Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A British survey of employers examined the recruitment and retention of people with disabilities (PWDs). Telephone interviews were conducted with two samples of employers: a random sample of 1,250 and a sample of 250 registered users of the Employment Service's "Disability Symbol," which sets a good practice standard for the employment of PWDs. Findings indicated that more than 90 percent of employers with any disabled employees employed 5 or fewer. The two most common reasons for not having any disabled employees were that none had applied for a job or that a person with disabilities had been employed but had subsequently left. Forty-five percent of the symbol users sampled had a policy specifically addressing the employment of PWDs; only 17 percent of the random sample had a policy. There was a direct relationship between the size of establishment and the existence of written policy. Almost 71 percent of symbol users and 11 percent of the random sample were actively trying to attract applications from persons with disabilities; almost 40 percent of respondents reported difficulty in attracting such applications. People with difficulties in seeing or with mental handicaps/learning difficulties were hardest to employ. The main perceived problem related to the nature of the work. Almost all symbol users were prepared to make costless or minor changes to work environment; 84 percent were willing to pay for necessary adaptations or alterations. Eleven percent of symbol users did not seem aware of its existence. (Appendixes include the sampling design and characteristics, reanalysis of a previous survey, and questionnaire.) (YLB)

It comprises a comparative study that was conducted at international, regional and comparative country levels and that highlights critical success factors in implementing disability strategies or action plans worldwide. It explores emerging synergies between what is required to implement principles of international law contained in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and what it is possible to achieve through national policy and systems development. A number of critical success factors for implementing and monitoring strategies are identified, including leadership from government and civil society, participation of disabled people in implementation and monitoring, transparency and accountability in reporting on progress, independent monitoring and external review, and the ability to measure progress with indicators of disability equality.

Book excerpt: This report is an examination of the employment & employability of persons with disabilities in British Columbia, contrasted with projected labour force challenges & opportunities to be confronted in the province in the future. It first presents a profile of persons with disabilities, including information on educational levels, labour force activity, income, and use of disability supports. It then reviews provincial labour market trends and makes some labour market projections that include discussion of industries facing skill or labour shortages, the impact of the ageing workforce, and employment opportunities to be created by the 2010 Winter Olympics. This is followed by a summary of current research on employment for persons with disabilities and an outline of gaps in this research relevant to British Columbia. The final section highlights some potential areas of action to improve employment outcomes for persons with disabilities.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, the nation's and world's economies have experienced massive and continuing changes. Technological innovation, globalization, the emergence of a knowledge economy and similar trends have improved the quality and standard of living for millions of people and offer the potential to do the same for millions more. Yet, for our nation to prosper in the 21st century global economy, the American Dream must be accessible to all those who work hard to achieve it. As our nation rebuilds its economy and middle class, we must seek out and seize opportunities to enable people with disabilities to gain and sustain good jobs and careers that can lead to better self-supporting futures. Passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has enabled more people with disabilities to join the workforce than ever before. Today, young people with disabilities expect to join the workforce and to be financially independent. Unfortunately, the vast majority of working age adults with disabilities still face structural and attitudinal barriers that block their access to steady employment and economic security. In order to fulfill the promise of the ADA - equal employment opportunity and full inclusion - we need to create new curb cuts and pathways for people with disabilities.
