"The Fall of Atlantis," just written, was largely suggested by last summer's reading of stories of ideal states; also by Zeller's account of the fabled strikes of piper-priests and of the women in ancient Rome; but above all by the profound conviction that certain degenerative changes - industrial, social, hygienic, and religious - are going on in our civilization and especially in our own land which may perhaps be realized by a larger historic perspective, which only imagination can supply. It might have been entitled, "Strikes of Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Clergy, and finally Women, Causing the Downfall and at last the Physical Engulfment of a Superstate." It is in some sense an aftermath of my "Morale." "How Johnnie's Vision Came True" was suggested partly by the Schopenhauer-Weininger theory of sex counterparts; also by pubic initiation rites and their morale, described in my "Adolescence." It is meant, too, to illustrate the psychology of Doppelganger and of Mondsucht, as represented by Rank and Sadger respectively, a theme which many writers have attempted from Peter Schlemihl to Wilde's Dorian Grey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archives of Psychology, Vol. 2: 1908-11 In the pages which follow are presented some data relating to the problem of the hearing of primitive peoples. The study was made in connection with other experiments on the inferior races at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904. During the period of the Exposition, the writer, in the capacity of Assistant Superintendent of the Sections of Anthropometry and Psychometry, under the Division of Anthropology, in cooperation with Dr. (now Professor) R. S. Woodworth, who was his immediately superior officer, was commissioned to make a study, so far as practicable, of the mental and physical status of the alien races stationed on the Exposition grounds. In the arrangements for the tests, the entire problem of the hearing of these people was assigned to me - the ways and means of testing their hearing, together with the turn and scope the particular study of hearing should take. When it came to the question of selecting the tests to be made, there was little of historical precedent to aid in making a choice. Dr. Charles Myers, in the only extended report on the hearing of primitive peoples extant, had examined three phases of hearing, namely: (1) The upper threshold of pitch, (2) the acuity for tones of medium pitch, and (3) the perception of interval. In addition to these three tests, a number of others, which might have brought out interesting and instructive results, suggested themselves to me. These related to space perception, tone memory and imagery, and clang preferences. The scope of our work, however, was subject to certain definite limitations. In all, there were stationed at the Exposition in one capacity or another, something like one thousand individuals of various races, whom it might be possible to measure. There were two of us to carry on the work. One of two alternatives, consequently, must be pursued, (a) to restrict the number of measurements which should be made of each individual or (b) to confine the measurements to a few representative individuals and races. We chose the first in the hope that with relatively large groups some fairly definite information could be obtained. In consequence of this limitation of the number of measurements, it was thought advisable to confine the number of tests of hearing to three or four. The best and those most often repeated have been changed most radically from their previous form. The public wishes large themes and large relations, so that it is needful to summarize several class lectures for the best results. A few of these I have delivered perhaps several score times; have rewritten them by syllabus and catch word and re planned over and over again with the constant tendency to emphasize the points approved and slight or omit those not appreciated, so that those which fit best the popular audience are those that touch upon the largest ideas and especially emphasize sentimental values. The public has within the last few years drifted far from the old ideas of what constitutes finished delivery and form, typified for instance in G. W. Curtis. They appreciate art and perfection of detail, but there must be no loudness or mechanical exactness about it, little anecdotage, but far more subtlety, hint and inuendo of mean ing. Intellectual brilliancy is sometimes preferred even by woman's clubs to emotional fervor, and never probably in the history of the world has there been such an appetite for novel ties and ideal reconstructions that involve sometimes almost a reversal of many a current consensus of opinion or settled practice. Originality is now the most desiderated and welcome form in which individuality or personality can be expressed. While there is interest in all the best and while our ideas of every part and aspect of it are undergoing radical transforma tion, a great desire of the popular mind is to forecast the future, and even the past is interesting chiefly as it enables us to do this. The world is in love with ideals, and in this country at least, is most plastic to them. How can we so live out our lives that none of the tendencies in us be allowed to degenerate, but the world become plastic to be moulded by the will, is now the ultimate problem.
