Book excerpt: Prior International Political Economy (IPE) public opinion research has primarily examined how economic and socio-cultural factors shape individuals' views on the flows of goods, people, and capital. What has largely been ignored is whether individuals also care about rewarding or punishing foreign countries for their policies on these subjects. To test this possibility, we administered a series of conjoint and traditional survey experiments in the United States and China that examined how reciprocity influences opposition to foreign acquisitions of domestic companies. We find that reciprocity is an important determinant of public opinion on the regulation of foreign investments. This suggests the need to consider the policies that other countries adopt when trying to explain public attitudes towards global economic integration.

One example is the study by Berg et al. (1995) of the investment game. In this game the person who receives the investment is the one who may reward the investor. This is a direct reward game. Similar to Dufwenberg et al. (2000) it is investigated to what extent trust and reward are still observable when reward is indirect; i.e., when the investor may only be rewarded by a third person who did not receive his investment. Furthermore we investigate the influence of social comparison (information about other players' investments). Our main finding is that mainly indirect reward reduces significantly mutual cooperation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental approach to the structure of the economic evolution, the impact on geopolitics and the role of new social rules. What does a house, digital data and social connections have in common? They all are asset classes of a physical-digital economic space. What does a village marketplace, YouTube and a blockchain have in common? They all are resource allocation mechanisms. What does trust and geography have in common? Both will be fundamentally transformed by the digital revolution. Book II builds on the twin concepts of “reciprocity” and “social contracts” discussed in Book I and introduces a new game analogy to better understand the impact of digitalization on our incumbent systems. For example, who will be the new “players” of this post-modern socio-economic game? How will new reciprocity mechanisms impact geopolitics and social rules? Can a new game generate sustainable systemic behaviors over the medium-term? Book II identifies a profound paradigm shift that will enable the emergence of a fourth family of reciprocity mechanism. This will result in a novel and complementary resource allocation process that should gradually help us address some of our major social and environmental challenges at the start of the third millennium. In this second volume, Derek Queisser de Stockalper helps us understand the rapid evolution of our economic systems and its impact on our modern political and social structures. EXTRAIT Societies have evolved from simple hunter-gatherer community structures tens of millennia ago to gradually more complex structured Societies millennia ago. With a growing number of individuals competing for limited resources, it became imperative for communities sharing common values and culture to organise themselves more formally to address their social and economic agents’ basic physiological needs and craving for physical security. As we have seen in Chapter IV of Book I, various resource allocation processes – based either on gift, balanced or negative reciprocity – developed over the ages to address the resource allocation needs of communities. As a result, or sometimes in parallel, various political structures and Social Contracts emerged to define and organise the living rules of these nascent Societies. Interestingly, the German Sociologist Georg Simmel notes that the simple formalization of a common reciprocal mechanism, such as a common negative reciprocity currency, is enough to justify a shift from ad-hoc or anarchy-like community dynamics to formalized rules-based Society dynamics.10 With time, emerging political and economic rules were formalized within explicit or implicit Social Contracts that eventually led to modern political structures such as the Nation-State. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Derek Queisser de Stockalper is the founder of Queisser & Cie / Qanalytics, a Swiss-based strategic and investment advisory boutique addressing the investment needs of sophisticated capital owners in a low yield environment. Book excerpt: If negotiations on trade in services at the World Trade Organization are to advance liberalization beyond levels undertaken unilaterally and lead to more balanced outcomes, reciprocity must play a greater role in negotiations. This may be facilitated by the use of negotiating rules that establish credible links across sectors and modes of delivery.

Book excerpt: Jason Yackee has proposed two important, attractive, and politically plausible reforms to the international investment law system: (i) a "notice and comment" style procedure to allow states to comment on draft tribunal awards before they are issued, and (ii) a "legislative veto" procedure by which state constituents could annul the legal or precedential value of tribunal decision. This response critiques Yackee's administrative agency analogy and argues that we are more likely to find profitable institutional insights from multijurisdictional common law tort systems. But it endorses his proposals on alternative theoretical grounds and argues that they offer an attractive response to the slow-burn crisis of legitimacy that has dogged the regime for more than a decade.

Empirical evidence indicates, however, that firms do invest in general training of their workers and also points to no underinvestment in specific training. We propose a simple model in which a firm invests the socially optimal amounts in general and specific training if the worker is sufficiently motivated by reciprocity. A reciprocal worker may be willing to give the firm the full return on its investment. We present empirical evidence that is strongly supportive for the proposed mechanism. Workers with a high sensitivity to reciprocity have 15 percent higher training rates than workers with a low sensitivity to reciprocity.

So why cooperate? In The Evolution of Cooperation, political scientist Robert Axelrod seeks to answer this question. In 1980, he organized the famed Computer Prisoners Dilemma Tournament, which sought to find the optimal strategy for survival in a particular game. Over and over, the simplest strategy, a cooperative program called Tit for Tat, shut out the competition. In other words, cooperation, not unfettered competition, turns out to be our best chance for survival. A vital book for leaders and decision makers, The Evolution of Cooperation reveals how cooperative principles help us think better about everything from military strategy, to political elections, to family dynamics.

Book excerpt: The recent era of economic turbulence has generated a growing enthusiasm for an increase in new and original economic insights based around the concepts of reciprocity and social enterprise. This stimulating and thought-provoking Handbook not only encourages and supports this growth, but also emphasises and expands upon new topics and issues within the economics discourse. Original contributions from key international experts acknowledge and illustrate that markets and firms can be civilizing forces when and if they are understood as expressions of cooperation and civil virtues. They provide an illuminating discourse on a wide range of topics including reciprocity, gifts and the civil economy, which are especially relevant in times of crisis for financial capitalism. The Handbook questions the current phase of the market economy that arises from a state of anthropological pessimism. Such anthropological cynicism is one of the foundations of the contemporary economic system that is challenged by the contributors. This highly original and interdisciplinary Handbook will provide a fascinating read for academics, researchers and students across a wide range of fields including economics, public sector economics, public policy and social policy.

What methods in law, science, commerce, philosophy, and logic helped us to get at the truth in cases where certainty was not attainable? In The Science of Conjecture, James Franklin examines how judges, witch inquisitors, and juries evaluated evidence; how scientists weighed reasons for and against scientific theories; and how merchants counted shipwrecks to determine insurance rates. The Science of Conjecture provides a history of rational methods of dealing with uncertainty and explores the coming to consciousness of the human understanding of risk.
