Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason, History and Religion There is a popular tendency on the part of some authors to make statements based upon mere as sumption and pure speculation, without any real authority, no matter how these opinions may come in conflict with heretofore accepted chronology or the authentic historic statements of the Bible. Such writers appear to the true student of history, science, truth, and morals entirely indifferent to the consequences resulting therefrom to faith and morals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of Reason: A Series of Discourses on the Leading Topics of Religion My darling boy, kissed but a moment since, And laid away all rosy in the dark Is talking to himself. What does he say? Not much, in truth, that I can understand; But now and then, among the pretty sounds That he is making, falls upon my ear My name. And then the sand-man softly comes Upon him and he sleeps. And what am I, Here in my book, but as a little child Trying to cheer the big and silent dark With foolish words? But listen, O, my God, My Father, and among them thou shalt hear Thy name. And soon I too shall sleep. When I awake I shall be still with thee. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason, the Only Oracle of Man, or a Compendious System of Natural Religion Soon after the close of the revolution, Col. Allen composed the following work; which, on account of the bold and unusual manner, particularly in this country, that the subject of religion is treated, he had great difficulty to get published. It lay a long time in the hands of a printer at Hartford, who had not the moral courage to print it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Christian Doctrine Several years have elapsed since I engaged to prepare this work. The unexpected delay in its publication is owing chiefly to the pressure of other and more imperative engagements. One reason for it, however, is the fact that, although the subject is one which I had long studied and on which I had given instruction to many successive classes, more time was required for the compo sition of the book than I had anticipated. This is partly for the reason that it appeared to me, for the present purpose, expedient to abandon for the most part the method which I had always fol lowed in my Lectures of arranging the matter under the heads of General and Special Doctrinal History. On this topic something more is said in the introductory chapter. This change Of plan has involved an entire recasting of the materials to be incorpo rated into this volume. They represent the results Of investigations undertaken to satisfy my own mind on the many questions raised at the present day as to the truth and the form of the Christian Religion. They are fragments of larger works which I had projected and had hoped to carry out, if the continuous strain Of the practical occupations in which I have been involved had permitted. They have all been useful to myself, and I hope may be of some use to others. For this reason I have thought it better not to allow the developement Of the argument or investigation to be obscured through fear of an occasional overlapping Of one essay with another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion Within the Boundary of Pure Reason The position there Is A god, consequently there is a Summumt Bonum, in the universe, if it as a belief is to rest on pure morals, is a synthetic a priori proposition, which, although adopted singly for a prae tical behoof, extends beyond the notion duty (which notion supposes no matter of choice, only its formal (negative) laws), and consequently cannot be evolved analytically from it: coincidence with the mere Idea of a Moral Lawgiver of Mankind, is no doubt identic with the ethical con ception duty, and to this extent a proposition ordaining such coinci dence were analytic: but to assume his existence, says more than 15 ex pressed by the bare idea of the possibility of such an object. The key to the unfolding of this matter, I can only here sketch in skeleton, with out applying it to the intricacies of the waids. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason, Faith and Authority in Christianity: Being the Paddock Lectures for 1901 02 These lectures on the relations between Reason, Faith, and Authority, were delivered before the students and professors in the chapel of the General Theological Seminary in New York in December, 1901, and February, 1902. They are published under the conditions prescribed in the Paddock Foundation. Portions omitted for want of time when they were delivered, appear in the printed Lectures. A few notes are appended developing some important principles compressed into sentences in the text. I have also introduced in the Lectures, and especially in the notes, extracts from masters of style and luminous thinking, to call the attention of the younger generation of the clergy to books which may be helpful, educative and inspiring. The constant pressure of the pulpit for literary production may lead to the formation of the habit of slipshod methods of expression as well as crudities of thought. For intelligent laymen, as well as for the clergy, time is too short for communion through books with any but the best minds. I believe that the times are ripe for such an essay, and that in this, as in all other domains, secular reason must exercise its rights. I have tried not to wound any conscience; but I have said what I believe to be the truth with the emphasis proper to truth. I do not think that the persecution of the Bacchanals by the Roman Senate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reasons for Returning to the Church of England In laying these reasons before the public, I hope that I am not transgressing the rules of modesty, or thrusting my own private and per sonal affairs before the world. After all, it may be said, there is nothing very surprising in the fact that a person should change his mind on religious subjects, or that having joined the Church of Rome, he should afterwards discover that he had not thoroughly mastered the momentous question between that Church and the rest of Christendom. Why, then, should I trouble the world with statements which would be regarded with indifference by all except my own personal friends and acquaintances?
