Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whiteness and Social Change provides a comparative engagement with whiteness – the unearned and at times unmarked social-structural privilege afforded to some at the expense of others – in contemporary Australia and Canada. Through a detailed examination of high profile community campaigns at Sandon Point (New South Wales, Australia) and the Red Hill Creek valley (Ontario, Canada) – situated alongside an analysis of white interpretations of the 1966 Wave Hill walkout (Northern Territory, Australia) – the actions of broader communities supporting First Peoples struggles expose whiteness as manifesting itself irrespective of intent. Existing scholarship in sociology, science studies, political theory and critical whiteness studies are drawn on to identify means through which whiteness can be destabilised. The outcome is an identification of how collaborative struggle and the politics of experience produce moments of cognitive dissonance amongst white supporters. These moments are transformative, lay foundations for respect and recognition, and the move towards a fair and just society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pinot noir, the famously elegant, sexy, and capricious red grape of Burgundy, is finally producing impressive wines in North America. Credit talented winemakers, enthusiastic restaurateurs, and consumers in search of alternatives to cabernet and zinfandel. Considered perhaps the ultimate food wine, pinot noir has an allure based on its special combination of aromas, flavors, and mouthfeel; on its legendary capacity to reflect the terroir where it is grown; and on its reputation for being hard to grow and make. This is the definitive work on pinot noir in North America. A comprehensive reference for winemakers and aficionados as well as a sourcebook for casual enthusiasts, it includes extensive historical and viticultural background on pinot noir in the New World and profiles of six dozen prominent producers in California, Oregon, British Columbia, and New York. John Winthrop Haeger, known for his perceptive wine writing for more than fifteen years, gives contextual and comparative information about pinot noir in Burgundy and then tells the story of wine producers' early failures, frustrations, and breakthroughs in North America. He discusses plant genetics and clones, identifies the essential conditions for really good pinot, tells where the best wines are grown and made, and analyzes the factors that determine wine styles and signatures. In the second part of the book, he presents detailed producer profiles with accessibly written tasting notes on recent and mature vintages. A final section covers glassware, vintages, wine and food pairings, and other matters of interest to consumers. Maps prepared especially for this book cover all the major pinot-producing regions in North America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution of the Alabama Agroecosystem describes aspects of food and fiber production from prehistoric to modern times. Using information and perspectives from both the "hard" sciences (geology, biology) and the "soft" science (sociology, history, economics, politics), it traces agriculture's evolution from its appearance in the Old World to its establishment in the New World. It discusses how agricultural practices originating in Europe, Asia and Africa determined the path agriculture followed as it developed in the Americas. The book focuses on changes in US and Alabama agriculture since the early nineteenth century and the effects that increased government involvement have had on the country's agricultural development. Material presented explains why agriculture in Alabama and much of the South remains only marginally competitive compared to many other states, the role that limited agricultural competitiveness played in the slower rate of economic development in the South in general, and how those limiting factors ensure that agricultural development in Alabama and the South will continue to keep up but never catch up.

Book excerpt: Environmental Impact Assessment: Participation and Practice provides and essential introduction to the evolution and practice of environmental impact assessment in a Canadian context. The Canadian setting is particularly representative of the lasting influence of EIA the diversity of issuesEIA processes now address, and the more complex definition of environment that many public agencies must now consider. The federal and provincal governments in Canada each have their own EIA system, and as the later chapters in this book illustrate, despite some commonalities of these systems, theycan vary substantially in what they cover and to whom they apply. Before exploring the detailed discussions of process and application, and the jurisdictional case studies, a brief review of the context and basic process of environmental impact assessment is covered in chapter one. The succeeding chapters provide detailed explorations of process, the evolution ofCanadian EIA, analyses of methods and approaches, case studies, and illustrations of EIA as practiced by Canada's provincal and federal governments.

It begins with three chapters that provide a background to the physical nature and evolution of the Western Australian coast and its 2,051 mainland beach systems. Chapter one covers the geological evolution of the coast and the role climate, wave, tides and wind in shaping the present coast and beaches. Chapter two presents in more detail the 16 types of beach systems that occur along the Western Australian coast, and chapter three discusses the types of beach hazards along the coast and the role of Surf Lifesaving Western Australia in mitigating these hazards. Chapter four presents a description of each of the 2,051 mainland beaches, as well as 63 beaches on Rottnest Island. The description of each beach includes its name, location, physical characteristics, access and facilities, with specific comments on its surf zone character and physical hazards, and its suitability for swimming, surfing and fishing. Based on the physical hazards, all beaches are rated in terms of public safety and scaled from 1 (least hazardous) to 10 (most hazardous).

This book was released on 2009-01-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Racial Politics of Bodies, Nations and Knowledges takes on the urgent task of chipping away at existing racial and ethnic hierarchies that obstruct global and local movement towards human rights and social justice. It imagines subjective, social and political spaces which might enable this movement. Many authors engage with Indigenous sovereignties, from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives. While most authors write from an Australian perspective, the issues addressed both have relevance beyond antipodean borders and complicate the idea of national boundaries. Chapters include a comparison of Indigenous struggles for land in Canada and Australia, the situation of minority ethnic and religious communities in the European Union, a meditation on teaching an Australian film about colonial history to German university students, and the story of the delicate positioning of a man of mixed Maori and Irish heritage finding cultural citizenship in the US academy in the mid 20th century. Other chapters focus on children’s storybooks, media representations of suffering, and websites aimed at gay and lesbian youth – all international phenomena, and all places where racialised politics are at play. The book also offers insights into contemporary Australian racial politics via analyses of the treatment of asylum seekers, the health of Indigenous women, the education of young Indigenous people and the development of national histories in local tourist promotion. Readers looking for international perspectives on racial issues will find this book a diverse but rewarding approach to vitally important subject matter.
