Book excerpt: "Bilingual anthology introduces 13 poets born between 1945-66. Unfortunately, the state of Paraná is over-represented with seven poets, and only four other states are represented at all, thus ignoring much of the richness and variety of Brazilian poetry today"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.

Book Synopsis La prisión y las instituciones punitivas en la investigación histórica by : Pedro Oliver Olmo
Download or read book La prisión y las instituciones punitivas en la investigación histórica written by Pedro Oliver Olmo and published by Universidad de Castilla La Mancha. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Social History of Punitive Institutions in Spain needs meetings and discussions, comparison and collaboration between researchers. Only then it will become visible and intelligible as a historiographical trend and, above all, as a theoretical-methodological hope, because in fact, now it is more than conceivable as a historiographical practice. Here in this book are outlined, along with the achievements, the shortcomings and the most pressing challenges. Far from seeking an extemporaneous autonomy, Social History of Punitive Institutions wants to try to find its own feasibility based on intersections and good mixings. Those objectives were considered by the Study Group about History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (Grupo de Estudio sobre la Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas, GEHPIP) –an interuniversity team and with central office at Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM)– when organising what it decided to name in an homonymous way 1st International Congress on History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (I Congreso Internacional sobre Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas), held in Ciudad Real (Spain) from 10 to 12 April 2013. The electronic book here presented is a good example of what it was told and discussed there.

Book Synopsis Literary Culture and U.S. Imperialism by : John Carlos Rowe
Download or read book Literary Culture and U.S. Imperialism written by John Carlos Rowe and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Carlos Rowe, considered one of the most eminent and progressive critics of American literature, has in recent years become instrumental in shaping the path of American studies. His latest book examines literary responses to U.S. imperialism from the late eighteenth century to the 1940s. Interpreting texts by Charles Brockden Brown, Poe, Melville, John Rollin Ridge, Twain, Henry Adams, Stephen Crane, W. E. B Du Bois, John Neihardt, Nick Black Elk, and Zora Neale Hurston, Rowe argues that U.S. literature has a long tradition of responding critically or contributing to our imperialist ventures. Following in the critical footsteps of Richard Slotkin and Edward Said, Literary Culture and U.S. Imperialism is particularly innovative in taking account of the public and cultural response to imperialism. In this sense it could not be more relevant to what is happening in the scholarship, and should be vital reading for scholars and students of American literature and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book comprises performative works and actions carried out in the streets (Artistic-Social Events) by Clemente Padín (Uruguay 1939) from 1970 to 2010. It has an extensive prologue by the German theorist and performer Boris Nieslony, promoter of the Black Market, one of the most prestigious and well-known institutions in the world of action art. It has a direct translation from German by Mario Daniel Cohn, professor at the Goethe Institute in Montevideo, Uruguay In addition to the documentary records of each selected action, the book includes three essays by Padín. Every Sunday, in the heart of Montevideo, a fair-whose axis is Tristán Narvaja Street-is filled with people, books and antiques. In this busy meeting point, the multidisciplinary artist Clemente Padín, precursor of mail art, poet (developer of "visual poetry" and "experimental poetry"), performer, plastic and video artist, he stood on August 17, 1987 in the middle of the street and began to compulsively beat a dry mannequin with a police baton. He counted each stroke aloud while another person wrote down the numbers on a white cardboard. At the end, he clarified that this number corresponded to those disappeared for political reasons during the dictatorship in Uruguay. Then he placed his back in front of the cardboard for someone to draw his outline. He cut out the silhouette and distributed the pieces of paper among the participants, loudly demanding the appearance alive of the people represented in those numbers. This is one of the many performance interventions he has made between 1970 and 2009, all documented in this book.
