The need to understand what motivates students to continue to persist with their music participation is predicated on the idea that secondary music ensembles may not be meeting the needs of today’s learners (Albert, 2006). By not meeting the needs of today’s learners, secondary music ensembles face the possibility of diminishing or disappearing entirely. This paper includes a detailed description of existing literature which addresses this very problem, starting with early childhood musical experiences to existing barriers in music education. It also includes information from practitioner articles and a synthesis of the described research.

Book excerpt: Music educators at the secondary level are faced with many challenges when trying to recruit students for instrumental or choral programs. Recent studies have looked at recruitment challenges including socioeconomic issues, parental involvement, intellectual competency, music aptitude and extra-curricular activities. Most students' music career does not start when they enroll in beginning band or choral ensembles, as they may have been exposed to music classes as early as kindergarten. General music teachers have the task of introducing students to singing, playing a variety of instruments and creating compositions. With this early exposure to music and the methods used by the general music teacher, students can begin to create their own music preferences, which may influence their choice of ensembles at the secondary level. This thesis looks at whether the methods of the general music teacher and typical activities associated with these methods are related to the numbers of students who choose band, choir or orchestra as the secondary level.

Book excerpt: This project explored research and pedagogical literature related to the recruitment and retention of students involved in school music ensembles at the secondary level. Additionally, literature regarding advocacy for school instrumental programs was reviewed. Although music courses serve an important purpose in a well-rounded education and should be made easily available to all students, there are cases in which policymakers or administrators do not prioritize the need for music education. To facilitate strong student participation in school music programs, the literature points to the benefits of music educators implementing a year round recruitment, retention, and advocacy plan. As part of this capstone project, a twelve-month plan for recruitment, retention, and advocacy was created, grounded in the research and pedagogical literature in music education. The plan outlines strategies such as frequent contact with new recruits and their parents, positive student-teacher relationships with current students, and providing culturally relevant performances that meet the community's expectations. All of the findings are applicable to strategically improving the quality and quantity of the band program in the Valley Park, Missouri school district.

Book excerpt: When the Coronavirus Pandemic made its way into the United States in 2020, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended that all schools pivot to an online learning format as the country entered a lockdown in March 2020. The Coronavirus Pandemic made it harder for music educators to retain and recruit students into their upper secondary ensemble programs. The purpose of the proposed study is to determine that it is plausible that the residual effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic had an effect on the retention and recruitment of the band, choir, and orchestra programs of the George Bush High School Music Cohort. The study's first phase was to identify the enrollment numbers of the band, choir, and orchestra programs before the Coronavirus Pandemic during the 2019 – 2020 and 2020 – 2021 academic school years. The study's second phase was to determine the 2021 – 2022 and projected 2022 – 2023 academic school year enrollment numbers during the Coronavirus Pandemic in relation to the retention and recruiting of the band, choir, and orchestra programs. The third phase surveyed the George Bush High School Music Cohort directors with questions about why students did not return to their respective band, choir, and orchestra programs. The method in which this study will be conducted is the Qualitative Phenomenological case study. The performing arts programs of the George Bush High School Music Cohort have experienced enrollment, retention, and recruitment numbers as well as the music ensemble directors’ reported anxiety/stress resulting from the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the reasons students currently participating in collegiate instrumental ensembles chose to initially join instrumental music ensembles, what they enjoyed about the experience, and why they persisted. An ex post facto design was employed to determine the effects of recruitment and retention practices within middle school, high school, and collegiate instrumental ensembles. I surveyed students currently participating in college band ensembles who had participated in middle and high school band as part of their past school musical training. A survey was developed and distributed to four instrumental music ensembles: Buckeye Philharmonic, Symphonic Band, University Band, and Marching Band. The survey focused on the reasons for initial participation, participation in middle school, high school, and college, as well as why these participants considered dropping out of their respective ensembles. Data suggests that participation or non-participation in musical ensembles were influenced by factors such as (a) music major/non-music major participation, (b) current ensemble, (c) family support, (d) social reasons and (e) competence beliefs. Findings imply that competence beliefs are fragile in the early stages, but participants, particularly music majors, may center parts of their identity around music. Music majors valued musical and social factors more than non-music majors. In addition, there were significant differences in reasons for participation based on ensemble, particularly the Buckeye Philharmonic and Marching Band.

Book excerpt: Despite the numerous research studies promoting popular music education, many school districts need to implement an ensemble that teaches popular music. On average, only 24 percent of high school students participate in an ensemble throughout their high school careers, and music educators are trying to address this through modern bands. This qualitative, postpositivist, existential-phenomenological study identifies how the implication of modern bands can increase and retain music enrollment in secondary schools and analyzes the effects on other traditional instrumental and vocal ensemble enrollments. This study examined secondary music directors’ perceptions of the impact of modern bands on traditional ensembles. To ascertain how modern bands can help increase enrollment and learn the effect on traditional ensembles, music educators with modern band programs from across the United States provided their perspectives through a qualitative survey. Additionally, music teachers were encouraged to discuss their views on how modern band affects traditional ensembles. The results of this study show that popular music may help increase enrollment in music programs without adversely impacting traditional ensembles. This research study will help music educators and district administrators understand the leverage modern band must increase music ensemble enrollment and its relationship with traditional ensembles. In addition, this research study could encourage more school districts to adopt popular music education to reach students that may have otherwise eluded the music program.

