Book excerpt: In July 1862, Burt Green Wilder left Boston to join Dr. Francis Brown, a surgeon working at Judiciary Square Hospital, one of the new army pavilion hospitals in Washington, D.C. Wilder had just finished his degree in comparative anatomy at Harvard, and the chance to assist Brown rather than serve as a soldier in the army was appealing. For the next ten months Wilder worked in the hospital's wards as a medical cadet. Although he lacked formal medical training, he had aptitude, ability, and an advanced knowledge of anatomy. These qualities were increasingly valued in a medical department being reformed by the new surgeon general, William Hammond, who demanded a more scientific approach to medical care and to the creation and dissemination of medical knowledge. Forty-five years after the war ended Wilder began to draft his recollections of an era that had transformed him personally and radically altered American medicine. Richard M. Reid's introduction captures the ways the war dramatically reconfigured the American medical landscape. Prior to the war, the medical community was badly fragmented, and elite physicians felt undervalued by the American public. The war offered them the chance to assert their professional control and to make medicine more scientific and evidence-based. The introduction also includes an extensive historiographical analysis of Civil War medicine and situates Wilder's recollections in the changing direction of the field. Wilder's manuscript, largely finished but never published, is written with humor and grace and provides a revealing eyewitness account of Civil War relief services and hospital work. The army hospitals, dramatically different from the prewar institutions, became centers of medical innovation and analytical record keeping. Even medical cadets such as Wilder conducted postmortems and were encouraged to submit specimens of combat-related injuries to Hammond's newly created Army Medical Museum. His discussions of the day-to-day practice in the hospital, the war's expansion of medical knowledge, the duties of medical cadets, scientific activity, and gender relations are particularly compelling. Recollections of a Civil War Medical Cadet provides an important source to understand wartime medicine, the impact of the conflict on American medicine in the nineteenth century, and the little discussed role of the medical cadet in the army medical system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War was a conflict that destroyed many lives, but for those trying to save lives the tragedy was often compounded. Military doctors labored through the battle where impossible conditions and fear of infection often forced them to resort to amputation. Thomas Fanning Wood recorded his experiences as a Confederate Army surgeon, and his recollections of those events allow us to hear a distinct voice of the Civil War. As a soldier recovering from fever at a Richmond hospital, Wood developed an interest in medicine. After only eight months of study, he was made an assistant surgeon in the Third North Carolina Regiment. His narrative presents a poignant and sometimes horrifying picture of what he went through. Wood spent much of his time at the front; his narrative describes both a doctor's daily activities and the campaigns he witnessed. He was present at many of the war's major engagements: he was near Stonewall Jackson when he fell at Chancellorsville, manned a field dressing station at the foot of Gulp's Hill at Gettysburg, and survived the Union attack on the "mule shoe" at Spotsylvania, when his entire division was wiped out. With its observations of medical care and training not found in standard histories of the war-including a description of the examination required to become an assistant surgeon-Doctor to the Front offers a unique human perspective on the Civil War. With additional descriptions of key figures and events, Wood's recollections combine historical significance and human interest to show us another side of that terrible conflict. Book jacket.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XI DEPOT FIELD HOSPITAL AND STATE AGENCIES AT CITY POINT, VIRGINIA THE hospital was situated half a mile from General Grant's headquarters at City Point, at the junction of the James and Appomatox Rivers, and about eight miles from Petersburg front. The hospital camp, then under the charge of Surgeon Edward Dalton and medical staff, was laid out with great precision. This field hospital was divided into the 9th, 2d, 6th, 5th corps, and corps d'Afric, and these again into divisions, avenues, and streets at right angles, -- numbered and lettered. There were many thousands of sick and wounded in these wards, nine thousand or more at a time, I believe. Convalescent soldiers did police, ward, nurse and kitchen duty. There were hundreds of wards with stockade sides, covered with canvas roofs upheld in the usual manner by ridge and tent poles, each containing probably fifty or more bunks or cots. A perfect system of order and policing by convalescent men was enforced, and not a particle of refuse or any scrap was allowed to lie for a moment upon the immaculate streets or avenues of the "Sacred Soil," which was generally beaten hard and dry, though in wet weather this was a problem to try men's souls and women's soles too. At such times we were obliged to wade through nearly a foot of liquid mud, occasionally sticking fast till pulled out somehow, perhaps with the loss of a high rubber boot. The wards were wonders of cleanliness, considering the disadvantages of field life, and even at that time sanitation was of a high order and, to a great degree, prevented local diseases. Men nurses, soldiers unfit for active duty, took pleasure in fixing up their wards with an attempt at ornamentation, when allowed. These men well deserved their pay, ...

Although the good doctor who wrote them had doubtless seen much blood and gore, it is not his purpose here to conjure back such memories. Instead, he concentrates on the humorous incidents that happened in the Confederate army; his description of slackers and hypochondriacs and how he dealt with them are sure to bring a smile. Civil War humor is often neglected as we look at the great tragedy that it indeed was. That humor could be found in the midst of horror is indeed a tribute to the human spirit, as these memoirs reveal. Nothing from the original has been altered, but in some cases explanations of the more difficult dialect or archaic terms are added by the editor. This book was re-formatted August 18, 2014 and an Appendix was added giving the history of the 18th Mississippi Infantry, of which the author was a member.

Sibert Honor Award, explores the science and grisly history of U.S. Civil War medicine, using actual medical cases and first-person accounts by soldiers, doctors, and nurses. The Civil War took the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans and left countless others with disabling wounds and chronic illnesses. Bullets and artillery shells shattered soldiers' bodies, while microbes and parasites killed twice as many men as did the battles. Yet from this tragic four-year conflict came innovations that enhanced medical care in the United States. With striking detail, this nonfiction book reveals battlefield rescues, surgical techniques, medicines, and patient care, celebrating the men and women of both the North and South who volunteered to save lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guiding us to better communication about illness, treatment, and health through simple art practices Living at the intersection of medicine and art, medical illustration is a field that is not well understood by most--especially by physicians and other healthcare practitioners. In this comprehensive and practical guide to medical illustration, pediatric surgeon François I. Luks provides a useful overview of the field and explains its essential function in facilitating true communication between healthcare providers and their patients. MedSpeak Illuminated: The Art and Practice of Medical Illustration begins with a history of the field, including some of its historical controversies and darker aspects, such as the relative lack of diversity in medical illustrations. Currently, Luks asserts, an increased recognition that medical illustration has long been complicit in promoting a single (white, male) view of health and disease has begun to result in changes to practice and content. He argues that increasing diversity and equity--in illustration and among illustrators--is ultimately good for our health. As he moves forward to describe its place in our current healthcare systems and educational programs, Luks also points to the scientific breakthroughs specifically made by illustrators. In addition, he highlights trends in medical education that emphasize humanism and compassion, thus making the need for better methods of communication even more urgent. MedSpeak Illuminated offers simple advice and techniques that can be followed by even the nonartists among us to use illustration in medical settings as part of our conversations. Like the illuminated manuscripts of old, MedSpeak Illuminated provides visual components for better and deeper understanding, an invaluable resource for students, practitioners, and all those committed to becoming better communicators and more caring professionals.
