It examines evidence that stuttering is associated with a range of biological factors — such as genetics — and psychological factors — such as anxiety — and it critically assesses theoretical accounts that attempt to integrate these findings. Written so that it can be used flexibly to meet the demands of courses about stuttering, the book may be used as a text at the undergraduate or graduate level in psychology or speech-language science.

Book excerpt: Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy of Stuttering (REBTS) delivers permanent recovery from stuttering by addressing stuttering from a wholistic point of view. Not only does it target the mechanical speech aspects of stuttering by constantly reducing the severity and frequency of speech disfluencies, but it also works on the conscious and subconscious cognitions about self and stuttering that propagate struggled, forced speech, concomitant extraneous motions called secondary stuttering, and the negative emotions associated with stuttering. The REBTS process results in thinking clearly, speaking freely, and living fully.By following the suggestions in this book, we can practically guarantee operational fluency because REBTS:Enhances motivation by encouraging the use of a written journal and weekly smart phone generated video clips to show progress. Can eliminate or at least greatly reduce anxiety and other negative emotions that exacerbate stuttering. Teaches you how to unconditionally accept yourself and your stuttering as you begin to stutter less and less frequently and severely. This book teaches you to substitute easy bounces for forced, struggled stutters. The easy bounces, which are simple repetitions of the first syllable of a word, become less and less frequent and severe until they practically disappear. The occasional times when you encounter them do not interfere with your communication and do not call extra attention from the listener.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Fraser knew from personal experience what the person who stutters is up against. His introduction to stuttering corrective procedures first came at the age of fifteen under the direction of Frederick Martin, M.D., who at that time was Superintendent of Speech Correction for the New York City schools. A few years later, he worked with J. Stanley Smith, L.L.D., a stutterer and philanthropist, who, for altruistic reasons, founded the Kingsley Clubs in Philadelphia and New York that were named after the English author, Charles Kingsley, who also stuttered. The Kingsley Clubs were small groups of adult stutterers who met one night a week to try out treatment ideas then in effect. In fact, they were actually practicing group therapy as they talked about their experiences and exchanged ideas. This exchange gave each of the members a better understanding of the problem. The founder often led the discussions at both clubs. In 1928 Malcolm Fraser joined his older brother Carlyle who founded the NAPA-Genuine Parts Company that year in Atlanta, Georgia. He became an important leader in the company and was particularly outstanding in training others for leadership roles. In 1947, with a successful career under way, he founded the Stuttering Foundation of America. In subsequent years, he added generously to the endowment so that at the present time, endowment income covers over fifty percent of the operating budget. In 1984, Malcolm Fraser received the fourth annual National Council on Communicative Disorders' Distinguished Service Award. The NCCD, a council of 32 national organizations, recognized the Foundation's efforts in "adding to stutterers', parents', clinicians', and the public's awareness and ability to deal constructively with stuttering." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stuttering, caused by a disorder in the brain’s right hemisphere, can limit one’s life in a variety of ways, from job choices and advancement to social and romantic opportunities. Typical remedies emphasizing antidepressants and electronic devices have had mixed results at best. Yoga for Stuttering takes a fresh approach based on ancient methods. Author J.M. Balakrishnan combines an understanding of the neurological aspects of stuttering with yoga methods long used in India for remediation to form a new, natural method for improving vocal fluency. The book presents three related branches of yoga and their accompanying practices, nada yoga (chanting and vocalization), hatha yoga (yoga poses), and raja yoga (guided meditations), providing the reader with sets of voice, breathing, and physical exercises to help relax the body and mind, relieve chronic tension, and achieve fluent speech. The book features photos and illustrations to make the method easy to follow, and no prior knowledge of yoga is required. Yoga for Stuttering was created to meet the needs of those who have not obtained relief through traditional methods and is aimed at both speech pathologists and individuals looking for a holistic, drug-free approach to the condition.

Book excerpt: The definitive treatment textbook in psychiatry, this fifth edition of Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders has been thoroughly restructured to reflect the new DSM-5® categories, preserving its value as a state-of-the-art resource and increasing its utility in the field. The editors have produced a volume that is both comprehensive and concise, meeting the needs of clinicians who prefer a single, user-friendly volume. In the service of brevity, the book focuses on treatment over diagnostic considerations, and addresses both empirically-validated treatments and accumulated clinical wisdom where research is lacking. Noteworthy features include the following: Content is organized according to DSM-5® categories to make for rapid retrieval of relevant treatment information for the busy clinician. Outcome studies and expert opinion are presented in an accessible way to help the clinician know what treatment to use for which disorder, and how to tailor the treatment to the patient. Content is restricted to the major psychiatric conditions seen in clinical practice while leaving out less common conditions and those that have limited outcome research related to the disorder, resulting in a more streamlined and affordable text. Chapters are meticulously referenced and include dozens of tables, figures, and other illustrative features that enhance comprehension and recall. An authoritative resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses, and an outstanding reference for students in the mental health professions, Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders, Fifth Edition, will prove indispensable to clinicians seeking to provide excellent care while transitioning to a DSM-5® world.

Book excerpt: This textbook presents a new paradigm for understanding the nature and treatment of stuttering based on recent discoveries in neuroscience. The authors illustrate how visible stuttering manifestations are actually a solution to a central problem, acting as a compensatory mechanism for a central involuntary block, rather than a problem in themselves. This book features methods that reduce stuttering by inhibiting this central block, through the use of sensory and motor tools, notably mirror neurons, and shows readers that stuttering is not a condition that can be effortlessly "trained out" of the system or eliminated via simple speech retraining.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After failing at university, socially isolated and driven by his stuttering to the point of despair, an unexpected encounter with a book about Zen provided a glimmer of hope. Then, little by little his fortune changed, and the stutter - which, previously had posed the greatest obstacle - became the catalyst for the development of a new and profoundly liberating perspective on life. Interwoven with Brocklehurst's personal story, The Perfect Stutter explores the nature of language and verbal communication, the significance of mistakes, and the roles that values and value-judgements play in our lives. In so doing, the book highlights the importance of our deepest desires and their relevance to our understanding of what it means to be a human being. About the Author After his stuttering ceased to be a problem, Paul Brocklehurst returned to university to study Speech Therapy, then Psycholinguistics, and then finally, he completed a doctorate in Experimental Psychology. As a researcher, he is best known for his investigation of the nature of inner speech, the relationship between stuttering and the fear of communication failure, and for his development of the Variable Release Threshold Hypothesis of stuttering. In recent years he has become an active member of the stuttering self-help community and is well known for his promotion of mindfulness in people who stutter and for his work as director of the Stammering Self-Empowerment Programme. After retiring from academic life, he moved to the French Pyrenees where he now divides his time between walking in the mountains, growing organic vegetables, running mindfulness groups, and writing.
