Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a New York Surgeon The early history of the United States gives ample proof that spiritual aspirations have played an important part in the motives determining modern man's migrations. The narrative which follows may serve as an additional document in confirmation of this statement. So long as mass emigration continues, the process of diffusion and assimilation will remain unfinished; and just so long will it be premature to speak of the American national character being as rounded and complete as that of any among the older ethnic groups of Europe. Fortunately the question of language has been definitely settled for us. The ultimate goal, the evolution of a homogeneous nation, will no doubt be accomplished in the proper way by this most decisive of ethnic factors. It has recently been deplored that numbers of aliens more or less recently admitted to citizenship were still untransformed into authentic Americans of the type dominant in our Eastern States. Such a complaint is unreasonable; for how could one expect that the process of mutual assimilation - a form of osmosis -should advance more quickly on this continent than elsewhere? A mere mechanical mixture, even in the subtle form of an emulsion, cannot possess the stability of an actual chemical union. A homogeneous national character presupposes, as it were, such a union of its racial elements, a process which takes much time. With the nations of the old world, it has spread over centuries. Can we hope to be exempt from this universal rule? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2011-07-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many surgical revolutions distinguish the history and evolution of surgery. Some are small, others more dominant, but each revolution improves the art and science of surgery. Surgical revolutionaries are indispensable in the conception and completion of any surgical revolution, initiating scientific and technological advances that propel surgical practice forward. Surgical revolutionaries can come in the guises of Lister (antisepsis), Halsted (surgical residency and safe surgery), Cushing (safe brain surgery), Wangensteen (gastrointestinal physiological surgery), Blalock (relief of cyanotic heart disease), Lillehei (open heart surgery), and many others. With the hindsight of history, we can recognize patterns of progress, evaluate means of advancing new ideas, and solidify details of innovative behavior that could lead to new surgical revolutions. This volume examines the following vital questions in detail: What is a surgical revolution and how do we recognize one? Are surgical revolutionaries different? Is there a way to educate new surgical revolutionaries? Can history provide enduring examples of surgical revolutions? Are there different kinds of surgical revolutions? What characterizes a surgical revolution in the context of science and technology? What surgical revolutions are on the horizon?

This book was released on 1987-10-29 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this extensively researched history of medical schools, William Rothstein, a leading historian of American medicine, traces the formation of the medical school from its origin as a source of medical lectures to its current status as a center of undergraduate and graduate medical education, biomedical research, and specialized patient care. Using a variety of historical and sociological techniques, Rothstein accurately describes methods of medical education from one generation of doctors to the next, illustrating the changing career paths in medicine. At the same time, this study considers medical schools within the context of the state of medical practice, institutions of medical care, and general higher education. The most complete and thorough general history of medical education in the United States ever written, this work focuses both on the historical development of medical schools and their current status.

Book Synopsis This House of Noble Deeds by : Arthur H. Aufses, Jr.
Download or read book This House of Noble Deeds written by Arthur H. Aufses, Jr. and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 15, 1852, nine men representing various Hebrew charitable organizations came together to establish the Jews' Hospital in New York with a vision of offering free medical care to the indigent Hebrews in the City who were unable to provide for themselves during their illness. This was the beginning of The Mount Sinai Hospital. Now, a century and a half later, This House of Noble Deeds celebrates the scientific and medical achievements of The Mount Sinai Hospital. From its original 45-bed building, the Mount Sinai Medical Center has developed into a state-of-the-art facility comprising a 1200-bed hospital, a major medical school, and a research enterprise with a faculty of almost 3000. Arthur H. Aufses, Jr. and Barbara J. Niss have identified and documented the most important scientific contributions of Mount Sinai over the past 150 years. They present histories of each major department and division, rich with anecdotes, biographical sketches, and photographs. In addition, they share the fascinating story of the hospital's creation and development, a story that ultimately transcends the parameters of the hospital itself and speaks to the broader matter of Jewish and medical history in New York.
