This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 24 maps, plans and illustrations General Sir John Adye (1819-1900) served his country over a long and victorious career in the Royal artillery. A pillar of the Victorian military establishment, his first taste of action came during the Crimean War (1853-1856) and saw as much as any man could care to in the brutal battles of Alma, Balaklava and Inkermann. He and his men were part of the bombardment of Sevastopol, his diaries are a brutal and frank reminder of the terrible conditions of the troops who fought there. Appointed to the staff in India just before the Indian Mutiny (1857-1858) during which he was involved in the retaking of Cawnpore and testifies to the savagery of the fighting of the entire conflict. His criticisms of the British administration that led to the revolt are very interesting and contrast with the more jingoist tone of other memoirs of the period. His final active service was as chief of staff and second in command to the successful expedition to Egypt (1881-1882) under Sir Garnet Wolseley culminating in the battle of Tel-El-Kebir. A fantastic Victorian war memoir, highly recommended.

Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack - 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. “As a young man in Georgia, G. Moxley Sorrel enlisted in a cavalry unit even before the Civil War erupted, so eager was he to serve his home state. During the war, as an aide-de-camp on Brigadier General James Longstreet’s staff he fought in many battles, including those at Chickamauga and Chattanooga. He was at Longstreet’s side when Longstreet was struck down in 1864. Sorrel’s “rough jottings from memory” provide vivid and detailed descriptions of many of the war’s chief participants and events. His military career was cut short when he was shot in the lungs at Hatcher’s Run. Although he survived, the war ended before he could return to duty. In his declining years he wrote, “For my part, when the time comes to cross the river like the others, I shall be found asking at the gates above, ‘Where is the Army of Northern Virginia? For there I make my camp.’”-Paperback Edition

This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of a Common Soldier of Army Life in the Civil War is a riveting war novel by Leander Stillwell, who fought on the Union side. His recollections are published here with all of the original illustrations. Set throughout the entirety of the American Civil War of 1861-1865, this book offers us a vivid step-by-step account of one ordinary man's journey from being a raw recruit just eighteen years old, to a seasoned and practiced veteran. Stillwell's participation in various battles, notably Shiloh and Wilkinson's Peak, as well as several smaller skirmishes, is gripping storytelling which also fulfils a role as a running narrative upon how the war progressed. In contrast to the biographies of officers such as Ulysses S. Grant or William Sherman, Stillwell's account is immersed in the culture of the front-line fighter. He recalls precisely nature of the battle tactics, the behaviors of enemy and friend alike, recounting closely the movements he and his company made and the split second decisions they took. Today, Stillwell's account of his service is among the most valued first-hand sources from the conflict. Written by Stillwell in response to the groundswell of interest in the U.S. Civil War which occurred in the late 19th and early 20th century, this book's publication in 1920 met with a warm response and intense interest, with Stillwell enjoying modest fame in late life.

Lee Robert Edward "Rob" Lee, Jr. (October 27, 1843 - October 19, 1914) was the youngest of three sons of Confederate General Robert Edward Lee, Sr. and Mary Anna Randolph Custis, and the sixth of their seven children. He became a soldier during the American Civil War, and later was a planter, businessman, and author. Rob Lee was born and raised at Arlington House across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. He attended boarding schools during much of the 1850s, while his father, a career U.S. Army officer, was serving in the Mexican-American War and as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Unlike his father and two older brothers, Rob apparently never envisioned a military career, never serving in the United States Army. In 1860, he enrolled at the University of Virginia. After the war, Rob lived and farmed Romancoke Plantation on the north bank of the Pamunkey River in King William County, which he inherited from his maternal grandfather George Washington Parke Custis. Romancoke was located approximately four miles from the Town of West Point. Rob also became a writer, gathering his memories of his family and life in Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee (1904). The first-hand account provides a valuable source of information on day-to-day life at Arlington House during his youth, and includes many items of interest regarding his father's entire life. (see link for online portion of this book below) However, some are now offended by racial views expressed therein. Robert E. Lee, Jr. died in 1914. He was interred with his parents and siblings in the Lee Chapel in Lexington, Virginia, where his father and brother Custis each had served as a president of the college now known as Washington and Lee University.

Reed “Most histories of the Civil War focus on battles and top brass. Hardtack and Coffee is one of the few to give a vivid, detailed picture of what ordinary soldiers endured every day—in camp, on the march, at the edge of a booming, smoking hell. John D. Billings of Massachusetts enlisted in the Army of the Potomac and survived the conditions he recorded. The authenticity of his book is heightened by the many drawings that a comrade, Charles W. Reed, made in the field. This is the story of how the Civil War soldier was recruited, provisioned, and disciplined. Described here are the types of men found in any outfit; their not very uniform uniforms; crowded tents and makeshift shelters; difficulties in keeping clean, warm, and dry; their pleasure in a cup of coffee; food rations, dominated by salt pork and the versatile cracker or hardtack; their brave pastimes in the face of death; punishments for various offenses; treatment in sick bay; firearms and signals and modes of transportation. Comprehensive and anecdotal, Hardtack and Coffee is striking for the pulse of life that runs through it.”-Print ed.

This meticulous selection of the firsthand accounts, memoirs and diaries is specially comprised for Civil War enthusiasts and all people curious about the personal accounts and true life stories of the unknown soldiers, the well known commanders, politicians, nurses and civilians amidst the war. "Personal Recollections of a Cavalryman" is a story of the personal recollections of one of the troopers who rode with Custer, and played a part in the tragedy of the civil war. In writing this book, the author's intention was to contribute toward giving Custer's Michigan cavalrymen the place in the history of their country which they so richly earned on many fields.
