Book excerpt: Excerpt from Words of Reconciliation, 1889, Vol. 5 This hope toward God that there shall be a resurrec tion both of the just and the unjust is an essential part of the gospel, without which it cannot be glad tidings of great joy to all people. It has been our mission amid discour agement and reproach, to hold forth this word of life. And we are sure that we who have had fellowship in this seed-sowing shall rejoice together in a harvest of blessing to the church and of honor to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, in the day when His true glory as the Saviour of mankind is revealed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconciliation: Who Was to Be Reconciled? God or Man? Or God and Man?; Some Chapters on the Biblical View of the Atonement As the Author is thoroughly loyal to the Bible he finds in it nothing to deny and nothing to explain away; with him there 15 no denying of the full, absolute divinity of Christ, no belittling of sin or the punishment due to it, no questioning of the justice or wrath of God, rather the reverse of all this: he lays greater stress on all these facts than do most of his opponents. He brings no pet theory to the Bible to be proved or defended by it; he simply asks: Blessed Book, what dost thou teach? And then he records the answer. Hence, he mentions and combats no theories by name whether the moral, the vicarious, the governmental, or any other. If, dear reader, you 'must have a name for the Author's view, call it the Scriptural, 'or the Biblical, one, the Bible View of the Atonement. It is not Atone ment, because that is an indefinite term; it is not the Atonement, because that is an ambiguous ex pression; nor is it the doctrine of the Atonement, because that is a theological phrase; but it is the doctrine of Reconciliation with God, as set forth in the Scriptures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faithful to Save is an exposition and analysis of Pannenberg's doctrine of reconciliation as it appears in his three-volume Systematic Theology. It suggests that this doctrine is best approached by bearing in mind its three most salient characteristics, all of which are inter-dependent, and when kept in view make the essential tenets of Pannenberg's account transparent: God acts freely and immediately in and for creation; history is a function of the faithfulness of God to his creation; reconciliation is an expression of this faithfulness towards sinful creation - God's 'holding fast' to creation despite its self-destructive self-assertion. On the basis of a detailed examination of the central texts, it argues that Pannenberg's doctrine of reconciliation at once marks out God's action in the world as the true Infinite and issues an invitation to consider how such a God extends himself in reconciling love to his creatures so that their finite creatureliness is at every turn affirmed and found to be in the end 'good'.

This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of the Year by The San Francisco Chronicle "Survivor Café . . . feels like the book Rosner was born to write. Each page is imbued with urgency, with sincerity, with heartache, with heart.... Her words, alongside the words of other survivors of atrocity and their descendants across the globe, can help us build a more humane world." —San Francisco Chronicle As firsthand survivors of many of the twentieth century's most monumental events—the Holocaust, Hiroshima, the Killing Fields—begin to pass away, Survivor Café addresses urgent questions: How do we carry those stories forward? How do we collectively ensure that the horrors of the past are not forgotten? Elizabeth Rosner organizes her book around three trips with her father to Buchenwald concentration camp—in 1983, in 1995, and in 2015—each journey an experience in which personal history confronts both commemoration and memorialization. She explores the echoes of similar legacies among descendants of African American slaves, descendants of Cambodian survivors of the Killing Fields, descendants of survivors of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the effects of 9/11 on the general population. Examining current brain research, Rosner depicts the efforts to understand the intergenerational inheritance of trauma, as well as the intricacies of remembrance in the aftermath of atrocity. Survivor Café becomes a lens for numerous constructs of memory—from museums and commemorative sites to national reconciliation projects to small–group cross–cultural encounters. Beyond preserving the firsthand testimonies of participants and witnesses, individuals and societies must continually take responsibility for learning the painful lessons of the past in order to offer hope for the future. Survivor Café offers a clear–eyed sense of the enormity of our twenty–first–century human inheritance—not only among direct descendants of the Holocaust but also in the shape of our collective responsibility to learn from tragedy, and to keep the ever–changing conversations alive between the past and the present.
