Book excerpt: "This document describes the 2016 Recovery Potential Assessment (RPA) of the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Designatable Unit) DU of Winter Skate. New information in this RPA includes an additional 10 years of survey data and fishery removals, new survey indices combining September Research Vessel (RV) survey data (1971 to 2014) and Northumberland survey data (2000 to 2014) using density-dependent habitat selection (DDHS) theory, results of ageing studies yielding length-at-age information, an age-structured population model, estimates of skate discard mortality in the sGSL and additional information on predation by grey seals as an important cause of the elevated natural mortality of adult skates"--Intro., p. 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book brings readers up to date on the wide range of advances made in fisheries science since the publication in 1957 of On the Dynamics of Exploited Fish Populations (Beverton and Holt), regarded by many fisheries scientists as one of the most important books on fisheries yet published. Traditional fishery subjects covered include historic declines and changes in fishing fleets, fisheries management and stock assessments, data-poor situations, simulation and modelling of fished stocks, fisheries economics, assessing reproductive potential and dispersal of larvae, fisheries for sharks and rays, and use of marine technology. Additionally, related subjects of increasing importance now that ecological approaches to management are coming to the fore are presented. They include benthic ecology, ecosystem changes linked to fishing, life history theory, the effects of chemicals on fish reproduction, and use of sounds in the sea by marine life. Several chapters offer stimulating philosophical discussion of the many controversial areas still existing. This significant book, edited by Andy Payne, John Cotter and Ted Potter and containing contributions by world-renowned fisheries scientists, including many based at Cefas (where Beverton and Holt's original work was carried out) is an essential purchase for fisheries managers and scientists, fish biologists, marine scientists and ecologists. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where fisheries and biological sciences are studied and taught are likely to need copies of this landmark publication.

Whidden and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little Skate, Leucoraja erinacea, and Winter Skate, Leucoraja ocellata, are sympatric, sibling species in the western Atlantic Ocean. The K-selected life history characteristics of skates make them highly sensitive to exploitation, and long-term conservation efforts are required when populations have been overfished even if only as bycatch. Little Skate were assessed as Near Threatened, and Winter Skate Endangered in Canadian waters by the IUCN. Species identification is problematic in these species; therefore, sequencing of the mitochondrial DNA Cytochrome Oxidase I gene confirmed the identification of Little Skate and Winter Skate. Prior to 2013, skates had never been surveyed in the inner Bay of Fundy. Skates were sampled at an intertidal herring weir in Bramber, Nova Scotia, across three field seasons (2012 - 2014), and on directed trawls in the inner Bay of Fundy (2013 - 2014). In total, 2,396 skates were tagged and 135 skates were recaptured. Samples were collected for disc shape analysis using a General Procrustes Alignment, Procrustes ANOVA, and Principle Component Analysis. Of the skates genetically confirmed to species, it was found that trawling caught seemingly more Little Skate, while the weir caught more Winter Skate. Females outnumbered males across all seasons and both fishing methods. Small and medium-sized skates were most abundant across all years, and the greatest proportion of large individuals was at the start of the fishing season, in early May. Catch abundance appeared lowest at pre-neap and neap tides, and appeared greatest at approximately mid-amplitude tide height of -6 m on descending tides. A Schnabel population estimate of 29,465 (24,890 - 36,100) was calculated for likely local populations of Little Skate and Winter Skate, and most recaptured skates returned to the weir within 50 days. Estimates of sexual maturity for Little Skate and Winter Skate in the inner Bay of Fundy were 40 cm and 49 cm, respectively. Sexual dimorphism in disc shape was found in Little Skate, but not Winter Skate. Disc shape, clasper length, alar thorns, midline thorns, cloacal rough patch, and extruded cloacas are all useful for in-field species identification, particularly at 35 - 50 cm. Eyespots were found to not be indicative of species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skates have become a concern in recent years due to the preponderance of these elasmobranchs that are caught as bycatch or as a directed fishery. This has raised concern because skates have life history characteristics that may make them vulnerable to over-exploitation. It was due to this concern that prompted Drs. David Ebert and James Sulikowski to organize an international symposium on the “Biology of Skates”. The aims and goals of the symposium were to bring together an international group of researchers to meet, discuss, perhaps develop collaborations, and present their most recent findings. The symposium was held over two days, on 13-14 July, 2006, in conjunction with the 22nd annual meeting of the American Elasmobranch Society in New Orleans, LA. A total of 31 authors from four countries contributed 16 papers that appear in this volume. The papers are broadly arranged into four separate categories: systematics and biogeography, diet and feeding ecology, reproductive biology, and age and growth. This is the first dedicated book on the biology of skates. We hope that readers will find this volume of interest and that it helps encourage and stimulate future research into these fascinating fishes.

Book excerpt: This landmark publication collates information and studies on the use of estuaries, and specific habitats within them, as nursery, feeding and refuge areas, and migration routes of marine and other fish, many of which are of commercial and conservation importance. The editors and authors of the book have carefully compiled a huge wealth of information from the work of 18 organizations across 11 countries, providing a unique collection of data never before brought together within the covers of one book. Chapters within this exceptional publication cover habitat use by fishes, recruitment and production in estuaries, links between fish and other trophic levels, endangered and rare species, estuarine development and restoration, environmental quality of estuaries and the management of estuarine fishes. The book notably contains extensive chapters on field methods and data analysis. Fishes in Estuaries is an essential tool and reference source for fisheries and environmental managers, fish biologists, environmental scientists, aquatic ecologists and conservation biologists. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this book on their shelves, as should personnel employed in regulatory and consultant capacities, such as within rivers authorities, environment agencies and fish and wildlife departments. Comprehensive coverage of commercially exploited species. Internationally known and respected contributors. Multi-contributor approach providing very detailed coverage. Estuaries are a vitally important ecosystem.
