Book Synopsis Verification of Red Flag Warnings Across the Northwestern U.S. as Forecasts of Large Fire Occurrence by : Joshua M. Clark
Download or read book Verification of Red Flag Warnings Across the Northwestern U.S. as Forecasts of Large Fire Occurrence written by Joshua M. Clark and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Red Flag Warnings (RFWs) issued by the National Weather Service in the United States (U.S.) are an important fire early warning system based on forecasts of critical fire weather that foster fire activity including the occurrence of large fires. However, verification of RFWs as they relate to fire activity is lacking, thereby limiting means to improve forecasts as well as increase value for end-users. We evaluated the efficacy of RFWs as forecasts of large fire occurrence for the Northwestern U.S and found favorable performance broadly across the area, along with substantial skill and improvement over reference forecasts. We further demonstrate that the skill of RFWs is significantly higher for lightning-ignited large fires and for forecasts issued during periods of high fuel dryness. The results of this first verification study of RFWs lay the groundwork for future efforts towards improving the relevance and usefulness of RFWs to better serve the fire community and public.

Book excerpt: Sure, he's gorgeous, funny, and charming—but early in any doomed relationship there are warning signals foretelling the bad news to come. Studies show that most women will try to justify these signs, excusing them so they don't interfere with their fantasy of having met the perfect man. Unfortunately, such signs are usually all too prophetic—they are the essence of what Gary Aumiller and Daniel Goldfarb call "Red Flags." The question then becomes how to detect and respond to a Red Flag before it's too late. This first-of-its-kind book will help readers determine a man's all-important "loser potential" within the first three dates. Each chapter includes a profile of a different loser, a post-date quiz to help you determine if Mr. Right is Mr. Wrong, and important information about the best way to break up with him. Red Flags has all the fun of a magazine quiz combined with the expertise of psychologists who specialize in the techniques used by the police to profile criminals. They know how to spot the rejects—and now you will, too!

Book Synopsis The Complementary Therapist's Guide to Red Flags and Referrals by : Clare Stephenson
Download or read book The Complementary Therapist's Guide to Red Flags and Referrals written by Clare Stephenson and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique ready reference for all complementary medicine, massage therapy and manual therapy practitioners and students alerting them to ‘red flag’ symptoms which should be referred for Western medical investigation or emergency medical treatment. When can a patient be safely reassured and when do they need further investigation or treatment? ‘Red flags’ are clinical signs that suggest a patient needs prompt investigation and treatment for a potentially dangerous situation. Therapists increasingly find themselves working alongside conventionally trained doctors and nurses and it is vital for them to understand conventional medical diagnoses, symptoms and treatments and, crucially, to recognise warning signs of serious disease. This is essential in order to be a safe practitioner. Clare Stephenson’s The Complementary Therapist’s Guide to Red Flags and Referrals meets this need by providing an easily accessible reference to ‘red flag’ symptoms, designed especially for therapists. It offers guidance on how best to respond to those symptoms and signs of disease which can be readily discerned through routine history taking and basic examination of the body. The guidance is in language which is accessible to therapists, and clear advice is offered on when to refer patients to conventional medicine practitioners and how to communicate with doctors when making a referral. Clinical syndromes which merit rapid response are summarised for ease of reference.
