the world. This book, offered at cost price, presents two most important of Macron's texts, his speech in Athens Acropolis and his speech in Paris Sorbonne, where his vision for Europe is explained for the first time in such concrete and strong terms. Macron's proposal is simple, consistent, convincing. Apart from its culture Europe doesn't have a meaning and is of no interest to us - but culture belongs to languages and needs the nations. EU has a future only to the extent that each nation is free and strong in the union more than alone. At least in modernity this cannot be achieved in a multi-national scheme, if citizens are not involved directly in the shaping of their union, not only by selecting representatives, but with a greater dedication, knowledge and responsibility. Book Synopsis The Well of Remembrance by : Ralph Metzner
Download or read book The Well of Remembrance written by Ralph Metzner and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2001-05-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his introduction to The Well of Remembrance, author Ralph Metzner provides a telling explanation of the theme of his work: "This book explores some of the mythic roots of the Western worldview, the worldview of the culture that, for better and worse, has come to dominate most of the rest of the world's peoples. This domination has involved not only economic and political systems but also values, basic attitudes, religious beliefs, language, scientific understanding, and technological applications. Many individuals, tribes, and nations are struggling to free themselves from the residues of the ideological oppression practiced by what they see as Eurocentric culture. They seek to define their own ethnic or national identities by referring to ancestral traditions and mythic patterns of knowledge. At this time, it seems appropriate for Europeans and Euro-Americans likewise to probe their own ancestral mythology for insight and self-understanding." Focusing on the mythology and worldview of the pre-Christian Germanic tribes of Northern Europe, Metzner offers a meaningful exploration of Western ancestry.

This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolutionary philosophy for rookie and veteran travelers alike, Rediscovering Travel “gets to the heart of why we travel” (Matt Kepnes, “Nomadic Matt”). Having captivated millions during his tenure as the New York Times’s “Frugal Traveler,” Seth Kugel is one of our most internationally beloved travel writers. With the initial publication of Rediscovering Travel, he took the corporate modern travel industry to task, determined to reignite an age- old sense of adventure that has virtually been vanquished by the spontaneity- obliterating likes of Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and Starwood points. Now in travel- friendly paperback, this “funny, inspiring and well- crafted” companion (Associated Press) reveals how to make the most of new apps and other digital technologies without being shackled to them. Writing for the tight- belted tourists and the fi rst- class fl yer, the eager student and the comfort- seeking retiree, Kugel shows all readers “not only where to look, but how” (Samantha Brown), and promises that we too can rediscover the joy of discovery. “Travel is not about the destination but the experience. . . . That’s what makes [it] so appealing, so addictive, and that’s what makes Rediscovering Travel so necessary.” — Peter Greenberg

Book Synopsis Rediscovering the Islamic Classics by : Ahmed El Shamsy
Download or read book Rediscovering the Islamic Classics written by Ahmed El Shamsy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of how Arab editors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries revolutionized Islamic literature Islamic book culture dates back to late antiquity, when Muslim scholars began to write down their doctrines on parchment, papyrus, and paper and then to compose increasingly elaborate analyses of, and commentaries on, these ideas. Movable type was adopted in the Middle East only in the early nineteenth century, and it wasn't until the second half of the century that the first works of classical Islamic religious scholarship were printed there. But from that moment on, Ahmed El Shamsy reveals, the technology of print transformed Islamic scholarship and Arabic literature. In the first wide-ranging account of the effects of print and the publishing industry on Islamic scholarship, El Shamsy tells the fascinating story of how a small group of editors and intellectuals brought forgotten works of Islamic literature into print and defined what became the classical canon of Islamic thought. Through the lens of the literary culture of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Arab cities—especially Cairo, a hot spot of the nascent publishing business—he explores the contributions of these individuals, who included some of the most important thinkers of the time. Through their efforts to find and publish classical literature, El Shamsy shows, many nearly lost works were recovered, disseminated, and harnessed for agendas of linguistic, ethical, and religious reform. Bringing to light the agents and events of the Islamic print revolution, Rediscovering the Islamic Classics is an absorbing examination of the central role printing and its advocates played in the intellectual history of the modern Arab world.
