The tints of youth; the tumult of battle; the old and worn and tattered banners; the neighing horses; the broken caissons; the prisoners of war; the Mis sissippi flotilla; the defiant rebel yell on the midnight departure from Corinth; Bragg's broken columns on the shifting field of Mission Ridge; the bloody repulse of Kenesaw and Marietta; the discomfiture of Hood before Atlanta; the exultant March to the Sea; the advance in storm and flood through the Caro linas; the bloody hour before Bentonville; the Surrender of Johnson at Raleigh; and the pageant on Pennsylvania Avenue following the funeral car of President Lincoln. Gone are they all; and I too am soon gone! In the fleeting moment the aging veteran, hat in hand, waves a salute to the oncoming youth, bearing full high advanced the colors of his country to undreamed-oi triumphs: for this is our warfare; no battle; no crown of Victory! Book excerpt: While fighting his way toward Atlanta, William T. Sherman encountered his biggest roadblock at Kennesaw Mountain, where Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee held a heavily fortified position. The opposing armies confronted each other from June 19 to July 3, 1864, and Sherman initially tried to outflank the Confederates. His men endured heavy rains, artillery duels, sniping, and a fierce battle at Kolb's Farm before Sherman decided to directly attack Johnston's position on June 27. Kennesaw Mountain tells the story of an important phase of the Atlanta campaign. Historian Earl J. Hess explains how this battle, with its combination of maneuver and combat, severely tried the patience and endurance of the common soldier and why Johnston's strategy might have been the Confederates' best chance to halt the Federal drive toward Atlanta. He gives special attention to the engagement at Kolb's Farm on June 22 and Sherman's assault on June 27. A final section explores the Confederate earthworks preserved within the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our First Year of Army Life: An Anniversary Address, Delivered to the First Regiment of Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery, at Their Camp Near Gaines Mills, June, 1862 If any of our good friends at home would like to sit for awhile with us around our camp fire and listen to the stories of our first year of army life, they are most welcome. Only they must expect the free and easy style of talk that belongs to such a place, and also to hear a great many incidents and allusions of but little interest and sometimes of but little significance to any but ourselves. The record of the First Connecticut Artillery does not afford, especially in the first part of it, anything to gratify the demands of blood-thirsty sensation writers or readers. We have not fought a battle every day, as many of us seemed to think we would when we left home, and as many seem to think our armies ought to do in order to come up to their ideas of active service. Much of our time has been spent in camp or in forts, and affords merely quiet pictures, so to speak, of our domestic life. Still our experience has been singularly varied, and one feature of it, at least, may be instructive, as showing the effect of thorough army discipline upon volunteer troops. Our anniversary came round last June, while we were in camp near Gaines' Mills, before Richmond; and at that time I threw together from rough notes and recollections a sort of anniversary address, which occupied us two long evenings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lifetime Recollections: An Interesting Narrative of Life in the Southern States Before and During the Civil War, With Incidents of the Bombardment of Atlanta by the Union Forces, the Author Being Then a Resident of That City This book is written by my own hand, and sets forth the events of my life, both under moral and spiritual law. It shows the difference between natural and divine history, and God's supremacy over all. This volume does not contain fiction but facts, for it gives the events of my life just as I passed through them, and shows the Truth as I experienced it and learned to know it. Though in writing it I have found so many broken links in the chain of thought, that the endeavor to weld them together has been almost like trying to gather, one by one, the pebbles on the ocean shore, or trying to replace golden moments forever past. I have done my best to make the narration complete. I have written in simplicity, and for the redeeming of our race, and I dedicate my book to the Lord, trusting that the Holy Spirit may carry its message to the hearts of all humanity - both Jews and Gentiles. Book excerpt: The Buffalo Soldiers were African Americans who served in the Regular Army between the Civil War and World War I and fought in some of the most difficult wars against western Indians. Examining their military service, their social lives, and their interactions with western civilian communities, it uses the words of the soldiers themselves and of contemporary observers, some friendly and some not. The book draws on a wide variety of periodicals, military records, and letters. It covers such key topics as the legislative origin of the inclusion of black soldiers in the army, the campaigns in which the Buffalo Soldiers fought, their daily lives and interactions with white communities, the few black chaplains and line officers who were permitted to serve, and the bravery of some Buffalo Soldier heroes. All students of the frontier army as well as aficionados with a special interest in the Buffalo Soldiers will find this an invaluable publication.

Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Soldier's Wife: An Autobiography To tell my own story is to tell that of my famous husband, General John A. Logan. Our marriage was a real partnership for thirty-one happy years. I shared his thoughts and plans no less when he was a senator than when he was a prosecuting attorney in southern Illinois. We were working in the harmony of a common purpose, whether I was in the kitchen improvising a meal for his friends when he was running for the legislature, or entertaining in Washington after his fame was secure and his influence nation-wide. With him I witnessed the stirring events in which he was a leader on the borderland of the Confederacy, where he raised his Union regiment. We were together whenever possible during the war. I travelled with him on his political campaigns after the war. Thus I came to know not only the eminent soldiers and public men of his time, but the men in the ranks who believed in him and followed him, whether to Vicksburg and Atlanta or in his political battles. Our tastes were the same; likewise our ambitions for the best attainments in life. We came of the same pioneering American stock. We were reared among the same surroundings of the Middle West when it was the frontier. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
