Book excerpt: Prejudice against gay men and lesbians continues to fuel negative attitudes that are perpetuated by stereotypes and by validation from those within one's own social group. Using Allport's contact theory and general attitude theory as the theoretical foundation, this quasi-experimental, repeated measures quantitative study explored the influence of contact on attitudes towards gay men and lesbians. Participants were placed into one of three treatment conditions: control, video only and video plus contact and interaction with gay and lesbian individuals. The sample included 106 undergraduate students from a Midwest community college. Students in all conditions completed the Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men scale prior to treatment, immediately following the treatment, and again one week later. Repeated measures analysis of covariance for trend analysis and multivariate analysis of covariance using change scores were used to test the impact of the treatment on attitudes; gender was included as a second main effect. Results indicated that contact and interaction did have an effect on the decreasing negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men, as reflected in the change scores of the video plus contact group compared with the change scores of the control group. However, attitude change scores for the video only and the video plus contact and interaction groups were not statistically different. Change score analysis suggested that the interaction component may have been more important for males. The implications for positive social change include decreasing negative attitudes in group settings such as schools and workplace settings and thus creating more affirming environments for gay and lesbian people.

Specifically, researchers have found a consistent correlation between knowing someone gay and lower scores on measures of homophobic attitudes. Herek and Glunt (1993) have reported significant correlations between types (intimate friendship vs. acquaintance) of contact with a gay person and homophobia, but have yet to develop a comprehensive tool with which to measure gay and lesbian contact. Television media exposure has also been highly correlated with a number of prejudicial attitudes (e.g., Montgomery, 1989). However there have been no studies to date examining television's effects on homophobic attitudes. This research project developed a grant proposal to design a study to examine the relationship between Interpersonal Contact, Media Exposure, and Homophobic attitudes among heterosexual participants. Financial support will be sought from the Wayne F. Placek Small Grant Award. The proposed research will utilize a newly developed comprehensive survey, the Contact/Exposure to Lesbians and Gays Scale (CELG), which will operationalize and measure amount of contact with lesbians or gay men, levels of intimacy of this contact, and amount of television exposure to gay and lesbian content. Participants will receive CELG Total Contact and Total Exposure scores and will also be grouped into one of four levels of interpersonal contact intimacy. A number of ANOVAs will be completed with CELG scores as independent variables, and scores on a measure of homophobia (ATLG) as the dependent variable. Additionally, statistics will be performed to examine whether Contact and Exposure exert a moderating effect on homophobic attitudes among groups known to express high levels of homophobia.

Through longitudinal research that follows students who have been so labeled over all their college years, we can begin to find answers to these questions. Time to Know Them is the first book that follows the experiences of a group of students over their entire academic experience. No previous studies have brought together the factors incorporated in this study: *examining writing and learning on a true longitudinal basis; *studying a multicultural urban population; *investigating the relationship between writing and learning by examining papers written over time for regularly assigned academic courses across a range of disciplines; and *taking into consideration non-academic factors that influence academic performance such as race, gender, socio-economic status, and ideological orientation. Through interviews twice a semester over six years, the collection of papers written for all courses, observations of instructional settings, and analysis of required institutional tests of writing, the author has been able to pull together a more complete picture of writing and intellectual development over the college years than has previously been available in any study. Students are seen to acquire the ability to handle more complex reasoning tasks as they find themselves in more challenging intellectual settings and where risk-taking and exploration of new ideas are valued. The integration of students' previous life experiences into their academic studies allows them to analyze, critique, modify, and apply their previously held world views to their new learning. These changes are seen to occur over time with instructional settings and support providing key roles in writing development. Personal factors in students' lives present difficulties that require persistence and dedication to overcome. Never before have the complexities of real individual lives as they affect academic performance been so clearly presented.