Book excerpt: This study examines recruitment and retention in Division One (D1) university marching bands, while understanding high school and university directors’ perspectives and impact on student choice. This project surveyed university band directors, seeking commonalities for recruiting and retention of instrumental students. Based on the results, universities will have better strategies on what, how, and why recruitment and retention issues should be addressed. Student enrollment is important to the well-being, development, and continuity of marching band programs. They may result in better recruitment and retention for other university ensembles, applied studios, the music department, and the university enrollment overall. This study may highlight what students need to be successful university students through participation in the university marching band.

Book excerpt: Many practical books for music educators who work with special needs students focus on students' disabilities, rather than on the inclusive classroom more generally. In Including Everyone: Creating Music Classrooms Where All Children Learn, veteran teacher and pedagogue Judith Jellison offers a new approach that identifies broader principles of inclusive music instruction writ large. As she demonstrates in this aptly-titled book, the perceived impediments to successfully including the wide diversity of children in schools in meaningful music instruction often stem not from insurmountable obstacles but from a lack of imagination. How do teachers and parents create diverse musical communities in which all children develop skills, deepen understanding, and cultivate independence in a culture of accomplishment and joy? Including Everyone equips music teachers with five principles of effective instruction for mixed special needs / traditional settings that are applicable in both classroom and rehearsal rooms alike. These five guidelines lay out Jellison's argument for a new way to teach music that shifts attention away from thinking of children in terms of symptoms. The effective teacher, argues Jellison, will strive to offer a curriculum that will not only allow the child with a disability to be more successful, but will also apply to and improve instruction for typically developing students. In this compelling new book, Judith Jellison illustrates what it takes to imagine, create, and realize possibilities for all children in ways that inspire parents, teachers, and the children themselves to take part in collaborative music making. Her book helps readers recognize how this most central component of human culture is one that allows everyone to participate, learn, and grow. Jellison is a leader in her field, and the wealth of knowledge she makes available in this book is extensive and valuable. It should aid her peers and inspire a new generation of student teachers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to examine the perceptions of private studio-based music teachers regarding recruitment and retention of students. Gaining insight and understanding into the careers of private studio-based music teachers is a way to help practicing teachers and educate students who aspire to have a similar career path. Research questions included: (a) How do students and teachers become acquainted with one another? (b) What strategies do private studio-based teachers use to attract students? (c) What factors impact the effectiveness of recruitment and retention strategies used by private studio-based music teachers? (d) Why do students choose to begin privately studying music? (e) Why do students discontinue lessons? Through the interview sequence and artifact analysis used to collect data an overall picture and a slice of reality was revealed for the reader. This picture was created in order to help those who aspire or already may be private studio-based music teachers. Ultimately, private studio-based teachers were found to rely on many factors and phenomena to help them recruit new students. Word of mouth, location, reputation, presence in schools, and performance were discovered to be common attractions to potential students. After a student began lessons the following aspects impacted the retention period: Enjoyment or fun, achievement, teaching methods, distractions, parental involvement, and the teacher's perception of retention.

Book excerpt: “Since singing is so good a thing,I wish all men would learne to sing” (William Byrd, 1588) Over the centuries, there has been reluctance among boys and men to become involved in some forms of singing. Perspectives on Males and Singing tackles this conundrum head-on as the first academic volume to bring together leading thinkers and practitioners who share their insights on the involvement of males in singing. The authors share research that analyzes the axiomatic male disinclination to sing, and give strategies designed to engage males more successfully in performing vocal music emphasizing the many positive effects it can have on their lives. Inspired by a meeting at the Australian symposium ‘Boys and Voices’, which focused on the engagement of boys in singing, the volume includes contributions from leading authorities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and Europe.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to formulate a plan for recruiting students into a beginning level band program and retaining instrumental students throughout the middle school grade levels. Instrumental music educators need to have a recruitment plan for enticing students into the band program as well as a plan to retain those students. Through the development of a thorough plan that details specific approaches and methods, music educators are able to recruit students into the instrumental program as well as retain students through the higher levels of said program. Plans based on experiences from existing programs and research may allow educators to identify students who are potentially interested in the instrumental programs, providing strategies to target all groups of students to increase participation. Teachers will benefit, and consequently better develop an ideal instrumental program, through the implementation and improvement of their recruitment and retention plan. The developed plan identified specific activities for each month and included such things as working with teachers and administrators in the elementary school, planned interactions between middle school director and elementary school students, community involvement and performance opportunities. With the implementation of a well-developed plan, music educators develop and maintain a successful comprehensive program for students to grow, develop, and foster musicianship.
