Les VIV peuvent atteindre des amplitudes significatives lorsque la fréquence du détachement tourbillonnaire est proche d'une des fréquences propres de la dynamique du solide, et constituent donc un mécanisme d'interactions fluide/structure intéressant pour extraire de l'énergie d'un écoulement. Les VIV de structures flexibles sont par conséquent analysées dans cette thèse à la fois numériquement, grâce au concept d'oscillateur de sillage, et expérimentalement. Nous démontrons ainsi qu'il est possible d'extraire efficacement de l'énergie d'un écoulement grâce aux VIV d'un câble. Nous prouvons également que la flexibilité de la structure lui permet d'adapter sa dynamique aux sollicitations fluctuantes du sillage pour extraire efficacement de l'énergie de l'écoulement, grâce à (i) l'excitation de ses différents modes de vibrations, dans le cas d'un câble tendu équipé de récupérateurs d'énergie périodiquement distribués, chapitre 2, ou (ii) l'apparition d'ondes progressives de VIV transportant l'énergie lorsque l'on considère un câble suspendu par un unique récupérateur d'énergie, chapitre 3.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. A smooth steel glove was mounted on the first stage delta wing of Orbital Sciences Corporation's Pegasus® launch vehicle and was flown at speeds of up to Mach 8 and altitudes of up to 250,000 ft. The wing-glove experiment was flown as a secondary payload off the coast of Florida in October 1998. This paper describes the measurement system developed. Samples of the results obtained for different parts of the trajectory are included to show the characteristics and quality of the data. Thermocouples and pressure sensors (including Preston tubes, Stanton tubes, and a "probeless" pressure rake showing boundary layer profiles) measured the time-averaged flow. Surface hot-films and high-frequency pressure transducers measured flow dynamics. Because the vehicle was not recoverable, it was necessary to design a system for real-time onboard processing and transmission. Onboard processing included spectral averaging. The quality and consistency of data obtained was good and met the experiment requirements.
