In 1937, the family moved east to the small town of Bronxville near New York City, when Reverend Arthur Doege became president of Concordia Collegiate Institute, a small, Lutheran Church-affiliated high school and junior college. Attending Bronxville High School and then receiving a scholarship to Oberlin College, Ted graduated in 1950 and briefly was a Burlington Railroad section hand. Drafted into the Army in late 1952, he became a parachutist, after discharge enrolling as a medical student at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. In 1957, Ted married medical school classmate, Ann Elizabeth Edmondson, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. At the University of Rochester, Ted also received training as a pathology Fellow. From 1958 to 1967 he held positions at the Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta and the University of Washington, Seattle. In 1967, Doctor Doege was appointed Visiting Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai, Thailand, after which he returned in 1970 as an associate professor in the College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago. From 1977 until he retired in January, 1996, Doctor Doege directed or advised an American Medical Association science group responsible for environmental, public, and occupational health issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get a taste of Texas culinary history with this quirky, diverse community cookbook from Austin’s nineteenth-century residents, plus photos and informative essays. Tacos and barbecue command appetites today, but early Austinites indulged in peppered mangoes, roast partridge, and cucumber catsup. Those are just a few of the fascinating historic recipes in this new edition of the first cookbook published in the city. Written by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1891, Our Home Cookbook aimed to “cause frowns to dispel and dimple into ripples of laughter” with myriad “receipts” from the early Austin community. From dandy pudding to home remedies “worth knowing,” these are hearty helpings featuring local game and diverse heritage, including German, Czech and Mexican. With informative essays and a cookbook bibliography, city archivist Mike Miller and the Austin History Center present this curious collection that's sure to raise eyebrows, if not cravings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veteran gardener and author Judy Barrett’s book dispels the idea that growing plants we can eat is harder than growing plants we can’t eat and introduces readers to the idea of placing plants that can produce in an ordinary landscape, a harvest of herbs, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Whether buying a few tomato plants for a patio container or exploring the idea of a frontyard or kitchen plot, incorporating plants that “bear food” into the landscape has real appeal, even to weekend gardeners. For the more ambitious, Barrett offers a primer on the various kinds of garden beds that are easy to create and maintain. For those without the space to garden themselves, she describes where and how one can buy the bounty produced by others in farmers markets, farm stands, and pick-your-own operations. Finally, Barrett invites readers to enjoy the camaraderie and learning opportunities available at community, neighborhood, and schoolyard gardens.

Book excerpt: Every woman in the pew has a story of God's faithfulness, and women love nothing better than to revel in one another's experiences and celebrate the sisterhood of believers. Pew Sisters helps get that celebration started. Devotional in both tone and form, this twelve-session study tells what God is doing in the lives of real women today. From depression to grief to cancer, women from all over the Church share their stories here for the consolation and encouragement of their sisters in faith. We are all one in the Body of Christ, so these beautiful women are your pew sisters. Their joys are your joys, and their sorrows are your sorrows. They share the same faith as you, eat at the same table as you, and inherit the same paradise as you. Join them in the pages of this study and in your own small group. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fritz and Annie Lippe Family--German Cotton Farmers in Early 1900s Texas describes the childhood of Fritz and Annie beside the Brazos River in east Texas, their families' move west, their courtship and marriage, and the rearing of their eleven children on rented farms. In some years, the cotton crop was profitable. In other years, drought, boll weevils, or floods destroyed the crop. The children missed the first few weeks of school in the fall because picking the cotton took priority over education. The family raised most of their own food--vegetables from the garden; hogs for meat, lard, and soap; cattle for meat, milk and butter; and chickens for meat and eggs. They grew corn, grinding it into cornmeal to make bread. Money from the cotton sale was used to buy the few items that were not made or grown, such as coffee, sugar, and farm tools. Their many narrow escapes from death due to accidents, injuries, and illnesses are described here. It is amazing that all of the children lived to adulthood. Annie almost died after giving birth to one of the younger children, but she recovered and lived to the age of 103. Every Lippe son and son-in-law served in the military, some of them during World War II, some in combat. All returned safely. Several grandchildren and their spouses also served. Eight of the eleven children and the wives of two deceased sons contributed photographs and stories of life on the family farms. The author inherited many letters and photos from her mother, who was Fritz and Annie's eldest daughter. The book also contains stories of Fritz and Annie's children as adults. They all became hardworking solid citizens and remained true to the faith in God instilled in them by their parents.
