Book excerpt: Immerse yourself in the Victorian world of an Egyptian harem as Ellen Chennells reveals the true story of the inner life of the royal house as no one had before and no one has since. Engaged as governess to Egyptian Princess Zeyneb in 1872, Chennells' vibrant curiosity and keen powers of observation made her the perfect correspondent. With wit and eloquence she tells the fascinating story of her five years working for the ruler of Egypt during one of its most interesting modern periods. Chennells spares no details in relating the opulence of the royal palaces, fantastic festivals and weddings, trips to the pyramids, up the Nile, and summers in Constantinople. This first-of-a-kind ebook has over 70 new footnotes and ten additional photos to help put the story in historical and visual context. The introduction and footnotes are written by Brian V. Hunt, writer, frequent visitor to Egypt, and a longtime student of that country's ancient and modern history. Book Synopsis Arab Dress, A Short History by : Norman Stillman
Download or read book Arab Dress, A Short History written by Norman Stillman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-08 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated volume is a historical and ethnographic study of one important aspect of Arab and Islamic material culture - clothing. While in part descriptive, its principal focus is on the evolution and transformations of modes of dress over the past 1400 years throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and for the Middle Ages, Islamic Spain. Arab clothing is treated as part of an Islamic vestimentary system and is discussed within the context of the social, religious, esthetic, and political trends of each age. In addition to the five historical chapters, three chapters are devoted to major themes of Arab costume history - the dress code for non-Muslims, the important socio-economic and political institution of luxury fabrics and garments of honor, and the most well-known and frequently misunderstood institution of veiling.

Book Synopsis Medicine and Morality in Egypt by : Sherry Sayed Gadelrab
Download or read book Medicine and Morality in Egypt written by Sherry Sayed Gadelrab and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Middle Eastern and Islamic societies, the politics of sexual knowledge is a delicate and often controversial subject. Sherry Sayed Gadelrab focuses on nineteenth and early-twentieth century Egypt, claiming that during this period there was a perceptible shift in the medical discourse surrounding conceptualisations of sex differences and the construction of sexuality. Medical authorities began to promote theories that suggested men's innate 'active' sexuality as opposed to women's more 'passive' characteristics, interpreting the differences in female and male bodies to correspond to this hierarchy. Through examining the interconnection of medical, legal, religious and moral discourses on sexual behaviour, Gadelrab highlights the association between sex, sexuality and the creation and recreation of the concept of gender at this crucial moment in the development of Egyptian society. By analysing the debates at the time surrounding science, medicine, morality, modernity and sexuality, she paints a nuanced picture of the Egyptian understanding and manipulation of the concepts of sex and gender.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical and cultural richness of the Near and Middle East is reflected visually in its costume. In this book, Jennifer Scarce makes brilliant use of years or research to provide a lucid acount of the development of women's dress from the fourteenth to the early twentieth centuries. Her study of costume is set in th ebroader context of the social and economic background of the Ottoman Empire, giving the subject a new an fascinating slant. A detailed discussion of cut and construction is accompanied by pattern layouts and numerous photographs which clearly illustrate the different styles of dress through the centuries. Women's costume of the Near and Middle East is a hitherto sadly neglected subject. After years of original research across the world, this gap has been admirably filled by Jennifer Scarce's scholarly readable study.

Book Synopsis The Late Ottoman Empire and Egypt by : Elizabeth H Shlala
Download or read book The Late Ottoman Empire and Egypt written by Elizabeth H Shlala and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law and identification transgressed political boundaries in the nineteenth-century Levant. Over the course of the century, Italo-Levantines- elite and common- exercised a strategy of resilient hybridity whereby an unintentional form of legal imperialism took root in Egypt. This book contributes to a vibrant strand of global legal history that places law and other social structures at the heart of competing imperial projects- British, Ottoman, Egyptian, and Italian among them. Analysis of the Italian consular and mixed court cases, and diplomatic records, in Egypt and Istanbul reveals the complexity of shifting identifications and judicial reform in two parts of the interactive and competitive plural legal regime. The rich court records show that binary relational categories fail to capture the complexity of the daily lives of the residents and courts of the late Ottoman empire. Over time and acting in their own self-interests, these actors exploited the plural legal regime. Case studies in both Egypt and Istanbul explore how identification developed as a legal form of property itself. Whereas the classical literature emphasized external state power politics, this book builds upon new work in the field that shows the interaction of external and internal power struggles throughout the region led to assorted forms of confrontation, collaboration, and negotiation in the region. It will be of interest to students, scholars, and readers of Middle East, Ottoman, and Mediterranean history. It will also appeal to anyone wanting to know more about cultural history in the nineteenth century, and the historical roots of contemporary global debates on law, migration, and identities.

Book Synopsis Modernizing Marriage by : Kenneth M. Cuno
Download or read book Modernizing Marriage written by Kenneth M. Cuno and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1910, when Khedive Abbas II married a second wife surreptitiously, the contrast with his openly polygamous grandfather, Ismail, whose multiple wives and concubines signified his grandeur and masculinity, could not have been greater. That contrast reflected the spread of new ideals of family life that accompanied the development of Egypt’s modern marriage system. Modernizing Marriage explores the evolution of marriage and marital relations, shedding new light on the social and cultural history of Egypt. Family is central to modern Egyptian history and in the ruling court did the “political work.” Indeed, the modern state began as a household government in which members of the ruler’s household served in the military and civil service. Cuno discusses political and sociodemographic changes that affected marriage and family life and the production of a family ideology by modernist intellectuals, who identified the family as a site crucial to social improvement, and for whom the reform and codification of Muslim family law was a principal aim. Throughout Modernizing Marriage, Cuno examines Egyptian family history in a comparative and transnational context, addressing issues of colonial modernity and colonial knowledge, Islamic law and legal reform, social history, and the history of women and gender.
