Book excerpt: Dans la plupart des pays industrialisés, mais également dans les pays émergents, la structure des systèmes bancaires a connu de nombreux changements depuis les années quatre-vingts. A cause de ces changements imposés par le "nouvel ordre mondial", comprendre "la performance bancaire" et "ses déterminants" devient un enjeu important, plus particulièrement pour les émergents. Les questions de recherche de cette thèse s'inspirent de ce constat : comment peut-on définir la "performance bancaire et ses déterminants" ?, comment peut-on modéliser les liaisons entre "la performance bancaire" et les facteurs organisationnels (facteurs internes) et environnementaux (facteurs externes) qu'ils soient de nature qualitative ou quantitative ?, quels enseignements le modèle que nous avons construit peut-il fournir en ce qui concerne le secteur bancaire turc ? La 1 ère partie comprend une revue de la littérature portant sur le concept de "la performance bancaire" et sur ses déterminants. Cette étude théorique permet de découvrir les approches, les modèles, les démarches et les constatations des différents chercheurs dans les différents contextes. La 2ème partie est consacrée à la recherche d'un modèle systémique qui soit en mesure d'intégrer l'ensemble des interrelations ou encore des liens pouvant relier la performance bancaire et ses déterminants et à son adaptation au contexte bancaire. La 3ème partie de la thèse se focalise sur l'application du modèle systémique, construit dans la 2ème partie, au secteur bancaire turc. L'application du modèle se réalise à l'aide de deux études empiriques. A partir de ces études, on démontre pour le système bancaire turc qu'il s'agit de multiples déterminants de la performance bancaire de nature interne ainsi qu'externe

Aux aléas climatiques s'ajoute le problème de la fertilité des sols caractérisé le plus souvent par un faible taux de matières organiques : carence en phosphore et en azote, complexe absorbant insuffisant, petite capacité de rétention en eau, etc. Enfin, dans les régions à forte densité de population ( exemples du Ghana et du Togo ), le taux de croissance démographique élevé agit négativement sur le potentiel foncier, caractérisé par la dégradation des ressources naturelles. Les auteurs exposent ici les réalités de ces facteurs déterminants pour la sécurité alimentaire, afin de permettre aux décideurs de mieux les intégrer à leur politique de développement du secteur agricole.

Book excerpt: "This paper investigates the leading causes of nonperforming loans during the economic and banking crises that affected a large number of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 1990s. Empirical analysis shows a dramatic increase in these loans and extremely high credit risk, with significant differences between the CFA and non-CFA countries, and substantially higher financial costs for the latter sub-panel of countries. The results also highlight a strong causality between these loans and economic growth, real exchange rate appreciation, the real interest rate, net interest margins, and interbank loans consistent with the causality and econometric analysis, which reveal the significance of macroeconomic and microeconomic factors. The dramatic increase in these loans is largely driven by macroeconomic volatility and reflects the vulnerability of undiversified African economies, which remain heavily exposed to external shocks. Simulated results show that macroeconomic stability and economic growth are associated with a declining level of nonperforming loans; whereas adverse macroeconomic shocks coupled with higher cost of capital and lower interest margins are associated with a rising scope of nonperforming loans. These results are supported by long-term estimates of nonperforming loans derived from pseudo panel-based prediction models. "--World Bank web site.

SSA banks are found to be generally cost-efficient, but nonperforming loans undermine efficiency, which suggests that improvement in the regulatory and credit environments should improve efficiency. The political and the economic environment have held back financial development in SSA.
