And now and then someone took pity and befriended me, and was there when I tried to talk. But for years after I would still awake screaming in the night, terrified, thousands of miles away, dreaming it over and over " David Johnson is a young man on the run. Behind him lies the wreckage of a broken childhood and a broken home. The memory of beatings that never end. The piercing hatred in his mother's eyes. Behind David Johnson lies a past as harsh and vivid as an open wound-a dream that becomes a nightmare from which he may not wake. Boston. Paris. New York. New Orleans. Hobbs, New Mexico. San Francisco and L.A. There is no pattern to David Johnson's flight, and no direction. What friends he makes along the way he quickly loses. The jobs he has are meaningless. His future is as empty and as threatening as his past. And then comes the day when David Johnson discovers he can run no further-that the nightmare of his life is not a dream at all. The story of David's descent into madness and the brutally affirmative beginnings of his struggle up again is an extraordinary reading experience. The voice of the narrator is the voice of one who has known the pain of which he writes-and savored the triumph of his survival. By his candor and art, he makes that pain and triumph ours.

Book excerpt: Enter the dimly-lit passageway of time and learn surprising contradictions to previously-published historical accounts of the last days of Black Beard the pirate. Author Kevin Duffus discloses new information about how Black Beard was cornered and attacked at Ocracoke in 1718, why he tried to escape rather than to fight back, and how his life might have been spared had he lived for three more weeks. He reveals the true meaning of a mysterious letter found in Black Beard’s possessions, and explores the possibilities of government conspiracies and coverups. New research finds that many of the 25 pirates who remained with Black Beard after the wreck of the Queen Anne’s Revenge were sons of North Carolina families. And for the first time, Duffus proves that most of Black Beard’s captured crew members were not hanged in Virginia, and that one of them—10 years after purportedly being executed—became a respected and wealthy landowner and the grandfather of heroes of the American Revolution. For the first time, Duffus exposes the truth behind many of the enduring Blackbeard myths—his Bristol, England, birthplace; his 14 wives, including Mary Ormond; the burning of fuses in his hair to frighten his victims; and the countless tall tales of buried treasure, secret tunnels, and the shocking origins of the legend of his silver-plated skull used as a drinking cup by a secret society. In addition to dozens of new discoveries one revelation promises to stand-out as the most amazing. With the help of groundbreaking research by three courageous genealogists, Kevin Duffus shares long-forgotten clues to the potential identity of Black Beard, beginning with a long-held myth about his sister, Susannah—and the conclusions are staggering and certain to be controversial. Also featured within the pages of The Last Days of Black Beard the Pirate are more than 75 photographs and a dozen meticulously researched and crafted maps which support this remarkable story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the complete life story of Pirate Barbarossa or Khaireddine Barbarous, who dictated it to his colleague and friend in the sea life the poet and writer Syed Ali Almuradi. He recorded his autobiography after a request of Sultan Soleiman Alkanuni, known as Suleiman the Magnificent. The individual is the son of his surrounding. What means this proverb? That means his environmental factors and circumstances influence directly and indirectly his thoughts and behaviors along with his life. The fifteenth and sixteenth centuries extended the culture of Piracy, which had been developed worldwide centuries earlier in the Indian ocean, the Atlantic, and the Mediterranean. Piracy was considered as the standard, the norm, and the normal of that age. It was a source of enrichment for ordinary people and for countries. It was practiced by countries implicitly, so many pirates worked for the service of empires. Barbarossa and his brother Arruj were not the exceptions. They were raised in this realm and atmosphere. It wasn't immoral to exercise piracy. Something is clear is that they engaged in piracy after they were regular traders with their ships and after the incarceration and the torture of Arruj the Barbarossa's oldest brother by the Rhodes Knights on his way to Tripoli in Lebanon. Barbarossa, an Italian term meaning the Red Beard. Mostly the Venetians in the fifteenth century who called Khaireddine Basha or Kheder with this name. Barbarossa or Khaireddine was born on Midilli island (Lesbos today) in 1478. He died in Istanbul in 1546. At a fresh age, he uses the ship as we operate in our days, the cars and all the transportations means. With time, the sea became truly his proper home. A natural person can work outside throughout the day and return at the end of the day to his home to take a rest. Barbarossa took this rest in his ship's private cabinet in the sea's large everywhere. Through this autobiography, Barbarossa talked about all the events that he lives, saw, or testified about by himself. The spiritual background was dominant in his stories as the antagonists of the Ottoman empire in an aside; the Venice, the Spanish and the Portuguese empires on another side each side represents a theology and his followers the Ottoman empire represents Islam, the Spaniards, the Portuguese and the Venetians represents the Christianity. Using words like Kaffer or kuffar, which means unbelievers or infidels, was frequent. Despite his strong heart as an adventurer in true life not like in Hollywood movies, I discovered he possesses a highly sensitive soul when the matter concerns his brother Arruj, his siblings, his men, and the poor that he tried consistently to help them everywhere. Barbarossa never spoke about his mom, his teaching, and his childhood. For example, he didn't reveal that his mommy was a priest's widow before she married his father. He didn't mention that besides the military employment of his father; he was working on pottery and when they started in trading he and his brother Arruj; they sold the pottery of their father outside the Midilli island. Their brother, Isaaq, preferred administrative job, he didn't specify it too. Barbarossa and his brother Arruj rescued the lives of tens of thousands of Muslims and Jews escaping from the tyranny and the torture of The Spanish Church and transferring them to North Africa and Greece in Salonica. This autobiography reflects all the cultures, values, morals, and behaviors of all people surviving at that time.
