Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the research was to use real time X-ray scattering: (1) to assist in development of a model for the shrinkage of thermoplastic polymers during processing, and (2) to study the kinetics of crystal structure development. The principle tasks involved real-time X-ray scattering experiments. The secondary tasks involved characterization studies of the materials. We are using real time X ray scattering to study the shrinkage of crystallizable thermoplastic polymers during heat treatment. Most processing models in use today do not use data collected in situ. The matrix shrinkage is determined in real time, directly from x ray scattering. The evolution of cell structure that develops during crystallization can be detected by small angle and wide angle real time x ray scattering.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the course of this research program we have contributed significantly to the understanding of structure/processing relationships in thermoplastic polymers crystallized from the melt. We concentrated efforts in metallocene- synthesized polyolefins, viz., polypropylene and polyethylene. Real-time wide and small angle X-ray scattering were performed to study the development of different crystallographic phases in PP and PE. Multiple crystallographic forms crystallize in PP, including the orthorhombic gamma and monoclinic alpha phases. Kinetics of crystallization were measured for each phase. We demonstrated that gamma crystallizes at higher temperature than alpha, but melts at lower temperature. Gamma does not convert into alpha upon heating. We showed that nucleation and growth is the mechanism of crystal formation (not spinodal decomposition, as suggested by others) Stress was incorporated into a study of effects of zone-drawing on the structure of PE. Structure was studied using molecular retraction, X-ray scattering and thermal analysis as functions of drawing stress and temperature.

Book Synopsis Polyurethane Elastomers by : Cristina Prisacariu
Download or read book Polyurethane Elastomers written by Cristina Prisacariu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of the physical / mechanical behaviour of polyurethanes (PU ́s) elastomers, films and blends of variable crystallinity. Aspects covered include the elasticity and inelasticity of amorphous to crystalline PUs, in relation to their sensitivity to chemical and physical structure. A study is made of how aspects of the constitutive responses of PUs vary with composition: the polyaddition procedure, the hard segment, soft segment and chain extender (diols and diamines) are varied systematically in a large number of systems of model and novel crosslinked andthermoplastic PUs. Results will be related to: microstructural changes, on the basis of evidence from x-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS), and also dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and IR dichroism. Inelastic effects will be investigated also by including quantitative correlations between the magnitude of the Mullins effect and the fractional energy dissipation by hysteresis under cyclic straining, giving common relations approached by all the materials studied. A major structural feature explored is the relationship between the nature of the hard segment (crystallising or not) and that of the soft segments. Crystallinity has been sometimes observed in the commercial PUs hard phase but this is usually limited to only a few percent for most hard segment structures when solidified from the melt. One particular diisocyanate, 4,4’-dibenzyl diisocyanate (DBDI) that, in the presence of suitable chain extenders ( diols or diamines), gives rise to significant degrees of crystallinity [i-iii] and this is included in the present work. Understanding the reaction pathways involved, in resolving the subtle morphological evolution at the nanometre level, and capturing mathematically the complex, large-deformation nonlinear viscoelastic mechanical behaviour are assumed to bring new important insights in the world basic research in polyurethanes and towards applied industrial research in this area.

This book was released on 1995-07-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in materials science and engineering have paved the way for the development of new and more capable sensors. Drawing upon case studies from manufacturing and structural monitoring and involving chemical and long wave-length infrared sensors, this book suggests an approach that frames the relevant technical issues in such a way as to expedite the consideration of new and novel sensor materials. It enables a multidisciplinary approach for identifying opportunities and making realistic assessments of technical risk and could be used to guide relevant research and development in sensor technologies.
