Book excerpt: Climate change assessments predict that rates of relative sea level rise will increase in the future, leading to enhanced inundation of low-lying coastal regions and a 20 – 50 % decline in salt marsh area by 2100. Global sea level rise began accelerating in the late 19th to early 20th century, and local rates along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast are twice as fast as global estimates. Frequent flooding and salt stress associated with sea level rise lead to coastal transgression, and the survival of ecosystems depends on their ability to migrate inland faster than they erode and submerge. Here, I compared aerial imagery analyses and field measurements to test the hypothesis that marsh migration into retreating terrestrial forests is fundamentally tied to sea level rise, and that sea level rise does not necessarily lead to overall habitat loss. For my first chapter, I compared the areal salt marsh extent between historical topographic maps and modern aerial imageries across the entire Chesapeake Bay, and found that marsh migration into terrestrial forests largely compensated for marsh erosion at the seaward edge during the last century. This emphasizes that the location of coastal ecosystems changes rapidly on centennial timescales, and that sea level rise does not necessarily lead to overall habitat loss. For my second chapter, I reconstructed the position of coastal treelines through time at five study sites along the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast to identify long- and short- term drivers of coastal forest retreat. Book excerpt: Long-term persistence of coastal wetlands depends on maintenance of surface elevations relative to sea-level rise also in the presence of other natural and anthropogenic stressors. To predict coastal marsh response to future sea-level rise, it is important to understand how marshes responded to past sea-level rise. The objective of this study was to reconstruct vegetation histories from sediment cores collected in Big Branch NWR, Louisiana, USA, Pearl River WMA, Louisiana, USA, and Grand Bay NERR, Mississippi, USA. A dichotomous key was created using characteristics of modern plant species common in coastal marshes of the northern Gulf of Mexico, which was used to identify vegetative fragments preserved in cores. Cores were radiocarbon dated and also examined for soil characteristics (bulk density, organic content). Vegetation and soil characteristic data were processed using SiZer to determine significant shifts or changes of vegetative community and soil characteristics over time. Several significant shifts in the vegetative communities were detected at all sites (Big Branch: six shifts; Pearl River: four shifts; Grand Bay: four shifts) in addition to multiple significant shifts in bulk density (Big Branch: five shifts; Pearl River: three shifts; Grand Bay: two shifts). Results indicate that these brackish marshes have maintained surface elevations relative to sea-level through both physical and biological processes. Extended periods of organic matter accumulation (demonstrated by presence of preserved vegetation) were interrupted by periods/pulses of sediment deposition (demonstrated by increases in bulk density and decreases in organic matter content). The approach developed in this project will aid in identifying and interpreting past changes in coastal wetlands in response to sea-level rise and other global change factors.

Therefore, the long term sustainability of tidal marsh ecosystems is a question of great interest in the research community. Sea level is rising at an unusually high rate in the Chesapeake Bay relative to most of the Atlantic coastline, putting Bay marshes at high risk from drowning and erosion. Sea level rise-driven salinity changes communities and alters ecosystem services. Understanding the patterns of change and the importance of different drivers of change is critical to tidal marsh sustainability. The overarching goal of this research is to examine how changes in natural and anthropogenic factors interact to affect tidal wetland distribution, extent and plant composition with the intent of promoting coastal resiliency to sea level rise impacts through informed coastal management. I quantified changes in marsh extent over the past 40 years and related changes in marsh extent to sea level rise and other drivers of change. Then I examined shifts in plant community composition throughout the Chesapeake Bay, VA, looking for signals of increased inundation and salinity. In small headwater systems, I explored the utility of these changes in plant composition for predicting soil sulfur content (an early signal of salinity intrusion). These changes in marshes from the past 40 years were used to elucidate results from an elevation-based model of future marsh persistence under accelerating sea level rise. Several lessons emerged from this dissertation: 1. Analyses of changes in tidal marsh extent and plant communities are complementary, clarifying vulnerabilities and prognosis under future conditions. 2. Human shoreline use (e.g., development, shoreline hardening, boating activity) can dominate physical processes to alter the marsh response to sea level rise. 3. Defining sediment availability for a given marsh may not be sufficient to determine its potential for expansion or persistence under sea level rise. 5. Marsh plant communities can be an early signal of change, showing shifts in inundation frequency before there is any change in marsh extent. 6. Tidal marshes will continue to decline over the next 100 years. However, most of the loss will be in low salinity, riverine marshes. Some high salinity, Bayfront marshes will expand if the land they need to migrate is preserved. 7. Tidal marsh response to sea level rise has, and will continue to, vary by marsh form, geologic setting, location in the estuary, and surrounding land use decisions. 9. Targeted land use decisions coupled with active restoration may help minimize future marsh loss.

Book excerpt: Tidal salt marshes are viewed as critical habitats for the production of fish and shellfish. As a result, considerable legislation has been promulgated to conserve and protect these habitats, and much of it is in effect today. The relatively young science of ecological engineering has also emerged, and there are now attempts to reverse centuries-old losses by encouraging sound wetland restoration practices. Today, tens of thousands of hectares of degraded or isolated coastal wetlands are being restored worldwide. Whether restored wetlands reach functional equivalency to `natural' systems is a subject of heated debate. Equally debatable is the paradigm that depicts tidal salt marshes as the `great engine' that drives much of the secondary production in coastal waters. This view was questioned in the early 1980s by investigators who noted that total carbon export, on the order of 100 to 200 g m-2 y-1 was of much lower magnitude than originally thought. These authors also recognized that some marshes were either net importers of carbon, or showed no net exchange. Thus, the notion of `outwelling' has become but a single element in an evolving view of marsh function and the link between primary and secondary production. The `revisionist' movement was launched in 1979 when stable isotopic ratios of macrophytes and animal tissues were found to be `mismatched'. Some eighteen years later, the view of marsh function is still undergoing additional modification, and we are slowly unraveling the complexities of biogeochemical cycles, nutrient exchange, and the links between primary producers and the marsh/estuary fauna. Yet, since Teal's seminal paper nearly forty years ago, we are not much closer to understanding how marshes work. If anything, we have learned that the story is far more complicated than originally thought. Despite more than four decades of intense research, we do not yet know how salt marshes function as essential habitat, nor do we know the relative contributions to secondary production, both in situ or in the open waters of the estuary. The theme of this Symposium was to review the status of salt marsh research and revisit the existing paradigm(s) for salt marsh function. Challenge questions were designed to meet the controversy head on: Do marshes support the production of marine transient species? If so, how? Are any of these species marsh obligates? How much of the production takes place in situ versus in open waters of the estuary/coastal zone? Sessions were devoted to reviews of landmark studies, or current findings that advance our knowledge of salt marsh function. A day was also devoted to ecological engineering and wetland restoration papers addressing state-of-the-art methodology and specific case histories. Several challenge papers arguing for and against our ability to restore functional salt marshes led off each session. This volume is intended to serve as a synthesis of our current understanding of the ecological role of salt marshes, and will, it is hoped, pave the way for a new generation of research.
