Book excerpt: There is a growing emphasis on full inclusion of remedial and special education students in American classrooms that increases the need for a teaming approach between general educators and special educators or other support services providers. Hourcade (education, Boise State U.) and Bauwens (a private educational consultant) explain their approach to such cooperative efforts, discussing the planning and implementation of cooperative programs, helpful communication technologies, needed interpersonal skills, administrative implications, and assessing the success of cooperative programs. Book excerpt: A free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere: this is the goal of the Khan Academy, a passion project that grew from an ex-engineer and hedge funder's online tutoring sessions with his niece, who was struggling with algebra, into a worldwide phenomenon. Today millions of students, parents, and teachers use the Khan Academy's free videos and software, which have expanded to encompass nearly every conceivable subject; and Academy techniques are being employed with exciting results in a growing number of classrooms around the globe. Like many innovators, Khan rethinks existing assumptions and imagines what education could be if freed from them. And his core idea-liberating teachers from lecturing and state-mandated calendars and opening up class time for truly human interaction-has become his life's passion. Schools seek his advice about connecting to students in a digital age, and people of all ages and backgrounds flock to the site to utilize this fresh approach to learning. In The One World Schoolhouse, Khan presents his radical vision for the future of education, as well as his own remarkable story, for the first time. In these pages, you will discover, among other things: How both students and teachers are being bound by a broken top-down model invented in Prussia two centuries ago Why technology will make classrooms more human and teachers more important How and why we can afford to pay educators the same as other professionals/DIV How we can bring creativity and true human interactivity back to learning/DIV Why we should be very optimistic about the future of learning. Parents and politicians routinely bemoan the state of our education system. Statistics suggest we've fallen behind the rest of the world in literacy, math, and sciences. With a shrewd reading of history, Khan explains how this crisis presented itself, and why a return to "mastery learning," abandoned in the twentieth century and ingeniously revived by tools like the Khan Academy, could offer the best opportunity to level the playing field, and to give all of our children a world-class education now. More than just a solution, The One World Schoolhouse serves as a call for free, universal, global education, and an explanation of how Khan's simple yet revolutionary thinking can help achieve this inspiring goal.

Book excerpt: Competition for scarce resources -- both dollars and soldiers -- has driven the Army to explore ways to reduce the costs and infrastructure needed to conduct military education and training. Resources devoted to military education and training are substantial; in FY00, the Active Component training institutions cost the Army $5.7 billion to run and absorbed 44,500 staff and 74,000 trainee man-years. The Army not only wants to reduce the resources it devotes to the training base, it also seeks to improve the performance of its schools. To achieve these goals, the Army has undertaken various initiatives to restructure and modernize its individual training system, including, for example, establishing the Total Army School System and The Army Distance Learning Program (TADLP). The task is a tough one: improve performance while reducing resources. The range of strategies the Army could pursue complicates the task. Which of them offer the best chance for success? RAND Arroyo Center has examined the Army's recent initiatives along with a number of others, and its analysis suggests that four strategies could help the Army achieve its goal: (1) Integrate Active (AC) and Reserve Component (RC) training institutions, (2) Expand the use of educational technologies in Army schools, (3) Leverage "flexible" distance learning technologies, and (4) Increase the use of the private sector in Army training. Book excerpt: School days, like our everydays, have changed. But the obsolete world of the one-room schoolhouse filled with rough-hewn desks still lingers. The echoes of yesteryear live on in the old-fashioned classrooms that still stand today. Harkening back to a time when the three Rs actually stood for reading, 'riting, and religion, Eric Sloane's sketchbook explores the history and spirit of early American schools. In this vivid slice of Americana, he tells of when paper was a precious commodity, explains the origins of words such as "blackboard" and "moonlighting," and offers evocative illustrations of New England's eighteenth- and nineteenth-century schoolhouses and their delightfully modest interiors. Filled with insight, warmth, and honest nostalgia, "The Little Red Schoolhouse" is an enchanting journey into a bygone past.

Teachers, administrators, teacher educators, and communities seeking advice and motivation for restructuring schools for the 21st century would be well advised to consult this work." --Choice "Provides the practitioner with both a theoretical blueprint with which to build learning communities and a rich supply of benchmark illustrations to use as prototypes. . . . thought-provoking and challenging." --NASSP Bulletin Both in and out of schools, people are experiencing a loss of community. In this book, Thomas J. Sergiovanni explains why a sense of community is so vital to the success of any school and shows teachers, parents, and administrators what they can do to rebuild it. Filled with case studies and other school examples, Building Community in Schools provides the necessary intellectual framework for understanding the need to create communities that are inclusive, meaningful, and democratic.
