Book excerpt: Bringing us close to the complex history of the civil rights movement in the American South—the currents that involved thousands of communities and millions of individual lives—this book looks deeply into the experiences of a single Alabama town, Tuskegee, and its surrounding Macon County. It is based on interviews with the people—white and black, liberal and traditional—whose lives were caught up in the movement and altered forever. We see Tuskegee in the early 1940s, seat of America’s most venerable institute of high education for blacks, an important symbol of black progress—yet almost entirely controlled by a white power structure—and we see the emergence of a charismatic leader, Charles G. Gomillion, who defied Tuskegee Institutes’ apolitical traditions and inspired blacks to organize for their right to vote. Thus begins decades of struggle, which Robert J. Norrell re-creates for us through the testimony of the people who lived and shaped this history: the dramatic appearance before a U.S. congressional committee of local civil rights leaders and ordinary farmers bearing witness to the seemingly endless obstructions to block voter registration; the months-long boycott of white Tuskegee merchants that was sparked by the city council’s attempt to exclude black voters by gerrymandering; the fiercely controversial move to integrate the public schools that culminated in Governor George Wallace’s order to state troopers to prevent the opening of Tuskegee High; the anguish that accompanied efforts by blacks to penetrate all-white church congregations. Norrell describes how blacks enters—and won—local elections, including those for mayor and sheriff, and how, with the onset of heightened activism in the late 1960s, Gomillion and other established leaders of the civil rights movement heard angry youthful voices raised against their cautious approach. Reaping the Whirlwind carries us through the early 1970s to a community profoundly changed, proud to have shed its false air of harmony, gradually coming to terms with the disorder and dissension of the preceding years. It is a moving and significant chronicle that documents a critical era in the nation’s history.

Book excerpt: Like all of the minor and major prophets in the Old Testament, the primary focus for the book of Hosea is the end time. The message delivered anciently was only a type of what is occurring today. It contains a tremendous warning that must be delivered now! Hosea was written first of all to God’s adulterous wife in this end time. That is how the book is introduced in the very first chapter. That has not been understood before-not until now! God deals with His Church first because that is the most important issue-by far. God’s next major concern, in this book, is the British peoples. After that, God is concerned about the nation of Judah, called “Israel” today. Hosea tells us that those who sow the wind are going to reap the whirlwind! But there is a beautiful ending to his message. In this booklet: • God's Secret About Hosea's Children • Britain in Prophecy • God's Love for Israel This ebook is offered completely free of charge by the Philadelphia Church of God. Book excerpt: "Little children, it is the last hour..." So wrote the beloved apostle John. Two thousand years later we are living in the final moments of history. God's people are beginning to lift up their heads, knowing their redemption draws near. Where are we in the prophetic timetable? What momentous event of Bible prophecy will we witness next? Will America be judged before the rapture of the church? Reaping the Whirlwind begins with a primer on the nature of judgment and wrath. Through Jesus' eyes we see God as neither a harmless Teddy bear nor a vengeful tyrant, but as Agape, the Consuming Fire. We can then fearlessly examine the ancient prophesies about America. We can lay aside the popular fables that have lulled us to sleep. By casting aside false comfort, we are free to receive God's comfort, which stirs us up to love and good works. Reaping the Whirlwind reveals the heart of God for His people living in the midst of Babylon America. It is written for the mature Christian, the new believer and the seeking unbeliever. Let those who have ears to hear, hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. A.P. Watchman A.P. Watchman has been walking with the Lord for thirty years, loving His church, and ministering in the capacity of prophet, teacher and evangelist. He currently resides in Sacramento, California.

Book excerpt: A woman’s true account of eighteen years as a Soviet prisoner: “Not even Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich matches it.”—The New York Times Book Review In the late 1930s, Eugenia Ginzburg was a wife and mother, a schoolteacher and writer, and a longtime loyal Communist Party member. But like millions of others during Stalin’s reign of terror, she was arrested—on trumped-up charges of being a Trotskyist terrorist counter-revolutionary—and sentenced to prison. With sharp detail and an indefatigable spirit, Ginzburg recounts her arrest and the eighteen harrowing years she endured in Soviet prisons and labor camps, including two in solitary confinement. Her memoir is “a compelling personal narrative of survival” (The New York Times Book Review)—and one of the most important documents of Stalin’s brutal regime. “Deeply significant…intensely personal and passionately felt.”—Time “Probably the best account that has ever been published of…the prison and camp empire of the Stalin era.”—Book World Translated by Paul Stevenson and Max Hayward

Book excerpt: Building on years of research and teaching, experienced author and theologian David Wells offers a remedy for evangelicalism’s superficial theology and weightless conception of God: a journey to discover the paradoxical nature of his holiness and love. We all struggle, at times, to hold that paradox together, commonly resulting in problems such as liberalism or legalism. Yet understanding how God’s holiness is inextricably bound to his love is what enables us to live between the two extremes and defines our life of service in this world. In the vein of classics such as Packer’s Knowing God, Wells’s biblical theology is written at an accessible level so that all readers can cultivate a balanced vision of the God who belongs in the center of it all.

Book excerpt: "My purpose in writing this book was twofold: first, to supply a long-standing deficiency in Kansas historical literature (which has concentrated almost exclusively on the pre-Civil War period) by describing the political, military, social and economic events and developments of the state's first four years -- an era even more dramatic, and hardly less significant, than the one which preceded it; and, secondly, to contribute to a better understanding of the Civil War in the Trans-Mississippi West through a realistic presentation and analysis of the Kansas-Missouri border conflict, the operations of the Missouri guerrillas under Quantrill, and the Union and Confederate military campaigns in Missouri, Arkansas, the Indian Territory, and Kansas itself. My primary focus throughout the book is on Kansas, and if I have emphasized political and military matters, it is only because this period of Kansas history was essentially political and military in character"--Preface of original edition.

Book excerpt: The Whirlwind is a telling but poignant social commentary on the sordid state of the Nigerian society. It is a window into the decadent underbelly of the higher institutions of learning where many youths are irredeemably and intractably enmeshed in social vices such as rape, suicide, drugs, sexual abuse, cultism and gangsterism. The play, which is structured into twenty-four movements, is progressively knitted together chronologically and suffused with suspense, pity and terror as its dominant literary devices. Biola, the protagonist in the play, is a product of parental negligence that never enjoys the love and the care of parents. Besides, Biola is introduced to sex very early in life by Aunty Sowa, the family's housemaid who plays the role of his mother. To find relevance, he joins Geoffrey's gang in the University that is notorious for rape, sex, alcoholism and intimidation of students. From there, his life spirals out of control as he becomes trapped in a whirlwind that almost ruins his life beyond redemption. This is a play that gives hope to the hopeless, strength to the weak, faith to the faithless, joy to the despondent and light to those who sit in the shadow of death. Solomon Edebor draws our attention, very clearly, to the law of sowing and reaping and also to the place of repentance, reconciliation, forgiveness, salvation and transformation. The playwright reassures us that the dry bones can live again and that there is hope for a tree if it is cut down. This is a must-read for everyone who has lost touch with reality and is contemplating giving up. In this modern play, our attention is also drawn to the intercourse between literature and medicine and its restorative and therapeutic benefits which make it a compelling drama of the twenty-first century. This is a narrative drama that thrives tremendously on the copious deployment of analepsis as one of its major theatrical aesthetics. Its non-linear plot is classical; its theme is Promethean; its message is Brechtian.
