Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reconstruction in North Carolina North Carolina after November 21, 1789, the day on which she adopted the Constitution of the United States, was, while closely allied by association, blood, and interest with the South ern States, strongly attached to the Union. Stirred at times by sectional feeling, acting always in the interest of the slave States, when the sectional issue was drawn, the deep love for the Union in all classes Of the people prevented any great spread Of disunion sentiment until long after most Of the Southern States looked upon secession as by no means a remote possibility. Book Synopsis Internal Improvements in North Carolina Previous to 1860 (Classic Reprint) by : Charles Clinton Weaver

This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Internal Improvements in North Carolina Previous to 1860 The aim of this study has been to present the movement for internal improvements as it affected the State as a whole, and to discuss the most important enterprises that were undertaken during a limited period. In its prepar ation I have used State laws, reports of the various State officers and the State newspapers of the time. There are also some contemporary narratives, such as Judge Mur phy's Memorial, which have been of assistance. But, for the greater part, I have had to depend upon the docu ments found in the State Library at Raleigh. In' addition to this, President Peacock kindly gave me access to the very fine collection of North Carolina literature at Greens boro Female College. The work stops at the outbreak of the Civil War, for there are several reasons why this is an appropriate point to close the subject. In the first place there was at that time a complete suspension of public works in the State. After the war those which were undertaken were of a different kind and were carried on by totally different methods. Then too, during reconstruction, the question was one which was intimately connected with politics, and was more than a mere question of internal development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "South Carolina's economy was devastated by the time the Civil War ended. ...For the following ten years, South Carolina went through the most difficult period in its history. On May 15, 1865, General Gilmore issued an order declaring, that 'the people of the black race are free citizens of the United States,' whose rights must be respected accordingly. The primary purpose of the occupying military force was to ensure those rights. The story of that decade is filled with political corruption on an unbelievable scale while the State was being run by an appointed, incompetent, Legislature... To understand South Carolina today, one must know what happened during the post-war period as the freed slaves were guided into citizenship by the Freedman's Bureau. For Carolinians, the war was finally over on Tuesday, April 10, 1877, at 12 o'clock, noon, when Federal troops left the State House."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of North Carolina ON the 4th of July, 1584, two English ships hove in sight of the coast of North Carolina, somewhere about Cape Fear. They were the vessels of Sir Walter Raleigh, and were on a voyage of discovery, to take possession of some portion of the new world in the name of the crown of England. The day on which they first beheld the shores of our country has since become the great political holiday of the age, 'a'nd is now distinguished as the anniversary, not of the origin, but of the downfall of the authority of Eng land over the United States. The commanders of these two ships were Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe; and the ceremony which they performed upon the coast of North Carolina, and which I am now about to celebrate, is perhaps one of the most memorable events in the history of mankind.
