Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Impressions In giving these Recollections and Impressions to the public, I feel some sort of explanation is due, - and the explanation is, that they were written at long intervals during the last four or five years, entirely for my grandchildren, and are therefore of a more domestic character than if a larger audience had been anticipated. I have never kept a diary, and am conscious that what I have written is often very desultory, and at all times it is difficult to keep reminiscences from being a dry catalogue of names. Had I even suppressed the personal note, the sketches of well-known people who came into our life might appear too like detached portraits, lacking a frame. Such as they are, I shall feel grateful and pleased if my readers find some little interest in any of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Impressions, 1822-1890 My father was, as I have said elsewhere, a clergyman in Boston, Massachusetts, a Unitarian minister to the First Church, standing in a long line of men, of whom the earliest was severely orthodox, while he abhorred orthodoxy. Yet he was ordained without hesitation, was more than acceptable to the best minds through a service of thirty-five years, and continued more and more unorthodox to the end; so gradually and insensibly did the Puritan tenets disappear one by one until the shadow of them only remained. We are assured that by 1780 nearly all the congregational pulpits were filled by Arminians. In 1815, the year of my father's ordination, they were well domesticated in New England, Calvinism having lost its hold on the minds of thinking people, and none but keen-eyed watchers on the tower seeing what course opinion was taking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections and Impressions of Abraham Lincoln Someone has said, That nation is death-stricken that ceases to reverence the memory of her great men. And so we in America are raising memorials to our Washingtons, our Lincolns, our Grants, our Roosevelts, and are commemorating their birth days. The British are doing the same for their great heroes. There is a good deal in common between our British cousins and ourselves. John Wesley was a Britisher but there are millions in our land to-day who also claim him as theirs. No man could possibly be more of an American than was Abraham Lincoln, but today he belongs to the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories and Impressions: 1831-1900 The present volume has not the character of an Autobiography; nor, indeed, could its author plead any of the usual excuses for publishing a Memoir of himself. It is not the life-history of one who has attained to eminence; it is not the record of an eventful career; it contains few, if any, graphic pictures of remarkable scenes or remarkable men. Since I am not one who has kept a diary, some noteworthy incidents have doubtless escaped my recollection; while, on the other hand, I have been under no temptation to insert extracts on matters of slight importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musical Reminiscences and Impressions I had materials of sufficient interest at my disposal. I had not, however, written many pages, before I began to live again in the past. Incidents which i I had almost forgotten came before me as vividly as if they had occurred but yesterday. I saw, in imagination, the faces and figures of musicians, the lives and doings of whom the younger generations read as matters of musical history. For me, whilst penning my recollections, these musicians of the past were just as present as they were years ago when I was holding converse with them, or when I saw them at the festival or concert in which they were taking part. Some of these celebrities still live in their works, and are thus in a manner present amongst us; but the great singers and the world famed executants I have written about are, for the most part, but a name to those who have not had the privilege, as I had, of hearing them. The voice of many a celebrated singer of bygone days still rings in my ears, although now for ever mute. I. McNeill Whistler Most of what is contained herein has been collected from time to time within the past ten years and jotted down for use in certain lectures on Whistler and his art. The lectures were, as is this book, a tribute to the great painter. The reminiscences are mostly personal. Many of the anecdotes - though perhaps equally familiar to others - were had from the artist's own lips. The views concerning his art, whether right or wrong, were formed while watching him at work day after day, and after many interviews in which, now and then, he would speak plainly concerning art. At the same time not so much as a thought must be attributed to him unless expressly quoted. The biographical data - just sufficient to furnish a connecting thread and aid in the appreciation - have been gathered from casual sources, and are, no doubt, subject to incidental corrections. Only when a duly authorized "life and letters" is published by those who have access to the material that must exist will the great artist be known by the world as he really was - a profoundly earnest, serious, loving, and lovable man. Meanwhile, those who believe in his art must - like the writer -speak their convictions for what they are worth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reprint of "Recollections of Cincinnati" The reproduction of Recollections of Cincinnati, by Gor ham A. Worth, is largely owing to the author's attractive and racy manner of recounting his impressions of the city and its inhabitants, received while a resident there in early days. This, taken in connection with the evidence obtained of the scarcity of existing copies of this small publication, seems to justify a reprint. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of the Civil War This volume does, not claim to be a tactical, or strategic history of the campaigns of which it treats; it aims rather to be a narrative of the every-day life and experience of the private soldier in camp and field - how he lived, how he marched, how he fought and how he suffered. No sooner had some of the volunteers reached the front, and been subjected to the hardships and exposures of army life, than they fell sick, were sent to the hospital and were discharged without passing through any serious campaigns. Others were wounded early, were disabled and were never able to return to their regiments. The more fortunate passed sound and unscathed through battle after battle and campaign after campaign through the whole war. Three years of active campaigning and a year in the hospital was the allotment of the writer, who thus was in the service from the beginning to the end of the war. Whatever the merits or demerits of this work may be, the impressions and the composition are my own. They are an elaboration of notes made during the war and directly after it, following which, it has taken the form of a diary. The pages which follow present one of the very greatest of men as he appeared to a personal friend and fellow worker, the Right Honorable James Bryce, M. P., a writer singularly qualified by temperament, training and Opportunity to set forth the personality of The Grand Old Man. It seems fitting that this happy union of a great subject and a distinguished author should be preserved in convenient and durable form and that to it should be added Mr. Bryce's views on a matter which filled a great place in Gladstone's life as well as in his own. The children were brought up with the strictest vigilance. A friend of my aunt's went one day to the Vice principal Of the Lycee, to ask for leave Of absence for her son, so that he might go with her into the country next day.
