Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing social interest in developing vision-based vehicle guidance systems for improving traffic safety and efficiency and the environment. Ex amples of vision-based vehicle guidance systems include collision warning systems, steering control systems for tracking painted lane marks, and speed control systems for preventing rear-end collisions. Like other guidance systems for aircraft and trains, these systems are ex pected to increase traffic safety significantly. For example, safety improve ments of aircraft landing processes after the introduction of automatic guidance systems have been reported to be 100 times better than prior to installment. Although the safety of human lives is beyond price, the cost for automatic guidance could be compensated by decreased insurance costs. It is becoming more important to increase traffic safety by decreasing the human driver's load in our society, especially with an increasing population of senior people who continue to drive. The second potential social benefit is the improvement of traffic efficiency by decreasing the spacing between vehicles without sacrificing safety. It is reported, for example, that four times the efficiency is expected if the spacing between cars is controlled automatically at 90 cm with a speed of 100 kmjh compared to today's typical manual driving. Although there are a lot of tech nical, psychological, and social issues to be solved before realizing the high density jhigh-speed traffic systems described here, highly efficient highways are becoming more important because of increasing traffic congestion.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LES TRAVAUX PRESENTES DANS CE MEMOIRE S'INSCRIVENT DANS LE CADRE GENERAL DE LA RECONNAISSANCE D'OBJETS TRIDIMENSIONNELS. ILS ONT CONSISTE A DEVELOPPER UN SYSTEME DE VISION PERMETTANT D'ANALYSER UNE SCENE ET D'IDENTIFIER UN ENSEMBLE D'OBJETS CONNUS. CE SYSTEME EST BASE SUR L'UTILISATION D'UNE CAMERA MONOCULAIRE DELIVRANT DES IMAGES SUR 256 NIVEAUX DE GRIS. AUCUNE INFORMATION A PRIORI SUR L'ENVIRONNEMENT DU ROBOT N'EST DISPONIBLE POUR L'INTERPRETATION. LA FINALITE DE CE SYSTEME EST DE DONNER LA LISTE DES OBJETS RECONNUS DANS LA SCENE AINSI QUE LEUR POSE POUR DES APPLICATIONS POSTERIEURES. NOUS NOUS SOMMES ATTACHES AU SCHEMA TRADITIONNEL DE LA RECONNAISSANCE D'OBJETS EN VISION, COMPOSE DE TROIS GRANDES PARTIES RESPECTIVEMENT DESIGNEES DE BAS, MOYEN ET HAUT NIVEAU. NOUS AVONS PORTE NOTRE CHOIX DE PRIMITIVES SUR LES SEGMENTS ET APPLIQUONS UN ALGORITHME BASE SUR L'ORIENTATION DU GRADIENT. AFIN DE CORRIGER LES DEFAUTS INHERENTS AUX METHODES DE SEGMENTATION, UN ALGORITHME DE FUSION DES SEGMENTS BASE SUR DES CRITERES LIES A L'ORGANISATION PERCEPTIVE ET SUR L'UTILISATION DE LA THEORIE DE DEMPSTER-SHAFER A ETE DEVELOPPE. CETTE METHODE PERMET SANS AUCUN PARAMETRAGE MANUEL DE RECONSTRUIRE LES SEGMENTS MORCELES MAIS EGALEMENT DE CORRIGER LES PETITES OCCLUSIONS. DANS LA MEME OPTIQUE DE REDUCTION DE COMPLEXITE, UN ALGORITHME DE REGROUPEMENT PERCEPTIF DESTINE A DETECTER LES OBJETS PRESENTS DANS LA SCENE A EGALEMENT ETE ELABORE. CET ALGORITHME PROPOSE UNE UTILISATION DE REGLES ISSUES DE LA THEORIE GESTALTISTE APPLIQUEE PAR LA METHODE DE DEMPSTER-SHAFER. POUR LES OPERATIONS DE FUSION ET DE REGROUPEMENT, LES METHODES PROPOSEES SE SONT AVEREES PARTICULIEREMENT INTERESSANTES. EN EFFET, NOUS OBTENONS DES RESULTATS PRECIS DANS LA DETECTION DES OBJETS, MAIS, DE PLUS, AUCUN PARAMETRAGE N'EST NECESSAIRE. APRES LA DETECTION, LES DERNIERES ETAPES A FRANCHIR DANS LE PROCESSUS DE RECONNAISSANCE CONCERNENT L'INDEXATION ET LA MISE EN CORRESPONDANCE. L'INDEXATION PERMET, EN PEU DE TEMPS, DE FILTRER LES MODELES POUVANT ETRE MIS EN CORRESPONDANCE AVEC LES GROUPES DE PRIMITIVES FORMES. POUR SA REALISATION, NOUS NOUS SOMMES APPUYES SUR LES QUASI-INVARIANTS GEOMETRIQUES ASSOCIES A UN ALGORITHME DE COALESCENCE FOURNISSANT DES RESULTATS DIRECTEMENT UTILISABLES LORS DE LA MISE EN CORRESPONDANCE. EN EFFET, LE CALCUL DES QUASI-INVARIANTS PERMET DE REGROUPER LES COUPLES DE SEGMENTS AYANT UNE EXTREMITE COMMUNE, CE QUI ACCELERE LE PROCESSUS D'ALIGNEMENT EN PHASE DE MISE EN CORRESPONDANCE. FINALEMENT, NOUS PROPOSONS D'EVALUER LES PERFORMANCES DU SYSTEME, ET, NOUS PRESENTONS DE NOMBREUX RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX ISSUES DE SCENES REELLES.
