Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreation Uses on the National Forests Long before the National Forests were established men went hunting in the woods and fishing in the streams. Camping and picnicking in the wilds had an ancient priority over the administration of those same areas by the Federal Government for the production of timber and the conservation of water. These conditions were not changed by the assignment of the lands to the care of the National Forest Service, except that such recreation uses were multiplied and intensified. It is of course inevitable that the Forests should be so used. Outdoor recreation is a necessity of civilized life, and as civilization becomes more intensive the demand grows keener. The vast extent of our present National Forests, their enticing wildness, and the notable beauty of the native landscape lure men and women thither by hundreds of thousands. The really enormous extent and value of this kind of forest product has been generally overlooked in America. Book excerpt: This report summarizes more than 30 years of the literature on net economic value of outdoor recreation on public lands. The report provides average net willingness to pay or consumer surplus per day for 30 recreation activities at the national level. Values per day by recreation activity are also presented by census region of the United States. Detailed tables provide the average value per day as well as the standard error for calculating confidence intervals. Guidance for using these values in performing benefit transfer to unstudied sites is also provided. The report provides a link to a Web site where the spreadsheet that underlies the averages calculated in this report is available.

Book excerpt: Estimates of national forest recreation use are available at the national, regional, and forest levels via the USDA Forest Service National Visitor Use Monitoring (NVUM) program. In some resource planning and management applications, analysts desire recreation use estimates for subforest areas within an individual national forest or for subforest areas that combine portions of several national forests. In this research note we have detailed two approaches whereby the NVUM sampling data may be used to estimate recreation use for a subforest area within a single national forest or for a subforest area combining portions of more than one national forest. The approaches differ in their data requirements, complexity, and assumptions. In the "new forest" approach, recreation use is estimated by using NVUM data obtained only from NVUM interview sites within the area of interest. In the "all-forest information" approach, recreation use is estimated by using sample data gathered on all portions of the national forest(s) that contain the area of interest.

Book excerpt: Forest Recreation focuses on the increasing consideration of forests as destination for recreation. The book aims to put together the findings of researchers on the issues and problems that confront forest recreation administrators and the demands of the public. The selection also offers guidance to forest land managers with respect to the basic requirements of forest recreation as well as in planning. The book starts by defining outdoor recreation, including history and the factors affecting this type of recreation. The text then gives information on the number of forest recreation areas and the distribution of these areas, as well as the underlying legislation covering outdoor recreation. Forest recreation planning is noted, which includes a discussion of a state-wide comprehensive outdoor recreation plan. The book also discusses site selection and the development of recreation areas. Classification of areas in forests is also described, which includes picnic grounds, camping sites, and trails. Sanitation in forest recreation areas is also discussed. The text can best serve the interest of forest land managers, forest technicians, foresters, park technicians, and private landowners who are responsible in planning, developing, and administering forest recreation places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no other nation on earth devotes as large a portion of its public lands to recreational use as the United States. And while millions of Americans flock to our national parks, forests, and other public lands each year, these areas are also major attractions for international visitors and an important source of foreign exchange. The allocation, location, planning, and management of public lands for recreational use is now a major activity within each of the nation's four major land-managing agencies, and in several smaller departments as well. This book presents an overview of the vast and diverse federal recreation system, its historical evolution, methods of management and development, and the different roles played by the National Park Service, the Forest Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. It explores concepts in land-use planning, examines relevant federal legislation, and presents federal concepts for preserving amenity resources. Rather than make an exhaustive presentation of current facilities and recreational opportunities, author Charles Zinser uses a case study approach to illustrate and analyze programs and development principles found in each of the major agencies. More than 300 tables, maps, and illustrations supplement the text. An entire chapter is devoted to the recreational resources of smaller federal agencies, including the Army Corps of Engineers, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, all of which permit various forms of water-related recreation on reservoirs under their control. Many people are surprised to learn that, in terms of recreational use, the Army Corps of Engineers is the number-two federal agency. Packed with helpful, practical, and authoritative information, Outdoor Recreation is a one-stop source on the availability, development, and management of recreational resources within the federal system. It is a first-rate reference for anyone involved in forestry, geography, wildland or watershed management, land-use planning and development, or creating recreational facilities. It is also an ideal textbook for courses in geography and recreational use of public lands. The most complete guide available to the federal recreation system The system of federal lands devoted to outdoor recreation is as diverse bureaucratically as it is geographically. At least eight federal agencies administer recreational resources from mountain to seashore, from desert to glacier, in virtually every state and territory of the nation. This one-stop sourcebook offers complete information on the acquisition, development, management, and protection of these resources, including: Extensive coverage of recreational resources administered by federal land-managing agencies that control one fourth of our national territory A review of the basic concepts of land-use planning An examination of the federal legislation that created current programs and facilities Numerous maps, statistical tables, and illustrations not available from any other source Case studies that illustrate the practical impact of federal policies and concepts Examples of federal plans for protecting these resources, including: the National Wilderness Preservation System, National Trails System, and the National Wild and Scenic River System
