Book excerpt: A growing literature in economics has studied how fairness considerations shape human behavior. This research collection comprises forty key theoretical and empirical contributions spanning the last four decades, along with influential related work in normative economics. These papers show that the fairness motive is essential for understanding human behavior in a wide range of settings, such as markets, bargaining, and redistributive situations. They document large heterogeneity in what people view as fair and the importance people attach to fairness, displaying how a concern for fairness develops in childhood and manifests itself in the brain. Together with an original introduction by the editors, this volume will be a valuable research tool for those interested in the fascinating field of the economics of fairness.

Book excerpt: The Handbook on the Economics of Giving, Reciprocity and Altruism provides a comprehensive set of reviews of literature on the economics of nonmarket voluntary transfers. The foundations of the field are reviewed first, with a sequence of chapters that present the hard core of the theoretical and empirical analyses of giving, reciprocity and altruism in economics, examining their relations with the viewpoints of moral philosophy, psychology, sociobiology, sociology and economic anthropology. Secondly, a comprehensive set of applications are considered of all the aspects of society where nonmarket voluntary transfers are significant: family and intergenerational transfers; charity and charitable institutions; the nonprofit economy; interpersonal relations in the workplace; the Welfare State; and international aid. *Every volume contains contributions from leading researchers *Each Handbook presents an accurate, self-contained survey of a particular topic *The series provides comprehensive and accessible surveys

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reciprocity is the basis of social relations. It permits a peaceful and free society in which people and rights are respected. The essence of families and communities, it also enables the working of markets and organisations, while correcting their main failures. Reciprocity is also a basis of politics, and it justifies social policies. Although the importance of reciprocity has been widely recognised in other social sciences, it has, until recently, been somewhat ignored in economic analysis. Over the past three decades, economic theorist and moral philosopher Serge-Christophe Kolm has been at the forefront of research into the economics of the deepest aspects of societies. In Reciprocity, he provides a unique in-depth analysis of the motives, conducts, and effects of reciprocal relationships. In doing this, he explains crucial functionings of society and its economy, and the ways in which they can be improved. This book should be read by economists, sociologists, philosophers, and anyone concerned with understanding the economy of social relationships and its far-reaching consequences.

Book excerpt: We describe three different treatments of a one-shot trust experiment in which we vary the outcome considered to be fair by inducing different entitlements. Subjects obtain property rights by performing a real effort, non-competitive working task. As expected, we find that the Trustees reciprocate significantly more the more the Trustors are entitled. However, our results unambiguously refute strategic reliance of the Trustors on the reciprocal behavior of the Trustees. Instead, the Trustors tend to aim at unilaterally implementing a fair outcome. Thus our observations provide strong evidence that the fairness norm is much more decisive than trust in the norm of reciprocity.

Book excerpt: An essay on how to include disabled people in general and cognitively impaired people in particular in the Theory of Justice by tempering it with the idea of Obligated Commitment, a capabilities-based approach, that promotes individual flourishing by permitting access to resources in the amount needed to lead a good life. Obligated Commitment recognizes that flourishing, however defined for an individual, is a function of access to resources and that this is what a just society must provide.

Book excerpt: We introduce a parametric model of other-regarding preferences in which my emotional state determines the marginal rate of substitution between my own and others' payoffs, and thus my subsequent choices. In turn, my emotional state responds to relative status and to the kindness or unkindness of others' choices. Structural estimations of this model with six existing data sets demonstrate that other-regarding preferences depend on status, reciprocity, and perceived property rights.

Book excerpt: Trust and Reciprocity explores the contributions of behavioral economics, laboratory experiments, and field experiments to our understanding of the economics of trust, trustworthiness, and reciprocal behavior. The monograph begins with a general summary presenting the evolution of trust and reciprocity, departing from pure self-interest in the understanding of "homo economicus". Next, an exploration of the games and academic contributions that isolate preferences (including social preferences, altruism, inequality aversion, and guilt aversion) from pledges of trust and from reciprocal behavior provides a foundation for behavior that is often misidentified as trust or conditional upon the actions of another. The monograph concludes with a summary of theory and experiments that have identified trust and reciprocity in economics and human behavior.

The main focus of the thesis is the effect of different forms of heterogeneity on cooperation and punishment within groups. We conduct public goods experiments where the first study draws on a sample of nine fishing communities in South Africa; the second is conducted in Cape Town amongst four high schools with distinctly different socio-economic profiles.
